I
don't think Albion is saying Barret is a contender, he's just saying
that he likely had more noms than a fodderous character like Tanner and
missed the FF7 cut. This is entirely possible. Though in the individual case of Tanner, I must point out that the 2k4 nominations started at the same time Driv3r came out, so that helped Tanner immensely. --- SSBB FC: 4425-1156-3590 According to the Krahenprophet, Dweebenheimer! |
Team Rocket Elite | Posted 12/16/2009 12:42:36 AM | message detail |
Tanner
didn't necessarily get in because of nominations. Only the Top 32
nominations getters got in based sorely on nominations. I'm willing to
bet Tanner got in just because he was from a recent game and probably
got a couple nominations. Also Aeris wasn't even in the Top 100 that
year and Cid was probably even worse. Tanner actually getting more
nominations might not be as surprising as you might think. --- "Those whose memories fade seek to carve them in their hearts..." "All dreams are but another reality. Never forget..." |

Another
interesting factor here is that with twelve hours, rallies are going to
be incredibly difficult to pull off. I can't see 4chan, Steam, or
Twitter rallies doing too much damage in a 24-hour fourway match, so
what the hell are they going to do in a twelve-hour 1v1 match? Even if
there are less votals, I doubt they'll be half a 24-hour match, more
like 70-80%. That still won't do much damage, so I wouldn't expect
Gordon to steamroll through the competition or L-Block and WCC to go
past their intrinsic strength. I think rallies could do more damage here because 12 hour matches are going to get lower votals than a 24 hour match. They were never really that effective on here because of the high votals per match. Rallies will probably be more effective in the day matches than in the night matches because more people will be online then. We've already seen rallies do considerable damage in GameSpot's contest, though votals were much lower and also spread across a period of a week. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as KrahenProphet, Guru Champ! |

Valve
has enough rally power to affect even 24 hour GameFAQs Contest polls.

What other rallys were there in the GameSpot contest? 4chan was rallying a bit in the contest, for the Bub/Bob matches. I don't know if this was 4chan or not, but Cloud in round 1 was losing updates to Lester. Valve has enough rally power to affect even 24 hour GameFAQs Contest polls. Yeah, we saw firsthand a few days ago that Spy was capable of pulling in over 30% updates in a 12-way poll. So Valve should be a big rally force here. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as KrahenProphet, Guru Champ! |
Team Rocket Elite | Posted 12/16/2009 1:26:46 AM | message detail |
4chan
was caught cheating in Bub&Bob matches so I wouldn't count that as
a rally. I get the feeling they were behind the Lester vs Cloud thing
as well. --- "Those whose memories fade seek to carve them in their hearts..." "All dreams are but another reality. Never forget..." |

Alright, a few thoughts on the bracket. - SB completely sucks at designing brackets. Sonic vs Knuckles, Auron vs Aeris r1, Sephiroth vs Vincent, then Crono, then Tifa... ugh. But in spite of that this is STILL ten times better than the four way crap we've been putting up with, and the ToC BS before that. I would have been so excited if we had this format for BGE2... better late than never. - Magus vs Alucard - I picked Magus because I figured both he and Alucard have been dropping for years, and CT is still bigger than SoTN. But I forgot about Magus losing to Sandbag, I'm not sure if I'll reconsider this one. - Mega Man vs Cid - I've utterly and completely lost faith in Mega Man at this point... I always hope for good things from him and then he goes from nearly even with Sephiroth to getting blown out by him, to getting SFFed by Link, and from beating Snake by 14% to losing by 10%, and finally to losing to Weighted Companion Cube. So screw it, I'm picking Cid here. - Dante vs Ryu - Has Dante had anything recently? I pick Ryu here since SF4 was pretty big and it's hard for me to picture Ryu losing this when he's more relevant than he's been in 10 years. - Guybrush Threepwood makes the contest yet again, as a 9 seed! I wonder if the Steam release of Monkey Island will boost him... if so maybe he'll break 11% in the xstats for the first time ever. I'll probably vote for him because of the Steam rerelease. --- I made a living on time trial blowing myself off to cross the finish line at ludicrous speed. -transience |

my initial breeze through without analyzing much and looking at past

personally love that Guybrush makes it back every year. I don't
understand how he gets a 9 seed though...I know I nommed him but I
can't be in the majority on that one. >_> How Vincent got to be on the other side of that 8 seed, I'll never understand either. Couldn't Guybrush have faced Laharl, Cecil, Niko or Llyod? You know...someone he might have gotten some votes against. And I can't personally stop looking at this fourpack: Vivi DK Altair Liquid Not that I can even decide if they go on to face Ganon or Sonic after... --- I thought I'd never change, but FastFalcon beat me into shape! |

I'd still love to know how the hell Gordon ****ing Freeman got a 2 seed. What has he had in the last 2 years? Gordon Freeman has just won the GameSpot Contest which GameFAQs linked to a lot, so people here catches on. but I have a funny feeling that his match with Peach will be hilariously close than it should be, especially since it's gonna be a day match... I personally love that Guybrush makes it back every year. I don't understand how he gets a 9 seed though...I know I nommed him but I can't be in the majority on that one. If Phoenix can get a 3 seed, I don't see what's wrong with Guybrush getting a 9! I
hope 2011 has the Top 6 out for a ToC with the two finalists and a
better bracket. Watching Crono, Mega Man, Vincent, Squall, Auron, and
Kirby battle it out for Contest Champ would be fantastic. I have been behind this for years. it won't happen but those six and then the winner/loser of the final being thrown into a top 8 contest a la 2005 would be the best possible result. as you said, Sora's division is probably the best one, along with Sonic's. as for the whole Pokemon thing, Charizard is a reasonable pick. I won't be taking it but there are worse picks being championed right now. (like Red - I really wish this dude had a decent path so he could bomb hard) the arguments in here are pretty awful though. just say he's the most popular starter from the 3rd biggest game on the site and leave it at that. different people attach different meanings to that statement. that's a good thing. --- xyzzy |

You do know that Crono still defeated Pikachu in the day. Good to hear! I was tempted to lock-in Crono / Missingno, but Missingno is like the ultimate joke character (I know we said this about Sandbag last year too, but this is different! More people get this joke! and it's a real joke to boot!). If people get any hype to it, there is bound to be rallies. BIG rallies (aka "stuffing"). I'll still pick Crono regardless. red sox 777 | Posted 12/16/2009 7:52:55 AM | message detail |
Hmm....Neku
probably underperformed in that match because there were 3 JRPG
characters against Ganondorf, and Neku was the weakest of them. Plus
the first hour didn't have pictures, and as soon as the pictures were
added Neku skyrocketed while Ganondorf plummeted (not that this is
worth more than a fraction of a percent). --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |

Did Mewtwo need the NRT to get in the first time? I don't recall. Yep, Mewtwo probably got more NRT support than any character we ever had. He had well over 100 pledges the year he won. Also, taking Missingno to beat Crono is probably the most ludicrous upset of all-time because people are making too big of a deal over the fact that it's a day match. If it wouldn't be close for 24 hours, it won't be close for 12 hours. Reducing the match to 12 hours isn't going to turn a tripling into an upset win for Missingno. Just forget it. --- "I can set you free, mate." "My freedom was forfeit long ago!" |
Not_Wylvane | Posted 12/16/2009 8:06:52 AM | message detail |
I'm
still pissed Missingno is wasted against Crono. I think Missingno has
good potential to upset a few midcarders, but if L-Block couldn't beat
Crono in a four-way, what hope does Missingno have? The only thing we
can hope for is Missingno escaping a doubling, and even that has a very
slim chance of happening. There's just so much wasted potential in this bracket. --- Not Wylvane |

Good Matchups - Sonic vs. Lightning: hahahaha, this is classic. Biggest opening round for a 1-seed since Halo/Starcraft. Sonic probably takes it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't... I don't think "classic" is the right word for this. Bull **** would be far more appropriate. I'm surprised more people haven't been raging over her being paired up with him. Of course, I give Lightning a shot against Sonic, so apparently I am insane Hey I'm with you. Sonic hasn't had a decent game since SA2B on the cube. FFXIII is about to be released, and people were up in arms about it not getting a perfect score in Famitsu. The potential for it isn't large, but I'm hoping that this is the biggest blindside upset of the whole contest. --- |

Don't we have the fodder fluctation factor? I'm very skeptical about using raw x-stats for those kinds of characters, so in matches involving both of them like geno/ness and ellis/shephard or neku/laharl i'm more on the fence, those matches could end up being blowouts for all we know because fodder characters are just weird. --- Shakes Fist! |
