I hope Gamefaqs doesn't consider him an underdog against Sephiroth. Sephiroth has never beaten Snake except in a battle royale poll, and Snake won the important match between them there. Snake's been to the finals of both of the past 2 contests and took 2nd place once, while Sephiroth hasn't been to the finals of a real contest since 2005. Snake beat Cloud twice, Sephiroth has never beaten Cloud. Without x-stats, why would you think Sephiroth is the favorite?

Are we seriously trying to extrapolate this performance to how he'll do against Sephiroth or Cloud?

It's a Mega Man character who is the underdog and lower seed in a match you don't have to bother bracket voting in, in addition to it being his first match in years. That's a perfect storm of an early vote.

Man, I wish Karma's point about Marth sharing that Japan-o-centric (or whatever the hell it is) appeal with Sephiroth didn't resonate with me, because I don't want to believe it but it goddamn sounds true. Marth can still do really well for himself, but I'm guessing someone like Meta-Knight would have made for a hilarious result.

More specifically, he's getting wrecked in the UK, where Snake has 87%. Protoman's actually got like 40% in Germany and the Netherlands.

Well I'd have given serious consideration to taking MM in that match even before today. Snake only got 57% on Yoshi in the sprite round in 2006, which is probably pretty close to what Megaman was worth on him indirectly that year. If Snake has regressed some from 2008, it's quite possible.

And I really wouldn't take this match as indicative of anything, and I've got Snake 7% higher than what he'll likely finish at (...and considered it *very* optimistic, why did you people go so high <_<). He's doing nothing here to make himself look like a favorite or anything against Sephiroth, but we call it backing 'upsets' for a reason!

I meant Megaman was probably worth about 57% on Yoshi indirectly. He got 68% on Yoshi directly (in the sprite round, incidentally) in 2005.

I wouldn't call him a favorite based on this match if he finished above 80%. If anything, I'd call him a favorite because people are going to anti-vote Cloud and Seph even more once we're late in the contest and the brackets are all dead.

Although I still wouldn't even call him a favorite!

This isn't too surprising, considering we had literally no data on Protoman going into the contest. He was for stats purposes a new character, and it looks like he's proven that he can be a somewhat decent contest staple.

If Snake ends in the low 70s, it won't mean much. Ending in the mid-60s would have been alarming, because you have to figure Protoman can only be so close to Megaman.

Inferring anything from these obvious favorites matches kinda seems like a bad idea. While it is tough to picture Snake getting anti-voted, we still had Link, one of the most universally loved characters on this site, pull what I consider to be a clear underperformance on Thrall. It almost seems like getting matched up with Solid Clinkeroth is a godsend for the weaklings this year.

I wonder how Mario would have done against a weak but non-SFFable guy like Wander.
