~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

You know, regarding that legendary overperformance, it makes you wonder: how much is the NN dependent on appealing designs? If you had to break down their popularity, what parts would it boil down to? Thinking something like this:

1) Design.
2) Opinion on their games.
3) Actions.
4) Nostalgia.
5) Bracket.

Plus anything else I might be missing. On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate our strongest characters?

Depends on the character. Games is the most important for all of them, or else Crono and Sonic wouldn't be getting weaker, and Snake wouldn't have boosted from the joke that almost lost to Bowser to the guy who many are seriously picking over Sephiroth. Design's pretty important, though moreso for characters like Sephiroth and Snake than characters like Mario. Nostalgia's in there, keeping the FF7 characters and all the other mascots strong, and probably the main force in keeping Crono afloat all these years. Actions, eh, that'd be better replaced with character design in general, and even then I don't think having an in-depth character really matters when it comes to strength. There's, what, Cloud, Sephiroth, and Snake, and their strength is more from being in some of the largest games on the site. As for bracket votes, I doubt that's a real factor, and if anything there's more people looking to upset the status quo these days, thus bandwagons like L-Block and Kirby.

Are you saying that after that, Big Boss will go off to lose to the likes of Ryu and and then look absolutely terrible a few years later by losing to someone like Balthier thanks to SFF?

And we lready know Big Boss is not a pushover. Shadow was just new at the time, not to mention half of those newcomers (Magus, Zero) overperformed in their matches and were exposed in later contests.

Big Boss has went the exact opposite way; went from looking horrible to pulling off surprising performances. Big Boss is getting anywhere from 37-44% in my books.

I doubt it's happening, but I'd love for Big Boss to pull a Shadow. Maybe after that people will finally realize that Mario isn't all that strong anymore, and was never as strong as some people seem to think he still is.

I grew up hating Disney, and a game focused on Disney, no matter how much FF there is as well, is a recipe for disaster for me. I gave it a chance, but I just couldn't stomach it any more by the time I got to Tarzans level.

Gotta agree with Albion here about Kingdom Hearts. KH1 was a disaster, but KH2 was fun enough at least. Nothing great, but at least it was playable.

From the time I played it, the storyline was very weak as well, and there wasn't much reason to connect to it unless I assume you knew the disney stories. Not knowign the stories, nothing really made sense.

I grew up watching Disney movies and I can safely say I don't care for them! I don't hate them or anything, but my opinion of them is pretty low compared to most people on the board.
