Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 827

And just out of boredom and curiosity, I decided to check out the respective game boards of these characters just to see if they were saying anything about the match. Not much of anything on the KOTOR board, but I did find one particularly interesting topic on the FFVI board. It's interesting to read about this stuff from their point of view:

What a wonderful thing to wake up to. This is the first contest I've been on the leaderboard and hopefully I'll get a nice boost after this match.

I was thinking the other day that we should try to get Setzer in one of these contests since he's the only FFVI character to appear in a KH game. That or a Final Fantasy generic character like either Bahamut, Shiva or Moogle. What do you guys think?

Match LVI: (2) Squall Leonhart vs. (15) Akuma

Information

Name: Squall Leonhart
Game/Series: Final Fantasy VIII
Previous Contest: 2008
Performance: 3rd in round 3

Name: Akuma
Game/Series: Street Fighter
Previous Contest: 2007
Performance: 3rd in round 1

Analysis

Now this is an interesting rematch. In 2007 Akuma was drawn against Squall and even though Squall also had Aerith in the poll Akuma came nowhere close to defeating him. So removing the dead weight from Squall Akuma is in line for a beating. Squall has an epic match against Auron in round 3 and while he is the favourite looking bad here won’t be the way to go.

In 2007 Akuma was only able to get 39.5% against Squall with Aerith in the poll. I guess this would be a great way to see how much LFF can affect two characters. Interestingly enough Geno was also in the poll that went up against Squall in 2005. If you hold Geno’s performance constant between the two years Squall is expected to double Akuma. Of course some people believe that Geno has Square fans for whatever reason so that may be a bit off.

Squall shouldn’t have a problem crushing Akuma though whether or not he gets the doubling is still up for debate. Auron performed almost as good as he did against Aerith a few matches ago so the match is still very debatable and while he remains a favourite letting Akuma look good on him isn’t quite the best way to start off this contest.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Squall Leonhart > Akuma

charmander6000’s Prediction: Squall wins, 66.46% - 33.54%

With that said what's everyone's opinion on the NRT winners, should they stay or should they go?

Charizard
Ken
Cid Highwind
Darth Revan
Yoshimitsu

Charizard should stay, I'd like to wait until next round for Ken/Revan, Cid could go either way, but if we bring in another FFVII he should go and lol Yoshimitsu, too bad we'll never see him tank.

I was behind Terra from the beginning, and when I brought up my upset pick prior to bracket closing, the response was "lolz bt, he has DARTH in his name, how can he lose despite every other blank-slate WRPG character sucking!?" or "moron, how could HK-47, the hilariously awesome robot be better than the bland and lifeless Revan! Revan and Yoshimitsu don't deserve to be anywhere near a bracket.

Cid should go in favour of Barret or Laguna

Ken should stay and Charizard should go for Blastoise to have a shot.

Yoshimitsu, yes, but wait until everything's over before calling Revan weak like that. And Cid's got strength, keep him in and see if Barret and Laguna can sneak in next year instead of dropping him like a hot potato.

Blastoise for Charizard, though? 'lol'

I hope so, I'm hoping to get back on!

Terra's never had real good bracket support like Kefka - only 56% against Kerrigan and Zelda had 92% out of her fourpack. Dante had 88%, too. I think Revan will be the bracket favorite but I'm not sure.

You're probably right, and oddly enough, it's probably for the same reason that Revan never had a chance. He has "Darth" right there in his name, which makes it instantaneously recognizable as Star Wars--hence, a lot of casual brackets would pick it. However, being associated with a franchise that originated outside of the gaming world put him at a huge disadvantage, because most licensed games are utter crap.

To be fair, as far as licensed games sucking, Star Wars is the exception to the rule. Yeah, there's a lot of stinkers like the movie games, but there's also a lot of great games like KotOR, Jedi Knight, TIE Fighter, Battlefront, and so on.

I was a little iffy on Revan after Kefka's performance, though I still thought he was the favorite here, so I'm a bit surprised. It's not like Revan's choking as bad as Arthas, and we have no clue if and how much Terra may have boosted. Still, I wouldn't pick Revan over HK-47 at this point, and even if his strength turns out to be a mystery because of weirdness in a Squall/Terra match, it's probably not impressive enough to bring him back.

Frankly, Charizard's the only rally character worth bringing back, though I guess we might as well keep Ken around anyway. I'll probably nominate Revan for the next contest, but I wouldn't be upset to see him miss it.

So... Assuming Revan = HK-47, how does Terra look?

So... Assuming Revan = HK-47, how does Terra look?

Going by L-Block/HK, Terra looks like she'd hit a bit shy 40% on the block if that were the case. Going by L-Block last year, that's more than Ammy (37%) and less than Alucard (41.7%). Of course, extrapolating through L-Block of all characters is probably fraught with peril.

42% on 2007 Link, which is above the high Noble Nine (Mario/Samus/Snake) range. That would put Terra at 47% on 2007 final Cloud and she'd just miss doubling 2007 final Snake.

Mewtwo, Pokemon RBY, Charizard...sure, Pokemon keeps winning, but they've been pretty impressive compared to the average NRT-winner. I don't think that streak will continue (about still finding strong contenders like them, not about winning the NRT), but until it's proven wrong it's kinda hard to argue against another character from it. New characters have to come from somewhere.

Terra with 44.56%.
