I just don't know if I can trust Trainer after looking after that pic. Hardly anything from Brawl has succeeded in these contests. I guess it depends on what Brawl characters I'd actually take over Ocelot.

40% on Kratos is...not impressive. I dunno, depends on where you think Kratos is. The last 1-on-1 contest we had Kratos in he was around Rikku levels (pre-God of War II), but the year before that he would get whipped by her. Kratos (really, it seems like anyone based on losing to Ryu) is weird.

As mentioned, he's really a behind-the-scenes villain who mostly pull strings and puts on a personal show for the hero. Not to mention his expanded role in the series is really a huge twist given he was just a goon for most of MGS1. That doesn't really translate well into publisher marketing material because it's more of an in-game impact.

I don't claim to know the Pokemon-fanbase as well as, well, most people in here...but it really seems frivolous to be condemning Red's chances now that he has a SSBB-pic. "Red" is still in his name both for the pic and option to pick him, RBY/GSC have been played by enough people here for his name to be recognized, and the SSBB-model still looks quite a bit like what his sprite and original artwork presents.

(looks to me like the first picture's the oddball if anything, but I'm not a Pokemon-guy)

This isn't a case of Solid **** or ZSS where nobody will recognize him; this is a hyped playable character's model from SSBB, not a terrible sprite from a game few people have played anymore. This is more like a Naked Snake-situation, and that didn't hurt Solid because they look nearly the same. For a 2D-to-3D conversion based off of the artwork, Red looks like a success to me. Pokemon-fans are going to see both "Pokemon" and -- more importantly -- "Red" in the title, plus maybe having "Pokemon Trainer" can snag some extra votes.

If Ocelot wins, I don't want to hear a thing about the picture. If Red gets his artwork in R2 and beats MMX, I don't want to hear a thing about the picture then either. The sprite, well, you likely have an argument, but right now I'm unconvinced this matters at all.

Also, here's a loosely-related hypothetical situation: say Squall Leonhart was only called "Squall" in his matches until KH came out (that's right, all one of them, work with me here) since he was mainly called Squall in FF8. Since Squall's called Leonhart in the KH-series, his name in polls became "Squall Leonhart" instead of only being "Squall" or "Leonhart." Do you think that would have kept any FF8-fans from voting for Squall, even when KH-pictures are used?

If you'll give fans of his enough credit to recognize Squall Leonhart as Squall or Leonhart regardless of where his pics come from, have faith that Pokemon-fans will recognize Red as Pokemon Trainer Red with the SSBB-picture. I get the issue is that it is canonically Squall Leonhart in both FF8 and the KH-series whereas it's not proven it's Red in SSBB...but he's named "Pokemon Trainer" and looks like Red. People who know Red from before SSBB should at least see the association, and that's much better than Solid **** and ZSS were able to do in the past.

I'm glad to see the return of the sprite round in round 3. I don't really believe the theory that sprites help CT characters, or at least, I don't believe the effect is anything more than very small, but it's one more thing that can help Crono impress against Sephiroth. I mean, I'd be glad to see the sprite round without any benefit to Crono too.

The Squall from Kingdom Hearts was the same one from Final Fantasy VIII through and through. The only memory people had of Red in Pokemon was that he was the character that you controlled, the Brawl character doesn't feel like the same guy.

It's hard to explain it, but I guess you can say that the connection is not there.

I am floored that people are using this picture to condemn Red. wasn't a Brawl picture expected? he's very clearly a Pokemon trainer and has a pokeball in his hand. seriously, what's the problem here? that he's not a crappy GBC sprite and therefore no one will vote for him? if people will only vote for him based on a crappy oldschool picture then people don't like him in the first place. if he loses, it's because he sucks, not because of a picture.
