~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

Assassin's Creed II, Batman, and Borderlands in the multiplatform poll will make up for everything.

NSMBW was fun, and I hear good things about Uncharted 2, Batman, AC2, and DA:O.

Doesn't seem that bad a year to me.

Probably still about 60/40. That's about what she got when they me in 2007.

Megaman was in that match though, so Samus can probably do a couple percentage points better than the 41% she got twice. And now that I look at that match again, wow did Megaman look bad. Just 39% on Samus and 31% on Cloud? The Noble Nine should be really thankful the last 2 contests have been 4-way. Interestingly enough, Megaman did less than half a percent worse on Snake the next year than on Samus in 2007, even with Zero in the poll against Snake. I'm not really sure what to make of that.

Eh, real gaming is dying. Has been for a long time.

Best gen since the 16-bit games IMO. Don't really like most of the games of the previous two gens, but now the technology has led to some amazing games.

Fallout 3 is easily my biggest favorite game this decade, and Galaxy is also very high up there. Plus NSMBW looks to be the next 2D Mario game I've wanted since the early 90's, based on the first two worlds or so. Plus there's a lot more awesome games out there, including downloadable games on the consoles and a rise of indie games thanks to services like Steam.

HD-level graphics, online play, huge depth, amazing physics, and all that while making the games as fun as ever, if not moreso. This gen is ****ing awesome.

This gen is very good so far, and I haven't even touched the PS3 yet. I still have that to look forward to, as well as Nintendo's second wind with their Big 3.

Nostalgia? But I've mostly been playing PS2 games I never played before. That's not nostalgia, that's just this generation being terrible.

This gen has been half and half. Some good, some bad, not anywhere near as good as the last one, but not terrible. The original games have been great, not so much for sequels.

Oh wait, 1993 also had Doom and the original Star Fox, which actually kinda hurts that year in my eyes. I'd rather have a random 2009 game selected for me than play some of 1993's "best."

Thing is, that's all 2005 had. At least 2009 has a lot of decent games, even if there weren't any killer apps besides MW2.

I still think this year is decent, even if it doesn't measure up to the last two years, since 2007 and 2008 raised the bar pretty ****ing high.

1993 had a lot of good games for Genesis: Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force II, and Phantasy Star IV all came out that year. On the other hand, none of those are Sonic, so who caress?

1993 had a lot of good games for Genesis: Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force II, and Phantasy Star IV all came out that year. On the other hand, none of those are Sonic, so who caress?

PS4 and Shining Force 2 were 1994.

I honestly think more people would have viewed 2009 favorably if they had owned a PS3. All trolling aside, its exclusives clearly won the year. Uncharted did get legitimately touted as a Game of the Generation contender, and Demon's Souls was apparently very good. Ratchet and Clank is also a series that usually delivers (at least judging by its PS2 installments), and inFamous was received well. Despite that, it was still a year that the multiplats won with games like SFIV, Batman, RE5, MW2, Dragon Age, and AC2. That's some good quality. I don't think 1993 competes.

I always love these nostalgia posts... perhaps the most biased review in gaming. You can take a look at many franchises... FF, Zelda, Mario- and when people state their favorites, even if they have played them all, generally you can guess when they started gaming by what they state is their fav.

I accepted this long ago and decided to take a more objective appreciation of games. I used to wonder why I couldn't *enjoy* games as much as I used too- then I realized it was the nostalgia factor. At almost 30, and with 22 years of gaming, games just wont have that cool oh-em-gee factor they did when I first popped in SMW on the brand new SNES... or the first real FF7 cutscene I saw on PSX.

This Gen rocks every other gen to date- both on individual levels and holistically once you take out the nostalgia factor. Nonetheless my fav games will almost certainly have games like Fallout 2, SimEarth, FFIII, and... Oregon Trail.

I say this gen is terrible.

Favorites, respective to the franchises you listed: X-2, The Wind Waker, Galaxy. Guess when I started gaming.

Yeah, but Halo Wars is an RTS...very different from the rest of the Halo-series, and considering that ODST isn't looking very respectable in comparison to its competition, I don't know if Halo Wars would break 10% if ODST was removed.
