Well, people here are certainly more familiar with Star Wars, at least now - when FFVII was the strongest game on the site it was much closer. If people like Vader, Yoda, Han, et al as much as Cloud and Sephiroth they could probably do pretty good - and I'd wager people do like them as much.

Well, he got stomped pretty badly in the South in the election of 1860. Didn't make the ballot in 10 states and got 1% in the 11th.

Actually, he only ended up with 39% of the popular vote, which turned out to be a plurality thanks to the Democratic Party splintering and there being 3 other candidates. But, interestingly enough, even if all their votes had been given to one person, Lincoln would have still have won a majority of electoral votes.....while getting 60-40'd in the popular vote!

Although yeah, 1860 election results probably don't have too much bearing on how he'd do in the South now.

Analysis

Sackboy set the trend last year to include characters to games that have not been released yet, though since the bracket release Final Fantasy XIII has been released in Japan. After his performance last year the bracket placement for this contest Sonic is the most likely Noble Nine character to fall with matches against Ganondorf and a rematch against Kirby in the future. Sadly we won’t know the danger he is in until his match against Ganondorf, I guess it’s a way to add suspense.

Final Fantasy XIII is currently the most hyped game on GameFAQs, though at the same time it isn’t as hyped as say Brawl. I would use Brawl characters from 2007 as a measuring stick, but both Meta Knight and Pit were stuck in SFF situations while Ike actually had a fanbase outside of Brawl. At the same time LittleBigPlanet wasn’t as hyped as Final Fantasy XIII and Sackboy was stuck going against Solid Snake, probably his worst opponent. Still looking at it the best Lightning could do seems to be just above 30%, unless there is some underground hype that I’m missing.

If Lightning does break 30% you can expect people to spell out Sonic’s doom despite not knowing how strong she really is. Personally I think breaking 30% is a best case scenario and that she probably won’t get it though at the same time I don’t see Sonic tripling her unless he decides to go back to his 2006 strength.

No, this is one of those cases where I wouldn't be surprised if the main character wasn't the strongest one from the game.

But that's just my personal bias speaking. I'm not a huge fan of Cecil.

As much as I want Cecil to have been terribly, horribly SFFed by Zack, I don't think it was by enough to make his match with Knuckles/respectable. He's still the same guy who got 75/25'd by Kirby.

I think Knuckles will get around 60%.

I don't think this will be quite the same Cecil as the Kirby match - a non-Amano pic will help. And Cecil probably was SFFed by Zack somewhat.

But yeah, Cecil shouldn't be as strong as Kain.

I figure Knuckles/Kefka goes similarly to 2004 (Kefka, unlike Magus, already had a reputation for being weak even then, while Magus was still our hero against the evil oppression of the Noble Nine) and Cecil is probably around Kefka level after FFIVDS.

I agree with cn - the best thing FFIVDS did for Cecil was give him good artwork. (It certainly worked for Rydia anyway.) Remember that Kirby/Cecil picture? It looked like he was melting.

Even though I've got Sonic winning his division in my bracket, I'm tempted to vote against him, just for the chance of Knuckles getting farther than him.

Knuckles is pretty much screwed, though, since he can't beat Sonic, and if Lightning beats Sonic (very unlikely, I know), then she'd almost certainly beat Knuckles too.

And I lose my perfect bracket to The Boss, of all people. That's what I get for ignoring Drake's history, I suppose. (Even if it was from a 4-way.) At least I actually like The Boss, unlike Ocelot or Shadow, so that helps a little bit. I guess. ...bah.

As for tonight's match, I'm hoping for big things from Lightning. Expecting them, even. I'm not brain-dead enough to predict that she'll win, and that's not what's on my bracket. But if she did, I honestly wouldn't be surprised. (I'd be too busy laughing.)

Lightning could be absolute fodder. But, we've learned from Brawl, Snake, Master Chief etc. that hype often means a lot. I think lots of voters will recognize Lightning from her picture, even if they don't know her name, because they've probably seen trailers.
