A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything.

If it were a 24 hour match or a night match, I'd pick Snake. But MGS is so god-awful during the day, I don't think Snake can do it.

MWC said the same thing about Snake/Sephiroth in 2008, except that in that one everyone else on the board was debating Snake/Cloud. And there's nothing wrong with that- for a match like Snake/Sephiroth, there should be people calling Sephiroth a lock and insulting Snake pickers, or it's not contest season.

The thing that scares me is not the time of day of that match but rather that it is only 12 hours long. That's 12 fewer hours for Sephiroth to catch up from whatever crazy early vote Snake gets. Still going with Seph though.....I kind of agree with Wylvane that Snake and the MGS crew will come down to earth a bit this year, and 2006/7 Snake wasn't strong enough to pull this one off. He'll still be stronger than that probably, but perhaps not at his 2008 levels anymore, and he'll need every bit of that strength and probably more to beat Sephiroth, despite all the other factors in Snake's favor.

And Ulti, it used to be that this being a day match would be a big point in Seph's favor, but nowadays FFVII and MGS are pretty even at the day vote. The 12-hour thing is scary for FFVII characters though, as I said.

Match I: (1) Link vs. (16) Thrall

Information

Name: Link
Game/Series: The Legend of Zelda
Previous Contest: 2008
Performance: 1st in round 6

Name: Thrall
Game/Series: Warcraft
Previous Contest: 2007
Performance: 3rd in round 1

Analysis

While we missed a 2009 Character Battle because of the games and GameSpot contests at least we didn’t have to wait until summer for the 2010 contest. Also for the first time since 2006 we are back to one on one; though as an added twist each match until the semi-finals is only 12 hours in order to accommodate 128 characters. Given the expected vote trend differences and not having any reliable stats in years it is expected that there will be a few unexpected results that will burn the board.

One thing that is for certain is that Link is by far the favourite to win the contest, even giving him the disadvantage of having only night matches until the semi-finals won’t hamper his dominant abilities. Link continues the tradition of something Nintendo always starting off the contest. The only question on everybody’s mind on this match is whether or not Link will get the biggest blowout of the contest. Doing a quick look through the bracket the only other characters I see that could outdo Link are Mario and Cloud.

Poor Thrall he gave it all he got to win a spot from the Vote-In poll only to be given a match against Link. Given the weirdness I wouldn’t put too much stock into those polls when it comes to strength. His sole appearance in the contests was a match where he lost several updates to Ratchet throughout the day. However before that he was doing pretty well, at the half-way point he was getting 27.90% on Ganondorf while at the end he only ended up with 25.62%. While I feel that overall people will catch on that there are two matches a day and vote accordingly I feel that it will take a couple of matches before large portion of the voter base notices, especially for the night matches since some people only come to GameFAQs later in the day as oppose to multiple times throughout the day.

I expect Link to get around 85% in this match. With it being night Thrall could get a respectable performance should he break 15%, but I’m having a hard time picturing Link failing to break that mark even being at a slight disadvantage.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Link > Thrall

charmander6000’s Prediction: Link wins, 85.53% - 14.47%

plus, gamespot is the bigger cnet site, so even if they don't, its probably because they care more about allocating big hits and stuff to their main gaming site.

MWC was also heavily against Snake > Link in GameSpot's contest.

Link would have crushed him. If you don't believe this just wait another hour and watch! (I don't care that this is bad reasoning Link is awesome and how could any site vote for Snake over him?)

By the way, since I still see "ON GameSpot: The All-Time Greatest Game Hero revealed" (it's on my page right now) and remember everything SB/GameFAQs did to advertise their contest, anybody else think it's BS GameSpot's not advertising for our contest?

Whether or not that is a good thing to me depends solely on whether I think GameSpot voters would favor my favorite characters. The answer is probably no.

I think it would be a good thing to get an influx of voters that aren't the pure gamefaqs type of voter, for one. But then again, I'm kinda getting tired of the constant nintendo/square domination.

The domination has been a lot less recently. Square hasn't won anything since 2005, and Cloud hasn't even been able to get 2nd 2 contests in a row. On the Nintendo side, with the Deboost, it seems only Link and the Legend of Zelda remain dominant while large sections of the company are falling away.

Predict it - The number of votes submitted during average night match or day match during the board vote only

There hasn't been too discussion on this one, especially what we expect the board vote of a day match to get as far as votals.

My prediction:

Night matches - 1200 to 1600
Day matches - 800 to 1100

SB did made mentions in his blog though, plus we had a sticky on this board about it. Then, once the contest started, we had advertisements for particular matches and had a link to their contest at the bottom of every PotD. Considering GameSpot did a contest GameFAQs had been doing for years, came to GameFAQs for vote-stuffing prevention, and their contest delayed our contest...it sure would be nice of GameSpot to give a mention to a contest on their sister-site that's twice the size of their contest.

I'd be cool with that for a contest. Maybe not forever, but it might shake up a contest and the people who liked it can stick around.

I just think GameSpot should give some kind of mention considering GameFAQs bent over backwards for GameSpot's first contest. I remember they had a banner up for a few days in 2005 for GameFAQs low on their front page, but that's all I've ever seen them support us.

Wow, I see a "% Correct/Partial" on that page. Looks like that will need to be fixed somehow.

Also, these 2 pages are working now:

So Sephiroth ended up a decently heavy favorite over Snake, Alucard ended up the favorite over Magus, and the Boss remains a surprisingly heavy favorite over Drake. Overall, there's a lot of differences in opinion, much better than back in 2005 or 2006 when we tended to groupthink a lot (why we favored Crono over Sonic something like 80-20, when we were only expecting him to win with 52%).

Glad to see Arthas is the overwhelming favorite for once.

Not surprising considering his opponent.

No match for KrahenProphet's extreme Guru skills.
