Missingno would have to be a step or two ahead of Pikachu the time he beat L-Block, which isn't his usual strength anyway. Throw in CT:DS, and it's an upset you won't see me take.

when is that game even coming out?
Near heavy Rain would make sense since well prototype pretty much came out along with infamous and with good marketing a PS3 exclusive would get crushed, since Sony's marketing has been **** in the last few years.

But MORE importantly, any characters from that game with Potentuial strength in a Gfaqs contest?

Though I think not having enough character development especially from the western side of gaming may have something to do with it.
I mean for say Fallout or Oblivion, big games, well loved, but it's in the you are the character mold so that doesn't allow a single character to really emerge, here it sounds well different.

Balthier was weak as hell in his first contest, but grew stronger afterward because of more people playing his game. Same thing happened with many other newcomers or high fodder/low midcarders who recently got another game starring them.

I'm expecting to see boosts from Altair, Drake, Midna, and other characters like that this year.

I don't know about Midna. Her appearance has been out for 3 years now and she looked no different in 2008.

Altair I suppose you could make a case for him, bu tI wouldn't bank on it. Drake is PS3 which makes me quiver.

The problem with Drake is that he has a generic name and a generic character design, so anyone who hasn't played the game isn't going to know who the hell he is and isn't going to care.

So it all comes down to how much the PS3 base has expanded in the past year. The Boss isn't really all that strong, but Drake does have a lot of ground to make up there.

Yeah, Uncharted 1 was really a sleeper hit overshadowed by a lot of games that year (I doubt people knew who Drake was at the time).

Uncharted 2 was Sony's little darling this year and probably accumulated for most of their 2009 hype. He should be at least boosted above fodder levels. Especially since Drake was featured in more advertising this time.

No, Alan Wake is like Max Payne. He doesn't have the character design that Ryu uses to kick ass and take names. He's total fodder.

And Gordon's transformation has something to do with the Face CATS effect and bursting into a new market. Drake's doing neither of those, so I expect him to be bad fodder instead of turbofodder.

I trust Drake will improve a lot this contest from last year. That said, he's starting from being easily doubled by CATS last year while The Boss has beaten Tails. To compliment that, we've seen CATS get last place in one of the vote-in polls while The Boss got second place in one despite Raiden AND Tails be a close third place in another poll to Cid/Aeris. Uncharted may have been a sleeper-hit on the PS3, but it was a recognized one on GameFAQs; people forget it was runner-up for PS3-GotY in 2007, so it's not like it was ignored by the fanbase. There was also this poll about how well-received Uncharted 2 has been so far here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3684

We have watched a PS3-game struggle to keep up necessary percentages to win as more options are removed (MGS4 in 2008's GotY-polls), so Drake has no easy road ahead of him to beat a MGS fan-favorite one-on-one, especially since MGS3 and Big Boss have impressed lately as well and Uncharted 2 hasn't done much to make an impact here yet.

Not that there are many opportunities to see it happen this year anyway, but if Sonic ends up biting the dust early (or if Missingno/Zack pull some wilder shenanigans than I think is possible), are we going to agree that it's a loss to the Noble Nine?

If the Noble Nine loses here, they're finished. This is a real 1v1 tournament, and losing here would be no more an excuse than losing with a bad picture. After all, the Noble Nine has never been about strength, they've been about victory, and about the semi-miraculous fact that a group of 9 characters chosen from the 2002 field has never lost to outsiders.

Until this game comes out: Max Payne will just be a disappointment in every match. That's the way I see it...it's been, what, 6 years since Max Payne 2? Yeah, that will lead to character atrophy.

Just look at the competition:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2986

When Ratchet & Clank wins anything easily, you know you have a weak field, and this is coming from one of the biggest R&C fans on this board.

But since Ratchet just had Crack in Time come out a few months ago, I guess he's set to beat Phoenix/Jecht, right?

Don't worry, I know that was a weak field. Still, it did well enough to where I wouldn't call it a sleeper-hit and "Drake" was in the title so he wasn't some complete unknown.

Still, it did well enough to where I wouldn't call it a sleeper-hit and "Drake" was in the title so he wasn't some complete unknown.

I usually call it a sleeper hit because it wasn't the most advertised PS3 title that year (Heavenly Sword, of all things, had Sony's attention that year) with CoD4 and GH3 getting all the press, attention and sales. It rode a wave of solid scores and a really excellent presentation (Uncharted 1 has the best script and voice acting of the last few years) and had consistent sales to overcome that.

That's really what a sleeper hit is: didn't have a lot of advertising and really was not the company's focus but rode word of mouth over the course of a few months.

I guess the reason why I'm so behind Nathan Drake is because he is seriously the best written and most entertaining character the last few years. I just want to see a performance (well, good enough to turn heads) from him this year.

I also kept forgetting there was a R&C game coming out this year and am still like "oh yeah" when I see it on the shelves of EB Games. The series is fine and all but Insomniac is nearly an assembly line developer at this point.

Heavenly Sword looked promising and certainly like a solid GoW clone...but god damn was it just underwhelming in every way. I can't explain it any better: it wasn't a bad game but just lacked the presentation and sense of accomplishment that GoW nailed so well. Just no polish, is what I'm trying to say.

So where does everyone have the cube at? Right now I have him making it all the way to the division final. i don't know why but I always think jokes are stronger than what they are. So I have cube>Boss and cube> Luigi and don't feel confidant at all in either pick right now

I think the era of joke entries crushing all in their path is over. It'll beat Sandal, no problem, Dragon Age is still too new for a lot of people to attach to a character (the fanbase is just enough right now to get characters into the contest). The winner of Drake/Boss (I have The Boss) is likely going to lose to the Cube, it's a joke character but can edge out of that one.

It falls to Luigi; like I said, the era of joke entries making noise is over.

I think it was billed as Jason Rubin's last Jak game before he went off to work for Nintendo (that was where he went, right?). Everyone knew that Sony was going to milk the series afterwords even if they said nothing to that effect.

With R&C...we will see spinoffs and prequels and stuff for years, Sony isn't letting that series die.
