To give a non-OOT/FFVII game a chance of winning of course. I guess you could make a case for CT and MW2 as well, but CT probably overlaps too much with everything to take too much advantage of the massive Zelda and FF SFF flying around, and MW2 just isn't strong enough.

Ocarina and FFVII still massacre that poll. In fact, all the earlier games would get SFF'd so badly (with the possible exception of Chrono Trigger) that MGS3, RE4, and CoD could end up fighting for third place.

I'd probably take LoZ:MM > FF9 for 2000. I'm also discounting CoD4 being a contender for third if MW2 wins this year's GotY, and the same goes for RE4/MGS3 if they affect each other like we thought they might have in last year's BGE2.

Give me FFVII for first pretty easily with that list. It's only got 3 FF games to deal with while OOT's got 4 Zelda games, but more pressingly, if we extend this out to companies, FFVII's got only 5 Square games to deal with while OOT has to fight off 9 Nintendo games. If we have Majora's Mask instead of FFIX, the numbers before even more lopsided.

CT's the big favorite for #3, though it may have a shot at beating OOT for 2nd, especially if Majora's Mask is there. CoD4 stands out a lot as long as MW2 doesn't win 2009, but I don't think MGS3 and RE4 stand out enough to make up for them just not having the strength to contend for 3rd. KH could also do some damage- it should be the most independent of the Square games. Maybe it should even be the favorite for 3rd.

It's within the realm of possibility (especially with MM instead of FFIX) to have the top 3 go FFVII, CT, KH, with poor OOT beaten under a crushing amount of LFF (from strong games, mind you) That would be hilarious, but the downside would be people wouldn't shut about about how this is SquareFAQs and Cloud always wins for about 5 years even as Link and Zelda win every contest.

Heh, I just realized that KH is about equal to RE4 in strength, so is RE4 wouldn't be contending for 3rd, neither should KH.

But, you know what? I stand by what I said. I think KH would be more independent than RE4 in a 20-way poll like that. I don't think a lot of that KH ASV has even played a Final Fantasy game.

And for the record, don't take Squall/Sora and FFX/KH as indication that KH doesn't get SFF'd. For one, they're 4-way polls (which I guess is relevant in this discussion), but games/characters similar in strength often don't SFF very much or very hard. FFVII and Cloud are different stories.

But Sora did do better against Squall when Cloud was in the poll, just not by enough to win. Throw in a few more FF characters (probably just one in this case considering how close they were), and Sora's got it. And the other thing is that as Cloud and Squall are both in KH, Sora's not going to stand out as much as KH would against FFVII and FFVIII.

Yeah, but Sora's the main character. He's going to get the better end of the SFF there from people who've only played KH, which I'd imagine isn't that large of a group.

But the point is, KH isn't that independent. It's not getting 3rd place in that poll under any circumstances.

Well, being the main character doesn't guarantee you anything (thinking of Tidus and Auron), and Cloud is clearly a character whose design the site loves. I understand the argument that RE4 should suffer less from LFF in this poll than KH, but my gut feeling is that in a 20-way poll like this, KH will shine. RE4's going to overlap with everything, including FFVII, OOT, and those other high level Nintendo games. I think there's a segment of that KH ASV, a small segment, that's really really independent, and a small segment is all you need in a poll like this where 10% may get you 3rd.

Star Ocean is the only Eastern/RPG title on that list apart from Magna Carta 2 and Ninja Blade, both of which seem to be awful fodder. I guess I can see it doing well based on that and the combined weakness of all options.
