Analysis

Sometimes it amazes me that Phoenix Wright characters can get massive nomination support years after they made their first splash on to the gaming scene. This is Edgeworth’s third contest and if the previous two were any indication his time in this contest will be a short one. Big Boss on the other hand surprised the board in the amount that he won by against Kirby before Raiden caused him to be eliminated in the following round.

I think the big question on everybody’s mind is whether or not Metal Gear underwent a cooling off period after their steroid induced run. Altair winning wasn’t as surprising, but by how much he won took even the Altair supporters by surprised. Big Boss is still decently strong with his Naked Snake picture if you look at his performance against Mario in 2007. Heck with how weak Edgeworth is I would take the Big Boss that was crushed by Auron in 2005 over him.

It seems like we’re heading for a slow stretch of matches, but the last time I said that we got Knuckles/Cecil and Ken/Wesker. Big Boss should comfortably get the doubling, but a tripling may be a bit much for the guy, remember this isn’t Solid Snake; he’s just the original clone.

If Aerith's got a good shot at Sonic, then she's got a good shot at Auron, which I don't think many of us believe she does.

Assuming she did have a good shot at Sonic (I don't believe she does), that wouldn't mean she could ever have a shot against Auron obviously. Auron will put a SFF beatdown on her, because most people that would vote for Aeris are Final Fantasy fans and most of those people much prefer Auron.

What a boring 8 vs. 9 seed match. If anything, Big Boss is underseeded and Miles is overseeded. Oh well, Big Boss has easily got this.

Yep he looks like Solid. It was with a picture like this he was able to straight-up beat Kirby last year. No way is Miles going to be that strong, and he’s even going to be a step below Phoenix (who BB beat easily in 2007).

Whoo Phoenix Wright fodder. Well Edgeworth is a pretty cool dude, at least.

Anyway we've seen Edgey get bashed pretty bad, and Phoenix be rather unimpressive. We've seen Big Boss hangin with Kirby with two dead weights chained to his stubby legs.

Our only hope for an interesting match is that Boss gets an old dude picture, people mistake him for Manfred Von Karma, and Edgeworth SFFs him into the dirt.

Lopen's prediction:
Naked Snake with 74.47% OR Old Man with 60.60% (depending on pic)

It used to be, a few years ago, that I would know who was in every match of the contest. During contest season, I’d even begin to use contest matches as my calendar. Instead of thinking, “ I went to that restaurant on Saturday night,” I’d think, I went to that restaurant on the night of Castlevania/Halo, or something like that.

I haven’t been able to remember matches nearly as well since the advent of 4-ways, and it appears this 128 character 1v1 bracket accomplishes the same thing. I had to look up who was in this match to do this write-up, and it isn’t the first time. Thinking back to the 2008 contest, I might be hard pressed to name even 1/4 of the matches off the top of my head, and I’d be even worse at ordering them.

Anyway, this match is going to be boring, and an easy blowout win for Big Boss. Miles Edgeworth is just fodder, while Big Boss could be considered a near-elite with a picture of him looking like Solid Snake. Edgeworth got 37% on Midna, who went even with Mewtwo who got 41% on Ganondorf, who’s probably close to Big Boss, so I’m going with Big Boss to get around 70% here, perhaps a bit higher.

Guest’s Analysis - Kotetsu534

In the large scheme of things, this match is just Big Boss easing past some fodder. But to the crew, it's probably going to be looked at more for information on how strong other members of their respective series are than for the participants' individual strengths. Big Boss, with a picture that closely resembles Solid Snake, should be capable of putting a good number on Miles, given that the combined might of Kirby, Jinjo and Lucas could barely limit him to 48% of the vote in last year's round one match. Yet no character has broken 80% (except maybe Mario!), and given that Miles held onto 12% while being pummeled by Cloud and beaten by Midna you'd expect him to make at least 20%. Metal Gear is coming off a very disappointing result, and I need Miles to do well for Phoenix Wright's chances later, so I'm predicting Miles to show that when not being crushed by Cloud or Link, he can actually pull some votes.

Prediction:

Miles Edgeworth: 31%

It's not really in Aerith's character to "kick butt" though. Her time on Disc 1 was spent playing the part of a damsel in distress, and being the only character totally useless for physical combat. As a spellcaster, she's a healer... you can't expect "kick butt" from that. The FF characters in KH are, for the most part, true to their original personalities.

I think Cid will get low 40s' on Mega Man. Just enough to stir doubt in Mega's abilities, but not enough for Cid to actually threaten to take the match or make Mega look pathetic.

I don't think Mega Man has fallen as much as Sonic. Sonic has huge backlash from his big games, while Mega Man simply hasn't had any big games besides MM9, which was DLC (granted, the biggest DLC this gen and one of the very few DLC games available on all three consoles). Mega Man's probably fallen a bit, but I'd probably put him around equal to Vincent, maybe even consider Mega the favorite against Vincent. I still think Mega Man could defend the Noble Nine at this point, honestly, though I wouldn't count out Vincent or Squall upsetting him.

The way I see it, Mega Man > elites, Crono = elites, and Sonic < elites. Not that it'll take Mega Man long to fall down to where Vincent could be considered the favorite in a match, but assuming we got that match-up this year, I'd still have taken Mega Man myself, while I'd have taken Vincent > Sonic, and probably would've flipped a coin for Crono vs Vincent (probably would've went with Crono just for fanboyism).

And Ulti, you do realize if you do PCA's this year you'll have to write twice as many as usual, right? Not that I'm complaining since I love reading them.

I've considered Vincent the favorite over Megaman since 2006, although I'm not sure who I'd take now. That's a match we really really need to see. Megaman's not had to face any of the near-elites since Sora in 2006, and has never faced the top end of the near-elite group.

As for Aeris/Sonic, I'd consider Sonic a pretty big favorite but the upset wouldn't be completely shocking. That doesn't necessarily imply she has a chance at Auron because Auron beat Sonic pretty good last year - almost 54%.
