I've always had the feeling that it's pretty difficult for fodder to blow out bottom of the barrel fodder. Would CATS really get 87% or whatever he's supposed to get on Tanner? I have my doubts about whether he'd break 80%- at some point most of the voters simply won't recognize either character, and then if they still vote anyway, they'll just split 50-50 or vote based on the picture. It's true CATS/Tanner would get extraordinarly low votals, but there's a certain base level that contest matches really don't drop below.

Didn't Ryo get 72% on Guybrush?

Then again Ryo wasn't that weak in 2002.

I was thinking about it tonight. Which character from 2002 do you guys think would do worst if they were brought back in a modern match?

I am thinking Ulala would do pretty terrible. I didn't even know who she was THEN (I later discovered Space Channel 5 and regret not being aware of it). But really, do you think 95% of teens today would have even heard of her, much less prefer her in a bracket.

It's 2k2, so who knows if things like that are repeatable. However, it does suggest that weak character can serious beatdown their opponent if their opponent is weak enough. I'm not sure what happens if you get to truly weak fodder.

Analysis

Even the most biased against joke characters people must take at least one to the second round. With 128 spots and a handful of joke characters one would think SBAllen would have separated them a little. Heck this match isn’t even debated though there is no consensus as to the percent the winner will get. While I still stand by joke characters being weaker in this format that kind of gets thrown out the window in this match as this match becomes who is the bigger joke.

WCC has the main advantage of being in a contest before and scoring a few major upsets so it at least has some recognition. Another advantage is that WCC is seen throughout most of the game and while the same can be said about Sandal the scene that made him famous happens near the end of the game while Portal reminds you of the cubes.

While I feel that Portal has been slipping over the years and Dragon Age would probably win in a match from playing the game I feel that Sandal is not recognizable to even fans of the game. When the bracket was released I didn’t even know that he was the Enchantment guy until someone brought it up. I would like to bet that Sandal would perform better if site ran Enchantment in the background or his name was changed to Enchantment guy from Dragon Age.

Interestingly enough Sandal made it to the bracket with no previous appearances or board support so I feel that there is support for him, but as seen in the past nominations doesn’t mean that he will have a respectable performance. It's a shame that he's the only Dragon Age representitive.

Kirby.

As Ulti said, Shadow's match means nothing. Ammy was, and always has been a solid (low) midcarder. It's just that she's been in SFF/LFF matches in every match before this one.

But that doesn't mean I think Sonic's got the advantage. The Kirby defeat is still in many people's heads. I still see Sonic edging out Ganon thanks to the sprite round then losing to Kirby.

(I'm just hoping Ganon doesn't make it out of his division, otherwise Link meets the pig and lol xstats)

Magus sucked much harder than expected despite CTDS and Shadow's losing a winnable match. Kirby is VERY tempting, but I just don't have the kind of faith in Kirby. Sonic's not in a four-way and Kirby's not pulling off a string of upsets...plus Ganon should beat Sonic before Kirby does, so probably not, but who knows.

And curses, I still have only gotten Auron > Shadow in R1 from 2007 right in all of Shadow's matches. This is ridiculous.

I see nothing wrong with Ryo/Guybrush as Guybrush matches up well with other years based off of it. It does imply that there were no anti-votes in Lara/Ryo, which is odd, but possible I guess.

There's the obvious tendency to overreaction around here...but Sonic Team has looked godawful in *every* match since 2007, and they just lost their fourway excuse. I think it qualifies as a trend by now.

I think Sonic is still the favorite. Today's match at least, changes very little: Shadow isn't really embarassing himself considering Ammy put up very solid numbers last year too, and we really don't have a good idea of the proportion between Sonic and Shadow these days.

And in many of the matches where you can cry Nintendo overlap, there's something for the other character too. Yoshi/Knuckles? Rikku/Vaan. Zelda/Tails? Vincent/The Boss. Sonic/Sandbag? Auron/Magus. There aren't any excuses left for Sonic Team.

I would take Big Boss to defeat Mega Man if he had his Naked Snake pic. Otherwise, he wouldn't beat Kirby to begin with.

And yes, it is obvious that Sonic Team sucks now and they've fallen a long long way. But 2006 Sonic 60-40'd Luigi; he could afford to fall a long way and still pull out a narrow win against Kirby.

I expect it should be fairly close, and I'll be rooting for Kirby unless my winning a prize depends on Sonic winning or something like that. Ganondorf would probably take down Sonic before Kirby, although with the sprite round, perhaps not.

No, I mean Sonic. Big Boss got 48% in a 4-way with Kirby in it last year. If you're willing to say Kirby > Sonic is the probable result, then you have to give Big Boss at least a shot at beating Sonic.

2006 Sonic beat Crono who beat Auron pretty easily. 2008 Sonic lost to Auron pretty easily. Given the augh fourway percentages caveat, that works out to 2008 Sonic getting less than 43% on 2006 Sonic given a constant Auron (seems more or less reasonable, he had KHII by then). Sonic falling even more this year does not seem terribly unreasonable.

I'd be very tempted to take Big Boss > Sonic if it was guaranteed that he'd get a Naked Snake pic, but I still don't know if I'd pull the trigger on it. Besides, Kirby didn't even really look that impressive in round 2 either. He stands out like crazy against Chief, Big Boss, and Raiden, and he barely beats the Chief by 1%. Heck, he only gets 54.60% on Big Boss being held back by Raiden. Not very impressive.

I'm a big Kirby fan and I'm rooting for him to pull the upset, but we're not going to see the Kirby we saw in the quarterfinals and semifinals. We're going to see round 1 and 2 Kirby.

I've always thought Kirby beating Sonic was truly a one-shot deal, due to "WHOAOMG HE BEAT MONSTAR CHEIF CONTEST FINALIST!" in the eyes of the casuals. Thus he gained a pretty big boost due to how it surprised those not in the know, kind of like how Frog went to 48% Snake after his struggle with Chief. Does that sound plausible?

Auron actually projects 2008 Sonic to around 41% on 2006 Sonic I think, even worse for Sonic, but then, Kirby was only at 38% on Sonic in 2006.

Round 1-2 Kirby from last year won't be enough to cut it, but Kirby from the later rounds would probably be the favorite. We can toss round 5 clearly, but other than that, it's hard to know for sure which round was most accurate- 4-ways are confounding like that.
