I dunno, 2006 looked pretty good for Sonic. It's hard to tell how that was for the team as a whole, because the crazy gimmick bracket shut most of the others out, while allowing yet another fodder character in. But beating Crono and reaching the Final Four must count for something--and 55-45, while convincing, is hardly "blown away"--better than fellow Niner Mega Man did against Snake that year.

And let's face it, Sonic as a franchise has never held much strength in these contests. Tails has always been fodder, right from the start, and it was considered somewhat of a surprise when he managed to win one in 2004. Knuckles...actually, this is probably Knuckles' worst outing yet. Knuckles' history used to be to win in round 1 and then lose to Snake in round 2, and he actually managed to beat some decent first-round opponents during that period--Yuna in 2003 and Kefka in 2004. Hardly elite, but definitely not fodder, either. Also, he usually managed to get around 40% on Snake, which isn't too shabby, even if Snake was weaker then than he is now. He then managed a first-round upset of Magus in 2005 before losing to Squall, 53.8-46.2, which quite frankly is probably better than you'd expect. 2006 saw him shut out by the male-female gimmick, and 2007 and 2008 had him again beating the opponents he should beat and losing to the opponents he should lose to--his only fault was running into too many NNers and top midcarders too soon. Knuckles, it seems, is fated to always run into an elite opponent within the first two rounds--and this year, not only is he struggling with what might be his weakest first-round opponent since 2002, but his second-round foe is none other than Sonic, who thanks to SFF will probably deal Knux his worst beating ever.

Shadow? Mixed results at best. He's a polarizing figure in the Sonic fandom, so he'll get anti-voted plenty and is probably severely limited. Still, in his first appearance, he managed to score 44.9% on Mario, and he suffered from rough draws in 2007 (Auron, Ryu, and Bowser in a second-round foursome? Yeah, he belonged in fourth place there) and 2008 (With Link in round 1, you know you're just competing to get into the high teens for second place--and poor Shadow got stuck with an FFer). Still, no excuses for 2004 or 2010.

All in all? The Sonic fanbase has been stronger than you might expect. I'm a Sonic fan, and I admit it, the supporting cast sucks. Knuckles and Shadow are probably the only decent ones there, and they've both shown that they're, well, midcarders.

...wait, Amy Rose got into the 2006 female bracket, but Rouge didn't? How the heck did that happen?

It also scares me that if Cecil now looks impressive, is there an Old-School Square boost so huge that Kefka might actually not humiliate himself?

Nah, FF6 characters always suck. Arthas and Revan are safe.

This makes sense if you consider that Cecil should be stronger than Kain (and that Knuckles has fallen off of a cliff of sorts), but I was having a lot of trouble giving Kain respect to begin with.

...more importantly is that this makes Zack a KING OF SFF <_<

Tails did well in the vote-in...but considering Tails's track record in contests and the trends of Shadow/Sonic/Knuckles so far this contest, that;s not going to mean much. Kratos is going to pound on that two-tailed freak.

In 2007, Knuckles narrowly defeated Rikku who was being LFF'd by Vaan. Knuckles was supposed to win easily and treaten Yoshi next round. In 2008, Knuckles was the slight favorite to beat SFF'd Zelda. Knuckles failed to pull it off.

Dissidia wasn't that big in a pretty weak year for gaming, handheld games don't tend to help out established characters often (shut up Zack), SSBB only did so much for fodder, and wasn't Dissidia stronger at night than at day anyway?

Just saying, we've seen three Sonic characters suck beyond our already-low expectations in the past sixty hours and we haven't seen any other Dissidia-characters yet.
