Alucard would won no matter what the circumstances. Magus wasn't swinging 10% of the vote in his favour.

And here I thought that Alucard was weakening... Either Alucard's stronger than I gave him credit for or CTDS wasn't much help... Though I really think that it'd be easier to draw conclusions after Crono and Frog's matches.

Alucard is weakening. The thing is, Magus is weakening far worse. He's an absolute joke now and could never dream of touching Ganondorf or getting 33% on Link.

And Ezio is the main character in Assassin's Creed II. And I agree, Ezio who? I think people will be surprised when he faces Simon, I don't think he'll do as well as everyone thinks.. certainly nowhere near Zelda level (yes, some people are boneheaded enough to take that upset in the Guru) though I suspect they have a twinge of AC2 fanboyism. I'd consider giving Simon a chance in his match with Ezio except that Simon is absolute crap, and Altair did surprisingly well in the 4-way polls despite many people disliking his game.

It's funny how we have a surprising amount of 2/15 matches with upset potential when you consider that we've never had a 15 > 2 upset before this contest! Now we just need to see a 14 seed upset a 3 seed again! I suppose Freeman could lose to Peach because of this mystical aura, but based on strength, I doubt it. Peach might be stronger in 1vs1 though, but Freeman has come quite a ways from 2006, and at the very least we've seen Nintendo characters doing worse throughout the contest. I think Liquid Snake beats Altair, but who knows? I am certainly regretting taking Liquid to beat Vivi though!

Not so sure. 2005 seems like it was Kirby's best year. He probably hasn't changed much from that year one way or the other though.

I can agree with that. Oh how the mighty have fallen... From getting 33% on Link to being jokefodder.

Wow at the bolded. And I also would consider giving Simon a chance if only he wasn't crap. At any rate, I wouldn't be too surprised if Ezio gets out there and embarrasses himself.

Analysis

Whenever somebody gets screwed by bracket placement there is always a few matches that people refer to saying that their character would have defeated the winner of the match. I could argue over half of the losers so far in this contest would be able to win over the winner of this match. This match would have been a contender for the lowest vote total had the match been during the night, but with this being the day match it almost guarantees that the match will outvote WCC/Sandal. A lot of people went with GlaDOS, but I think the match could go either way.

Last year GlaDOS was able to give an acceptable performance given the circumstances. The problem comes with Falco flopping in the next round with the first sign of strength. The main reason is that for matches where the winner is obvious people tend to support the weaker characters which mean GlaDOS’ performance last year may have been inflated.

A drop in strength from Portal is a possibility. Back in the previous contest Portal was all the rage from The Orange Box, today there seems to be a lot less talk about it. On the other hand WCC got 78% on its opponent, sure it was against a random person, but that must count for something. GlaDOS also has a very different picture for her match and from what I can tell people seem to think that’s her best one, it still won’t give her any advantage to the many fans that won’t know either character, but looking at last contest’s match she won’t need it to win.

The performance of Fawful entirely depends on the popularity of Mario & Luigi, especially the first and recently third game. Considering the guy was able to get in with minimal board support says that he at least has fans, but whether or not it is enough is debatable. Fawful is a very likable character in those two games and like GlaDOS he doesn’t have much recognisability outside of people who have played the game.

Due to the recognisability being so low in this match I feel that the picture will be the ultimate factor in this match which is bad news for GlaDOS. The match picture is essentially an eyeball against a green guy with a big grin if a voter didn’t know either one of them which would they vote for, not voting doesn’t count.

Geno is an embarrassment and shouldn't have gotten back into the contests after his first outing. Ness has the Smash vote at the minimum, and no one to snatch it from him here. That should be enough.

I think Kirby is being underestimated in this match (Rikku's probably overperforming due to square vs nintendo). Just wait until he's in the next round, it's going to be ugly no matter if he faces Fawful or Gladdos.

I just realized that there's no way for Sonic to overperform if he gets his sprite. It may seem reasonable (and people are saying that it'll happen, which is is why I'm saying this), but Sonic's sprite didn't rescue him from almost losing to Squall-with-FF8-polygon-and-Sora-leeching-off-of-him.

As far as GLaDOS vs. Fawful, seeing what looks like an anatomical sketch of the human eye go against a cartoonish guy with a big grin is scaring me about GLaDOS's chances, especially since I was stupid enough to back the Portal villain in my bracket. But everything new Mario has been disappointing left and right except for the 2007 GOTY polls on this site, and Portal impressed us in the contest, not to mention that the game was named the 4th best game of last decade by Destructoid, beating out stuff like Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, World of Warcraft, and such...then again, that list did not have Brawl, Twilight Princess, or FFX and Shadow of the Colossus was 1st, not to mention that Silent Hill 2 was in the top 15 and look how well that worked out. But it still shows that people care about Portal.

Then again, Destructoid's list seemed to have an overemphasis on cultish stuff. I mean, CAVE STORY was in the top 25, Persona 4, Pikmin 2, and Deus Ex were in the top 20 (this while SSBM and KOTOR failed to make the top 45, no less. And I'm sure that some Board 8'ers will be happy to hear that Persona 4 was recognized on such a list), Silent Hill 2 and Okami were in the top 15, and in the top 10 only 6 well-recognized games were present, out of which Shadow of the Colossus is very mixed reception while Diablo II, Portal and God of War II aren't exactly critical darlings, making the bottom two spots RE4 and SMG in addition to #2 slot HL2 the only "mostly unanimous praise" titles, with Valkyria Chronicles, Beyond Good and Evil, and Mother 3 making the list for "having unique qualities." Bleh.

Rikku is one of the main characters from a game that is coming off being voted "Game of the Decade" on this site. Kirby's performance against here, while some might consider disappointing, actually isn't. From what we've seen so far, it would appear Square has boosted quite a bit for whatever reason.

Don't let this take away Sonic's performance against a character from a game most voters haven't even played yet. Kirby > Sonic is still a great pick and one I still believe in.
