They may have significantly improved the gameplay, but Drake is still Drake Uncharted 1 is still a very good game that got great reviews across the board. Its like a 90% on metacritic I think. argued that Uncharted 1 was played and not that liked for awhile, but
was faced with claims that it really was overlooked even within the
PS3-fanbase. Either way though, like 30% of the site had a PS3 when it
bombed in 2007's PS3-GotY, so that's something like 22% less than we
have today and its much-improved wider-advertised sequel... ...see, dammit, this is why I hate switching sides in close matches: I've pretty smoothly transitioned to arguing for Drake now. I'm gonna stop here and state the obvious: it's anybody's match. Drake
is still Drake, but that's a good thing. He wasn't weak before because
people didn't like him, it was because his game was a new IP that
didn't get much attention when it was released -- it came out at the
same time as Call of Duty 4 and Mario Galaxy, for those who don't
remember. Looking at today, the PS3 has improved significantly in both
image and sales, both to GameFAQs and the mainstream; Uncharted 2 has
taken pretty good advantage of that with more critical acclaim, more
hype from fans, and reaching more people with better sales (it's
already outsold the original Uncharted). Drake isn't going to be a top
tier character, but he can definitely take someone like The Boss. Not

HL1/2
is a good step in the right direction, but let me try explaining what
I'm looking for a little deeper. Mega Man had some attention, but Mega
Man 2 came out and is still arguably the best game in the series. MM2
would obliterate MM1 head-to-head, too. Do we have another example like
that where the series just started off with the wrong game? HL1 won all
sorts of GotY-awards and was revolutionary in its own right, so it

Drake's
problem is that he's a regular guy. he doesn't have anything that makes
him stand out besides his tongue, and even that's not all that special.
Dante has his ridiculous scenes and his superpowers; Kratos has his
rage and his blades; Snake is a superhuman. Drake is just a dude. --- xyzzy |

I
don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I mean, it will be what
keeps him from reaching the level of other action characters like
Dante/Kratos/Hayabusa/Snake, but he's got such a likable personality
that people who have played and like Uncharted will also probably like
Drake. Luckily for him, The Boss is much more on his level than those
others, so he doesn't need anything particularly 'special' to win that

he's just sarcastic and sharp-witted. trust me, there is a reason he
bombed in 2007: he is a generic looking guy with generic qualities that
is put into wild situations. he is not particularly exciting on his
own. it's the story that carries him, not Nathan carrying the story. --- xyzzy |

yeah,
I agree with HM. I'm just saying that if you're trying to work out some
formula whereupon you say Uncharted > Ninja Gaiden and therefore
Drake > Hayabusa, you're completely wrong. there's a reason that
Altair is more popular than Drake while Uncharted 2 is more popular

sure,
and I'd say the same thing, but you and I both know that GameFAQs goes
for "cool" characters and Drake kind of lacks that special something
that will endear him to everyone. he is not an icon on the level of
these other guys. you don't look at him and say "man, I want to get

Yeah,
I don't disagree that's he got a generic look about him. I think that
makes him less appealing to people who haven't played the game, but
works for those who have, which means he's probably not getting any
real support for his 'cool' design. Then again, it probably helps that
his opponent looks like this --

I think both of them could win, with The Boss having a natural advantage right now for having been in a contest and looked stronger. Ah, I thought he actually did, like, stuff with his tongue...okay, cool. I think Drake's problem is that he looks like an actor cast as an action star instead of being a bad-ass. In that picture, for example, he looks like a dirty well-groomed model -- faded blue jeans, his long-sleeved shirt rolled up, a wristband (watch, maybe?) that matches his belt and holster...it looks like there was too big of an attempt to make him fashionable, if that makes sense. yep. Drake's design sucks. The Boss has an awful design too, but MGS means a hell of a lot more than Uncharted. people come for Snake and stay for Boss; people don't have a reason to come for Drake at all. it takes effort to get people to play Uncharted, which is why it sold one tenth as much as MW2. --- xyzzy |

Let me try it this way: remember the PS3-commercial about Uncharted 2, where the guy said he couldn't get his girlfriend to stop watching him play because it was so much like a movie? ..remember how that woman was hot? Drake's design is appealing to those women. Ocelot lost to Jill Valentine and Kratos after having his biggest role in the series. Raiden wasn't too far off from Kain Highwind. nobody's arguing The Boss is top tier. Heck, most of us aren't even
arguing she's not fodder. It's certainly not out of Drake's league to
win this, but he's the one who's got a lot to prove. We know where The

I'm not saying that Boss is strong. she sucks. but Drake has already shown that he sucks beyond anything any MGS character could ever do. Vamp could have beaten 2007 Drake. The Fury could have beaten 2007 Drake. Crying Wolf could have beaten 2007 Drake. Drake would need a pretty huge boost to top that. will he get it? maybe... maybe even probably. but I wouldn't feel super confident in it either way. this poll doesn't change what we already know -- a.) that Drake doesn't have a great design and b.) that this poll is overblown because 2009 sucks for AAA games that GameFAQs cares about. --- xyzzy |

Yep,
I even said as much a minute ago. The Boss should be favored to win
solely because she's shown to be a more popular character before.
Doesn't mean that Drake doesn't have a really good argument and really
good chance to win, though. I think people are fixated on the wrong
things when they argue who wins this. It's not Drake compared to Dante
or Snake or Kratos, it's not even a Uncharted vs. MGS. It's just which
of these two weak characters is more popular with today's crowd. I'm
inclined to believe that's Drake, but it wouldn't surprise me if The

Everyone
is giving him a chance, but that's why a match is debatable, because
there is a chance it goes both ways. Saying that it's not debatable is
stupid, even if it turns out to be a doubling for either character.
It's not a "benefit of doubt" situation, either character could win,
