~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

So Pokemon Platinum or LoZ: Spirit Tracks for DS GotY?

I'd have to say Pokemon Platinum. It's been out for longer and LoZ: Spirit Tracks has only been out for less than a month.

On the subject of GotY polls, if you assume they start on January 1st, there could only be a maximum of 14 of them (last year had 16). I am expecting a total of 12 polls to be run and they will the following:

Best Xbox 360 Game

Frog > Bowser tempts me so so so much, as much as I know it's not happening. If it were a night match (or if it were a character I disliked intensely instead of my 2nd favorite Nintendo character in Bowser's place) I would take that on principle.

You know, if it were a Night match, I'd probably pick Frog too. How much does Bowser usually scoop during the night? He doesn't seem like someone who would gain a lot, while Frog could probably reap the benefits there. Frog would just have to survive the morning vote to take it.

The thing is that Bowser has always been closer to Mario than Frog has been to Crono. It's true that characters from the same series are not joined at the hip, but it should be pretty safe to say that even now Bowser is still a fair bit closer to Mario than Frog to Crono. Bowser looks like he has taken a tumble the last few years relative to the rest of the Mario cast, but that just makes the Mario/Bowser gap a little bigger than the Crono/Frog gap as opposed to a lot bigger like it was before.

Ignoring the night/day thing and the 12-hour format, for me to take Frog > Bowser in a normal match would require me to take Crono to not only beat Mario (I'm more than willing to do that), but to score at least 53% or so on him, based on my own estimates of the Mario/Bowser and Crono/Frog gaps. That's......not completely impossible, but a bit too much for me to take.

Well, the whole idea of Frog > Bowser was based on Frog getting a pretty big boost from CTDS to put him in Bowser's league. But this isn't like Mario/Crono where a moderate (meaning Crono gets 53-55% on his former self) boost could push Crono over the top- Frog needs a truly large boost, something like Kingdom Hearts in 2003 or Snake's Brawl boost in 2006, to beat Bowser.

It's...possible, barely. I don't remember Sora's trends, but I'm pretty sure Bowser's power hour vote is very good.

Kirby>Sonic is a hot upset, though if Sonic is cracking, it'll probably be to Ganondorf.

Bowser's one of the better Nintendo night characters, actually. DK's probably the best relative to his overall trends. His day vote sucks.

Bowser's has pretty balanced trends as far as Nintendo goes. Good power hour, below average night, good morning, below average DSV, above average ASV, below average SNV. Basically the standard Nintendo trends, but with a somewhat less potent day vote than most Ninty characters.

Apparently, God of War is somewhat popular in South America, and BioShock beat out God of War in America. That game seems to be a good bit more popular here than in other parts of the world.

He might not even beat Duke. Beating Kratos is insane. Kratos has gone up in strength a lot every year, and last year did extremely well even while sharing all his polls with other casual bait. Charizard > Kratos means Char would be also be able to blow out Ryu, or something. That's nuts.

I'd say I'd have a hard time seeing Duke beat Charizard, but then I remembered I said something about Altair beating Lucario, and he nearly lost to Isaac.

I would still take Ryu over Kratos, but I know what you mean. You know there isn't much space between Kratos and Sora/Bowser so I'm kind of surprised for the lack of people taking him as the division champ.

I think there's more space between Sora and Bowser than there is between Bowser and Kratos, personally.

Yes, I'm aware. I just remembered that I caught myself assuming too much of Pokemon strength last year (I had Niko > Lucario in round 2 for cryin' out loud).
