Yoshi didn't do anything to Snake with Brawl SFF. That was the sprite round.

I've been a fan of calling it a combo of the two factors.



Didn't stop Snake from turning around a 57/43 beatdown against Mega Man into a 55/45 whoopin' in his favor. I'm not sure what Sephiroth has to do with anything. He has no ties to Nintendo, so it's not going to affect Brawl hype.

I was just trying to say when you have somebody incredibly popular and a classic Nintendo-character in tons of games including SSBB's predecessor (regardless of her own strength, which isn't terrible since she beat Jill), SSBB-hype for a Kirby-rival isn't going to stand up very well. Hype for characters like him would mean more if he was facing fodder or non-Nintendo.

Comparing MK's hype to Solid's hype is ridiculous as well. Solid single-handedly got SSBB and MGS4 hyped to holy hell and Mega Man is only quasi-Nintendo, plus in 2005 (between the first Mega Man match you referenced) he looked better against Mario than in 2004, so covering that gap wasn't all hype.

But you don't beat a character as popular as Mega Man and turn around such a big margin (It's still 55/45 Mega Man in 2005) if hype doesn't matter. And Meta Knight doesn't have to have hype as big as Snake's to beat Peach and Wario.

I think our core difference is that I think hype falters to some degree in SFF-matches or when the hyped is still clearly outclassed by an opponent, and I think MK was facing both of those situations in 2007. Solid was hardly outclassed by Samus the same way MK was outclassed by Sephiroth and MK's hype meant little in comparison to Solid's hype if you ignored MGS4.

And hype didn't matter at all for MK beating Wario cleanly. They were both hyped equally, both outclassed by Seph, and Fox stole any meaningful SSBB-hype there. Wario wasn't strong, I know you agree on that. I just don't think hype mattered much if any in his match with Peach either.

If Meta Knight's SSBB hype train got stolen by LFF, then there's absolutely no way he wins. Meta Knight is weak without Brawl. You say that hype falters in SFF matches, and here's Meta Knight saying, "Oh yeah? Watch this." I'm not sure why you think that. Samus was probably just stronger than Snake in 2006. That's not hard to believe. Snake beat Sonic 55/45, but Samus beat him worse than that in 2004.

For the whole Big Daddy/Soap match, one must take into account that it occurs only a scant five days after the release of Bioshock 2. And is a night match. So yeah...

A night match doesn't favor either one, really. They're day characters.

We also never saw MK before SSBB-hype, so we've got assumptions on that where we can't really try to prove on either side. I figure MK wasn't much stronger in 2007 than he was pre-hype, certainly not weak enough to go from 54.25% to losing...and how much stronger is Peach than Wario anyway? MK had 56.95% Wario when the hype was no longer an issue, and I think we give Wario more **** than he deserves sometimes. He wasn't as hyped as MK by people because he was basically a gimme ever since he was snubbed from SSBM; MK was more of a cool surprise. They also had the same source and approximate face-time from the trailer, which was why I was calling them hyped equals.

Anyway, I think we lost course. MK's shown in small-percentage battles that he can defend himself in SFF-battles. It hasn't been seen yet if it will translate to one-on-one against his strongest Nintendo-opponent yet, but it's hard to imagine him caving in bad at this point.

Maybe its just my noobishness, but Bioshock seems to have a cult element to its fanbase/popularity. I just expect it to be stronger at night than a CoD character. I'm probably wrong though.

I don't see any reason to think this. Kirby games aren't popular, and Meta Knight isn't in many of them anyway.

I remember the MK-defense from the people who took him to advance in 2007 was saying he was all design (much like Kirby), plus despite not being in many games I think he was one of the most requested characters...after, you know, the dozens that were already in SSB/M. The hype was definitely the reason why he, Pit, and probably Wario made it into the contest...but -- like how EB is why Ness keeps getting into contests -- I don't think it helped them much in strength, at least in their scenarios where they were outclassed and dealing with other SSB-characters.

Peach, Wario, and DK aren't that far below Luigi, Bowser, and Yoshi. A sort of joke in 2003 was that DK equaled Luigi in the x-stats.

2003 aside, Wario got like 42% on Zack with a little bit of help from other RPG characters in the poll, and Peach equaled Jill.

Wow, Price is looking pretty good. And if Soap > Price like I think it is, Soap > his fourpack of ass looks pretty damn likely. All in all, a good match. Anyone else want to wager that Price does better on X than pkmn trainer?

Wouldn't look in too much into Price's performance... I think he's looking stronger than he is. There's a real division in the gaming community. Either you just love CoD or you really don't. There's almost no middle ground. So he'll put up respectable number against most characters, but you could probably have any random character (except for FPS and maybe joke characters) in the history of man and he'd still wouldn't go over 65% (especially if the other character had even the faintest semblance of cuteness to it).
