I still hold fast to the belief that Dante was actually stronger than Yoshi in 2006 - and say this as someone who had Yoshi > Dante to boot. The disparity in performances leading up to the match aside (the 55% on Riku in retrospect was horrible), I've never seen Dante look so horrible in a non-sprite match. When most of your popularity comes from your amazing design (certainly isn't DMC!), a pic disadvantage is lethal.

Uhhh...Cid Highwind, but I doubt KH was the reason.

I didn't even realize Cid was in the KH-series...huh.


Anyway, Ryu's getting Hadoken'd next round from what we've seen so far. Axel will still go up a good bit from here if everything else we've ever seen from KH is a good indication, but Axel should beat Balthier somewhat-comfortably and it's not like Ken looked great either (RE5-boost or not).

The year Dante lost to Yoshi was that ridiculous Nintendo upswing year. I'd take Dante to crush Yoshi now.

Frog should beat Axel handily now, but Dante should beat Bowser without too much trouble too.

I wouldn't get out of hand with predicting Dante over Yoshi - a picture can only do so much, and Squall 'only' got 58% on the dino last year. 52-53% sounds about right post-DMC4.

I will argue to hell and back against anyone who actually thinks Dante looked bad in his Yoshi pic. Dante didn't look bad; the contrast was just immense and Yoshi looked good. Think Kratos/Tails but with a much, much stronger cutesy character.

Dante > Mega Man joking aside, It seems that after these last two matches, legitimate cases can be made for several characters being stronger than noble niners.

I think it's high time for a rank the characters. Here's a template:

Seriously, just because people want to lowball DAnte and forget how strong he realyl is doesn't mean that this is a great match for him. Same thing with Ryu; people decided to lowball him then were amzed by how he did, when it was obviously he'd get high 60s.

Yep, I still remember the 80% on Ratchet. Either way, Dante is the clear favorite against Ryu now. No one would have taken Balthier over Axel, and Dante is looking golden to exceed Ryu's percentage.

Unpopular question: If Dante loses next round, do we have enough to brand him a 1v1 choker? Keep in mind the losses to Ryu/Yoshi/Vincent, an embarrassing loss to Sonic (although the picture helps explain that one), and the fact that his strongest 1v1 victim is still Tails.

Still not worried about Ryu losing until I see it. Dante is a character I won't have faith in until I actually see him win a big 1v1 match. He has always overperformed in the first round. Every single year. He's also going to bleed percentage like mad come the ASV.

Just because a character doesn't have a notable win doesn't make them a choker.

Crono/Dante - was a 50/50 match, but what did we know back then?
Ryu/Dante - Ryu was the favourite until Dante destroyed Ryo which then made it a hype match
Sonic/Dante - based on Sonic/Ryu and the previous year Dante wasn't that far off, plus there is the picture
Vincent/Dante - A lot of people on the board thought Vincent would break 60% on easily.
Yoshi/Dante - Only match where Dante had everything going for him and lost.

Sure, Axel was pretty lame in 358/2, but him dropping from it would still be weird. I'm guessing this is just Dante being one of the perfect characters to blow him out - both of them seem to be popular because of their 'coolness'.

Yeah, I remember quite well having Dante > Ryu in my bracket and then going to the board and only to see most people disagreeing. Well, Dante was coming off a pretty uninspiring year in 2002 so I guess that would be the natural pick X_X

And he'll probably still end up with a better percentage than Ryu got on Balthier or close to it. Dante's ASV isn't super bad. Not great, but it's not MGS or old school FF bad.

One time is all it takes. Of course, Dante had that "Never gets past the 2nd round stigma" hanging over his head forever (and he only did it once 1-on-1 when he had the red carpet to round 3 rolled out for him). I still say he's the favorite against Ryu, but Dante's got to prove he can win against an established character.

And Dante/Yoshi is one of the weirdest results ever, and the fact that Hayabusa killed Riku the very next year only cemented how weird it was. I fully blame LUEshi.

Dante doesn't blow matches in which he's a huge favorite, but there has been more than one case where he suddenly looks like a Noble Nine crusher but can't back it up against fellow near-elite guys.

2003 - Dismantles Ryo Hazuki way worse than Lara Croft did (Dante and Lara weren't that far apart in 2002), can't back it up against Ryu
2004 - 80% against Ratchet makes him look godly, follows it up with a disappointing performance against Tails (I won't even count the Sonic loss, but he sucked against Tails)
2005 - His best year yet. Can't play this one down.
2006 - Looks godly once again against Hayabusa, chokes to a Yoshi who looked a lot weaker

None of this changes the fact that Dante is clearly the big favorite now, but he does have a bit of a dubious 1v1 history. If he manages to lose in a couple of weeks, I think the 1v1 Choker title will be merited.

There's a serious difference between dismantling Ryo Hazuki or Ratchet and dismantling Axel. Frog needed a last hour rally to beat Axel. Axel broke 30% on Mega Man. Axel got 3rd in his vote-in poll, beating guys like Lightning, Scorpion, Raiden. Axel just had a game that he played a huge role in, which won the DS GotY poll.

Axel isn't fodder, but Dante is making him look like he is.

Which is what concerns me. He made Hayabusa look like fodder, too. Outperforming Mega Man (Well, he might end up below Mega Man by the time he's done, but not far) should always be cause for alarm for someone like Dante.
