A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything.

Hmmm...Uncharted did worse in North America and the U.S. than it did overall. In fact, it did the best in Europe and the UK.

Since you posted a trend chart for Nathan earlier, I decided to take that and do a trend chart for Uncharted 2 and see how that compares to Nathan.

Time | Nathan | Uncharted 2
EBV | 6.99% | 42.36%
PHV | 6.67% | 44.21%
FNV | 6.65% | 43.77%
BSV | 7.00% | 44.67%
DSV | 7.26% | 44.51%
ASV | 6.83% | 43.26%
SNV | 6.34% | 42.56%

Not to mention Albion wanted to see what kind of day vote Uncharted 2 has, so that's also why I did that.

Dissidia was always going to win this poll. Don't let the much less advertised PSP-version of LBP reflect what LBP on the PS3 means for Sackboy. Since we haven't seen Sackboy since 2008, we've never seen him with a game behind him before...so you still have to consider both versions of LBP, and they're clearly not identical games in terms of strength. It doesn't hurt that they're on different systems, either.

The argument supporting Drake is that Uncharted 2 was so much bigger than the first, mainly because it didn't have a MGS4 to deal with. I'm still wishy washy on that whole situation.

On the same notion, I doubt 1 v 1 helps Sonic Team much, if at all. In 2k6 Sonic get absolutely pasted by Snake.

So did Mega Man. So did Samus. If it wasn't the 4-way format, it may have been Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 turning people off of the blue blur, because in 2006 almost everything makes sense (well, at least on the REAL side of the bracket)

Although LBP PSP is not a proper representative, it's still strange to see it barely beat something like Monster Hunter. In a poll like this, franchise votes are pretty much all that's shown. I guess LBP sucks as a franchise.

ZFS | Posted 1/4/2010 10:04:01 PM | message detail
That makes sense. LBP is only one game to most people; it doesn't have any real 'franchise' pull yet. I wouldn't take this to mean LBP's forgotten, or unpopular, or that Sackboy is screwed, though. Dissidia dominating everything else is the only way this poll could have gone, because it's the only game that people are both familiar with and have actually played.

Franchise voting is overrated. Just look at the difference between OOT and MM or FFVII and FFIV. It does exist though.....let the NES sink into history for a few more years, and Zelda 1 will be able to beat Mario 1 on franchise voting from younger voters!

True. Give it a few more years and a warm reception for Zelda Wii, and LoZ might have enough to overcome that 55/45 deficit. Even if it doesn't, the Zelda series still has the stronger game on 4/5 Nintendo consoles. Bow down, moustache man!

I think GOTY polls usually have a lot of franchise voting because, let's be honest, how many new games does the average gamer play per year?

Well, the majority of GameFAQs buys 5 games or less per year. When you take into account the number of games in these GOTY polls, there's bound to be a lot of franchise voting. People will just vote for the franchise they like best in polls where they haven't played/didn't like any other game in the poll. I know I do it.

Yeah, GameFAQs doesn't tend to stray too far from its comfort zone when it comes to games. Anything from an established will almost always best a new, unique game, regardless of the quality of the former. That's why it's such a Nintendo/Square fest come contest time!
