so Ezio bombimg could be called the Nero effect?
Only other case i can think of where a character looks identical to his counterpart would be Big Boss, the colour swaps like shadow are noticeable enough though.

I think that Sonic 4 has much more potential to do something than Mega Man 9. Mega Man had already been out of the gaming limelight for almost 10 years when he had our first contest, and Sonic's only really been fading since 2006 and his bomb of a game was released. There's a short enough time here where Sonic could bounce back in a way that Mega Man will probably always struggle to.

At the same time, Mega Man's biggest fight to gain popularity is exposure. Sonic's main fight is acceptance. Sure, his game in 2006 brought on new reinforced hate, but this had been going on since the days of the Dreamcast...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=32
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=767

...there are two polls where Sonic's fighting for a distant second-place on Sega's system, and neither Soul Calibur nor PSO are worth much here. Sonic not winning GotY for a Sega-system is kind of like Mario not winning GotY for a Nintendo-system, and we've only got one time on record of that happening...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1128

...SMS has been far and away the most hated Mario-game and MP/AC/MP4 were all in the poll too...but look for SA2:B in that poll, too. That's the best-received game Sonic's had since the 3D-transition, and it still got easily doubled by a very affected SMS.

There's a very strong stigma against 3D-Sonic, and there have already been bigger attempts to make people care about him despite the Genesis being long-gone. Sonic had a great opportunity to redeem himself as a mascot in SSBB, but that failed to do anything for him. He's getting his face around with Mario in the Olympics-games, but it's not like he's much more than an avatar in those like Peach is to other Mario-sports games. Sonic has had 2D-games on handheld systems over the years, but they never really caught on...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1127
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1869

...so I don't really see why Sonic 4 should mean any more for Sonic than MM9 for Mega Man.

Ya know if the new sonic game is GOOD, I can see some kind of disproportionate boost taking place, it's taken so long for a good major sonic title that if this one lives to the hype, well I can see a lot of people coming back to vote for the sonic.

But really the potential boost, depends on how good the game is, he needs some good buzz.

The big question is: Was Castlevania Judgment even that well-received? I dunno, but I doubt it. And after this performance by Ezio, there's just no way to spin this in Ezio's favor. Hell, this makes him a contender for turd of the round.

I can now do my next Battle of the Bands without worrying about some butthurt kid crying across 4 boards over every result.

You know, speaking of that, have you ever considered re-hauling the format similar to the current character battle? 128 entries, 12 hour matches? I think that'd be a nice change of pace, and would also allow for a bit more diversity of bands. Just a thought.

Yeah, Sonic needs a damn good game that lots of people want to play and will shut up the haters because the common belief is that he's been putting out lots of crap for years. MM9 showed being downloadable is probably only going to appeal to your old fanbase, and MM9 was a great game for its fans. Sonic needs more than that...

...in a way, Sonic 4 needs to be Sega's Resident Evil 4. They don't have to necessarily reinvent the series like Capcom did with RE, but the RE-series had started catching a lot of crap for releasing a lot of sub-par stuff after RE3 (not all of it -- REmake was liked, for example). RE4 became bigger than the rest of the series once it released though, and it shut up the former haters. RE4 made the RE-series bigger than the Mega Man-series here -- it was that big.

I hate to paint Sonic 4/Sega in this bad of a scenario, but Sonic's not the same guy he was in the '90s thanks to the '00s, and it's on Sega to make people care again.

But do you trust Sega to be able to achieve that?

Capcom have always been good at reinventing themselves, if something goes down badly, they seem to have knack at picking themselves back up and getting loved again, Sega's gonna have it's work cut out really.

Kind of, Sonic Team is basically a group of Sega programmers that are organized under a common name. They are treated like a 3rd party developer (in terms of creative freedom and structure) when in reality they are on Sega's payroll.

I have little faith in Sega bringing Sonic back effectively like Capcom did for the RE-series; that was a great comeback, one I'm not sure has been matched. I think Sega can do a fine job with Sonic 4 like Capcom did for the MM-series though, so I'm looking forward to the game. I just don't see much importance for it contest-wise.

Personally, I don't think that's the case. The elements are there, if the day levels of Sonic Unleashed were any indication, but the gimmicks and half-assed design have always dragged the games down. If Sonic Team can gets its act together and do a full game of something like that, Sonic could easily regain some of his former respect. Not all, of course, but it'd be a good start.

I thought Sonic 4 is just going to be like the old Sonic games in HD, right? If the controls are tight, music is faithful, and graphics are good (which they should be, because 2D-HD always looks beautiful) then it should at least be decent.

Ezio (and Kratos, I'm guessing) are only slightly stronger than Travis Touchdown! This is irrefutable.

Ezio is going to end over 60%. That's not bad considering his horrendous start.

Also I think this match is a good one for Ezio to start in, because it will get people questioning who he is. Next match I expect him to be stronger on the strength of the pic difference AND exposure to the voters. I don't think we can call Zelda > Ezio a lock just yet.

Eh, Ezio was never going to be considered a favorite against Zelda regardless of how bad he boned fodder. If these new guys (Altair, Ezio, even Kratos) want me to believe they can handle our established Top 15, they've gotta beat entrants with actual strength. I wouldn't have worried even if Ezio were matching Zelda's percentage from last night. Now, if he had beaten someone like Sub-Zero or Vivi (which Altair has a chance to do), then we'd be talking.

Altair will do that in style next round.

That said, I think Ezio might actually have a better chance against Zelda during the day than at night (as crazy as that sounds considering Nintenday vote.) But...it's true. I think most of the kids will vote Ezio over Zelda on pic + badass factor (and eww cooties.)

Ezio still has a chance against Zelda. But like I said from the beginning -- this match wasn't going to be a good gauge of whether or not he could beat Zelda. I think Altair vs. Vivi will be more telling.
