Cecil/Knux
didn't surprise me at all. This match doesn't really either, Liquid is
the most inconsistent SOB in these things. I hate that i let his 2k8
performance lead me to pick him when i knew he couldn't be trusted. --- "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw |

At last, one of the tough picks goes my way, but not the board's. Go Altair! I'd comment on all the projections/implications/etc being talked about, but it's Saturday and I just woke up. You guys are making my head hurt, heh. But yeah, count me in with everyone else shocked that DK had 60% backing. It did not take a lot of research to come up with a Vivi > DK pick for that one. They've already had a freaking match. Wasn't a lot of evidence that things would change much, either. |

...okay,
we the stats-geezers are probably going to get rocked this year. There
are a lot of things not making sense just two divisions in and --
though we don't know exactly when or in what way yet -- there's likely
been a site-shift sometime during our four-way tenure and we
missed/ignored it. Our expectations are hardly standing up in most of
these matches thus far. You said it man, though I'd say L-block winning was the obvious crack of the seismic shift that this site's taste underwent. The average age of the user is different, we've had a new console generation since the 4-ways, it's all just bad news bears. --- http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n237/Danielyoon10/B8sigbet-2.jpg tell me what to put here in my sig! |

This
match doesn't have *anything* to do with Zack. The Altair Zack faced
got 19% on Link. This is very clearly a different Altair. He got last place in a 4-way in that match. Better to base him off of his performance on Duke in round 2 and Duke's performance on Link in round 3. If it doesn't have anything to do with Zack, it does have to do with people not understanding just how strong Link is (i.e. how much 30% on him is really worth). --- 6 years later, Crono's quest to defeat Sephiroth -- Round 1: Missingno 'Till shade is gone, 'till water is gone, into the shadow with teeth bared.... |

HaRRicH | Posted 1/23/2010 9:34:54 AM | message detail |
Sonic Team is a clue we mostly ignored from the four-way contests though, and if it's been like this
since 2007 that's a pretty savage shift for the crew from 2006 to 2007.
Between that and seeing that most older games that aren't Square or
especially Nintendo were nearly forgotten between BGE and BGE2 (don't
know if they're related or not), that's a sign of the site shifting
between 2006 and 2007...which we overlooked ever since then in many
ways thanks to four-ways. It would mak sense though, since we got the
PS3 and Wii at the very end of 2006's contest; they would probably
bring in new gamers to the site. --- T E A M C H O C O L A T E http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/7355/64590879.png |

That puts Altair all the way up to 21% on Link and still pretty clearly has nothing to do with today's match. That's actually quite a big difference- Altair through Duke is projected to 57-43 Altair through Link. That's the difference between Altair and Liquid right now. And it has a lot to do with this match, because 22% on Link and 45% on Luigi aren't that far apart. normal means. So I ended up picking Altair for this reason. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as KrahenProphet, Guru Champ! |

Of course Altair boosted. How much did he boost? Would he double his former self? Would he beat Zack now? It's not like Luigi being well below 30% on Link is unprecendented or anything. He was right around 25% before the Boost. Vincent was worth about 32% on Link in 2007. Set Vincent = Squall and Luigi = Yoshi and you get Luigi around 27%, which still gives Altair a very large boost (more than 60-40 on his former self). --- 6 years later, Crono's quest to defeat Sephiroth -- Round 1: Missingno 'Till shade is gone, 'till water is gone, into the shadow with teeth bared.... |

Liquid
having to rely on a vote-in poll to make it in was the first sign to me
that seemed to suggest Liquid wasn't going to be as strong as last year. Interesting logic. Worked pretty well with Ken, too. Not so much with Rikku, though, unless Kirby's fallen completely off the map and about to lose to Altair. |

The problem with this is you're making Liquid equal between last year and this year. I see no reason why he'd be much weaker this year than last year, a little, maybe. Projections are always about figuring out the most likely scenario, i.e. the one that minimizes extremely unlikely events. If you don't find Altair getting a boost this large surprising, then alright. If you do (and I think most of us do, given that most of us took Liquid), then you'd do well to consider if your assumptions about these characters' strengths in 2008 were wrong. --- 6 years later, Crono's quest to defeat Sephiroth -- Round 1: Missingno 'Till shade is gone, 'till water is gone, into the shadow with teeth bared.... |

Altair
is a special case with these "new gen" characters. Drake's game may be
more loved (arguably, not the point) but Altair by far has the most
iconic appearance of any character in recent years. He's not a measure
of anyone else though. Zidane 65%+ against Claptrap. Doesn't even look hokey enough to attract joke voting, being very liberal with that prediction since it's Zidane. --- :> |

I see no reason why he'd be much weaker this year than last year, a little, maybe. Better question would be how he was so much stronger last year than the year before.
