I imagine we'll get one of those "Which FF game is your favorite?" polls shortly after FFXIII is released, so we should get a decent idea based on how it does there.

When the release date of FFXIII approaches closer, I will request Bacon to run a "Got FFXIII?" poll on the release date of FFXIII. Now, that means running another poll in addition to the match. The FFXIII poll would run for a full 24 hours, while there would be two 12-hour matches. Running 2 polls at the same time is rarely done, but I feel this is one of the few exceptions where it should be justified as FFXIII will be our next biggest release.

Really, Sonic's been hated on ever since the change to 3D. SA2:B has its fans and I think some of the Sonic Advance games have been accepted by the fans still following the series, but Sonic's been getting ripped since SA in 1999 and hasn't been able to find a way to keep many old fans ever since. Sonic was the most requested guy in this generation's biggest game -- the strongest game on Sonic's resume at that -- yet he's still not catching a break with anybody. He's a tarnished legend.

...does anybody think Sonic would have beaten MC at GameSpot?

Weird thing about Sonic is when I managed Gamestop, the ONLY people I saw buying his games (and they always sold asstons) were little kids. We could never keep Olympics, Brawl or Unleashed in stock. A ton of people actually think his newer self is cool.

I am still voting for Sonic until he meets Link, if only to try to keep my bracket alive. For what it's worth I still haven't gotten a match incorrect (though I thought Shadow would win, even though I picked Ammy to win in my bracket).

Ironically, the classic Sonic games seem to be receiving more attention these days going by "Best Game Ever" lists. But of course GameFAQs can't be bothered to care about SNES classics. Come to think of it, Sonic had no big release between '94 and '99, just like Mario between '96 and '07 and Samus between '94 and '02. Might that have hurt is strength all along?

Sonic Unleashed soiling Sonic's name makes sense. Mario Sunshine soiling Mario's name makes sense, BUT just to mention it Mario Sunshine has much more critical acclaim (heck, on Gamerankings Mario Sunshine has more critical acclaim than MELEE. But SSBM's lowest scores were 5/10 and 6.5/10 while SMS's lowest score was 8/10, which surely helped things), and I actually like Mario Sunshine quite a bit (but voting for it over SSBM, no! Though according to Official Nintendo Magazine Sunshine > Pokemon RBY > GoldenEye > Melee, hilariously enough). So I'm going to hypothesize the reason for Mario's decline and why this site doesn't care much about his new games:

Super Mario 64 had the critical acclaim, but got quickly drowned out by other games of its generation. Final Fantasy VII, GoldenEye, Ocarina of Time...even Half-Life (and rarely, StarCraft/Diablo/Quake) on other sites, to name a few. And there was no major Mario platformer between '91 and '96 (obviously this does not count Yoshi's Island because it stars Yoshi instead of Mario), which definetely didn't help, especially when considering the load of games that might've drowned out Super Mario World, such as Link to the Past, Mario Kart, Doom, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger (obviously not all on GameFAQs!) to name a few. The 5-year MIA was neutered somewhat by Mario 64 having so much critical acclaim, but Mario Sunshine didn't have the acclaim, and thus people fell off the Mario series like a stack of bricks. For many critics and people the main hooks of Mario Galaxy looked to be the new physics mechanics and the return of lots of old stuff (goombas, koopas, fire flowers, super mushrooms, etc.) that most GameFAQs people probably do not care for. We need to see Mario Galaxy's playrate on this site, because of lots of people haven't played the game then that can perfectly explain what is going on. Or the other explanation: Mario Galaxy is too short a game, and I don't take that as a criticism considering the very franchise Mario Galaxy is part of (both 64 and Galaxy seem to have around the same length, with Galaxy being a bit shorter but also packing more "meat" in it), but considering all the multiplayer games and "OMG so much content!" games that people are walking around with that's kinda suicidal.

Sorry, but I don't see how not having big releases in a time period before the contests even existed would hurt his strength then or now.

I read through the whole topic and didn't see anything about this - maybe it was covered in the last one - but when I voted, I saw a "vote for Sonic" campaign thingy underneath the poll results, with a Facebook link.

Did anyone else get that when they voted? Has that been there the whole contest and it shows up for your selection?

Also, count me in for the Knuckles > Sonic bandwagon. It'd ruin my bracket, but who cares if the results are entertaining enough.

Analysis

It’s such a shame that Knuckles was given one of the most predictable paths in the contest. With all the debate about where Sonic characters rank he could have been given at least an interesting position in the bracket. Anyhow this is also the first match that will give us any information of any kind of Dissidia boost to Final Fantasy characters in the bracket.

While it seems that Dissidia was able to give a boost of nominations to the Final Fantasy crew I feel that the overall boost to this characters will be minimal at best. Being a game on the least popular system doesn’t exactly scream out boost. There is also the problem of many of the buyers were already Final Fantasy fans. The only characters that may get a meaningful boost are Cecil, Terra and Jecht, though he’s new. Still competing with Knuckles would be quite a jump.

I feel that Knuckles will be the first true test when it comes to the Sonic Team’s future in this contest. Shadow losing to Amaterasu didn’t help things as that match was predicted to be close when looking at four-way matches. Knuckles’ path is pretty much set, but Sonic has some competition before he can make it out of this division and gets crushed by Link.

Unlike the Hyrule Division this division doesn’t have a hyped match every day. There’s a couple of interesting matches later on, but like 2007 we started off with a bunch of great matches though as the round went on the exciting matches became more spread out.
