If
we're looking for fodder, Dr. Light and every FF1 class would be
reasonable choices. I'm not sure why there hasn't been a push to put
Fighter into the tourney (he strikes me as the strongest FF1 class;
Black Mage may be stronger, but is redundant with Vivi already around.) MM Robot Masters are likely too weak. Gutsman might get enough of a boost from MMBN to be merely fodder instead of awful, but Lan would be a better test of Battle Network's lack of strength. Other than that you'd be guessing at what MM2 or 3 masters would be decent. |

I
agree that Guybrush is an essential part of the contest, but he ended
up massively overseeded this year. Seriously, a 9-seed? I know the
seeds were based on nominations, but common sense says that he's not a
nine-seed. What he is is a jobber. His job is to show up every year and lose in the first round. Same as CATS, Crash Bandicoot (except for in CB1, where he was overseeded and received true fodder for round 1), Tails, and just about anyone from a Tales game. Does this mean that they don't belong? No, they belong. The ones that get blown out and never appear again, they're the true fodder. These guys, they're at a level where they belong in the contest, but always against a superior opponent. --- CB8 score: 45 Incorrect picks: Ocelot, Wesker, Fawful, Tidus (2 rounds), Phoenix (2 rounds), Simon, Kratos Aurion |

I'm with new fodder>old fodder. But the best scenario is new characters who might actually be decent. Characters like Darunia, Nabooru, Rufus Shinra, Red XIII, etc. can provide vastly more fun matchups that utter garbage useless crap character #137. Match LV: (7) Darth Revan vs. (10) Terra Branford Information Name: Darth Revan Game/Series: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Previous Contest: N/A Performance: N/A Name: Terra Branford Game/Series: Final Fantasy VI Previous Contest: 2006 Performance: Lost to Zelda in round 2 Analysis Ever since Kefka’s performance I have been quite nervous about this match. While some people remain confident I see two characters that vary in strength where we could have an easy win to another upset. A lot of people that do remain confident have played KotOR, but at the same time they could be bias, especially since Revan was a Nomination Rally Tournament winner. While some people think that the name Darth and a light sabre will give Darth a boost because of Star Wars fans, but personally I don’t think that will be the case. First of all he’s from a game that appeals to Star Wars fans and second unless people recognize the guy they probably won’t vote for him. Just look how badly Kyle Katarn performed in the GameSpot contest, the guy was bad fodder despite holding a light sabre. If Revan wins it will be because of his own strength, not because of his item. Revan’s strength has been the biggest debate of this contest. KotOR fans declare that Revan would be much stronger than HK-47 I however find it hard to believe. If Revan was that well liked it he would have made it to the contest as early as 2004 and have not require a rally to reach the contest. It is pretty rare to get a character that is by far the strongest after an initial character has already reached the contest, especially when that character didn’t receive a joke rally. I just find it weird that people forget to nominate Revan year after year while nominating HK-47, but when he reaches the bracket they realize how much they love him. Revan isn’t some popular side character from an ensemble game that people may have forgotten to nominate. After the performances of Cecil and Kefka it seems old Final Fantasy may have gotten a boost from Dissidia. The last we saw Terra was back in 2006 where she was crushed by Zelda despite doing as expected against Kerrigan. Back then she was high fodder, but she could have dropped since then. On the other hand Dissidia could provide her a boost which is what I fear right now. Sure Cecil may have been SFF by Zack in the previous contest, but Kefka had no reason to crush Arthas that badly. I know a lot of people want to blame Arthas for that, but I would be shocked if he was the only one to blame. With a combination of overrating Revan and underrating Terra I’ve seen some people predict quite the crushing. I think Revan will struggle to get his win and should Terra get the upset I will not be the least bit surprised. Either way this is only a one point match as the loser loses to Squall in the next round. charmander6000’s Bracket: Darth Revan > Terra Branford charmander6000’s Prediction: Revan wins, 54.73% - 45.27% --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB8%20BOP.xls Character Battle VIII - 43/52 - Today's Winners: Auron and Zero |

The
idea of Revan being weaker than HK-47 continues to stupefy me. I'll
have to believe it when I see it; I'm expecting a blowout on his end
tonight. This 'NRT bias' is kinda silly, too. I didn't even know Revan was in the NRT! And he probably didn't need it to get in anyway. --- turnturnturn your brain in http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs14/f/2007/020/b/f/Ariel_by_lolita_art.jpg |
KamikazePotato | Posted 2/11/2010 5:13:58 PM | message detail |
The
only thing Revan needed to get in was for his name to be put in the
database, as issues with his name (you know them, if you don't, play
KOTOR) probably prevented him from getting in. Same with Red. Ken got a
lot more NRT support and still ended up a 13 seed. --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |

Nice
show here from Zero, by the way; most impressive performance he's had
since 2004 (Crono R2 in 2007 was a total fluke caused by the picture,
look at the difference in Raiden improving on Crono and how worse HK-47
did on Zero that round). This is only a few points shy of what Auron
did to Fenix, albeit another year removed from his best days and with
Rydia in the poll. He just needs to keep that up and not get humiliated by Auron next round. --- turnturnturn your brain in http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs14/f/2007/020/b/f/Ariel_by_lolita_art.jpg |

Late post, but about the fodder debate... Guybrush is essential for the contests? He's not a board legend and he doesn't have a funny board vote. Heck, he has no board history whatsoever. He's just weak as hell and can never win a non-horrible match (Laharl/Neku). It's almost like saying Jade Curtiss is essential for the contests, the only difference being Guybrush got his butt kicked a couple of times in 1v1 as well. As for the argument of old fodder vs. new fodder, how about no fodder? Yes, there's always the possibility new entrants tank, but why rally behind oldies we know are weak (unless there's a good reason, like a new game)? I know these old weak characters have fans, but forcing them into the contests and into more predictable buttkickings doesn't make things funner for the majority of us, and it won't compel any (or hardly any) of us to try their games. Just let them be. Hell, they probably have enough fans outside the board to make the contest anyway; we ALWAYS get more fodder than we wanted. The board should stick to nominating characters who would make for great matches. And CATS, but he's the lone exception. --- Yoblazer: http://i38.tinypic.com/2s024p4.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |

With
128 characters, fodder is inevitable. With 64 characters, I'd like a
very small number (like 4) fodder characters to give some of our Noble
Niners big blowouts in round 1 and provide variety. Guybrush isn't essential but he's much better than most of our fodder characters and I'm fine with having him in 128 character contests. With 64 character contests, we should have different fodder every year. --- 6 years later, Crono's quest to defeat Sephiroth -- Round 1: Missingno 'Till shade is gone, 'till water is gone, into the shadow with teeth bared.... |
