the Boss remains a surprisingly heavy favorite over Drake

Considering where he started off from he did pretty well. Support peaked for him during the GotY poll, but fell again during GotD and today.

Board favourites always get a lot of support. I remember when the brackets came out it was mostly Albion and I against the whole topic during the first week.

i'd say gordon has the 2nd best chance of winning this contest... since clouds chances are 0%, and at least gordon has the potential steam rallying!

I don't know about that. A lot of people have been very doubtful about Red's strength for months, and the initial response when he was brought up was very negative. Charizard was the board favorite, Red is the one that it took KP and I comparing him to Crono and arguing that he had a gigantic range to even get his nomination rally going.

Seriously? I seem to remember quite a few people taking Vincent. I mean, there was plenty of support in the stats for it, and Sephiroth/Mario had already proven VC Bowser and Ganon were frauds.

Well, in 2005, it was like 148 to 4 or something ridiculous for Ocelot/Pac-Man. Ridiculous because very few people were surprised when Pac-Man won- it was just a match nearly everyone considered just slightly favorable for Ocelot.

The best part about Ganon/Vincent was that both clearly boosted, and yet Vincent still won by about the amount the X-stats said he would.

...at least, I'm pretty sure the stats said Vincent > Ganon.

From the Guru:

rpguy@galileo:~$ grep -c Vincent 2k6
77

105

That's not that lopsided. (Though it does count people who took Vincent/Ganondorf over Sonic, but that's probably a wash.)

I can tell you by the time the brackets closed Ocelot was still the huge favourite. It was throughout the round that people began thinking about the upset. I think the match picture was the breaking point.

That was a pretty important match in contest history, actually. It was the match that brought the Square near-elites into dominance over the Nintendo near-elites, until nowadays only Ganondorf and Zelda are even considered near-elites on the Nintendo side, and barely at that.

At the very least it might be able to tell us something about Arthas. If Thrall doesn't completely fold here (like low 80s), then Arthas should be pretty much a lock to beat Kefka.

Well, after the way Nintendo dominated in 2005, that was to be expected. Square beat Nintendo a grand total of 2 times in 2005: Tifa > Luigi and Sephiroth > Mario.

But yeah, only Ganondorf and Zelda are considered to be that level, and a lot of people don't even think of them that way. Heck, was there more support for Ganondorf to beat Sonic back in 2006 than there is now, despite how weak Sonic has apparently become?
