I don't see why Snake would drop at all to be honest and if he does how drastic could it be?

For Protoman to avoid a doubling he'd have to be close to Zero which I fail to see. He has less appeal than him and as far as I'm concerned he's not playable, either. Add in the fact that MMX > MM most likely as a series and I see a very low mid-carder.

Snake is probably going to be weaker this year than he was in 2008, but that makes sense. Last year, he was coming off of Brawl and MGS4, the two biggest games on GameFAQs; he had hype everywhere and everyone was talking about him. This year, Metal Gear hype of any kind is pretty much nonexistent, and he's no longer the big 'it' character. That doesn't mean he's going to nosedive to the bottom of the noble nine or anything, just that his popularity definitely peaked last year.

Analysis

To start off our long trek of boring matches is a match to test strength in order to hopefully add hype to the second round. Balthier has no chance at winning while Ryu needs to look as impressive as he can in order to show that he can take on Dante in a repeat performance of their 2003 match. Ryu is the underdog this time however.

Ever since Vaan’s embarrassing performance in 2007 Balthier has been the only representative of Final Fantasy XII and even his performance in 2007 was pretty bad, though he did make it to round 2 in the weakest four-pack. However like Midna Balthier was able to rebound from that disappointing performance by putting up great numbers on Scorpion and Gordon Freeman. Despite that rebound Balthier has no chance for an upset.

A lot of people were hammering Ken for his performance and saying Ryu may follow suit, but that was before Jill showed that Resident Evil 5 provided a giant boost for the characters thus making his performance not look as terrible. Since their previous meeting in 2003 Ryu has more or less stayed constant while Dante has gone up in strength.

Like Midna I have a feeling that some people haven’t forgotten Balthier’s performance in 2007 despite having a better performance in the next contest and therefore expect a crushing. Ryu should win with ease, but don’t be surprised when Balthier shows that he isn’t fodder.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Samus/Mario/Snake is a nice debatable set, but none of them have much of a shot at Link/Cloud/Sephiroth.

Snake does have less going for him this year, but I'm wondering if his stellar performance last year will help offset it. Perhaps after his performance last year, the voters at large are as eager to see Snake make the big upset and beat Sephiroth as we are. I have a theory that characters who do surprisingly well can get a boost that they otherwise wouldn't. However, I know of no evidence to support this and such a boost could be part of the character's intrinsic strength by definition. Oh well, we'll see how things go.
