if the top seed is an odd number, night match.
if the top seed is an even number, day match.

This should be put in the first post.

At this point the problem with using x-stats is that we only have useless 4-way stats for the past 2 years, and 3-year old 1v1 stats aren't much better than last year's 4-way stats.

I'm surprised more people haven't been raging over her being paired up with him.

Probably because most people don't know/care about her yet from lack of you know... playing her game.

Ha, LinkMarioSamus.....prepare for the return of votal-stats.....which I actually rather like. They were one of the first things this topic focused on back in 2002 when it got started after all, and have always been interesting. You can talk about them without treating them as the ultimate in predictive information.

Just did a quick look at the bop so far, some interesting things

- Nathan is getting very little support. If this was his first contest I think a lot more people would take him.
- Liquid Snake/Altair is very debated in round 1
- Surprised that Ellis has almost no support against Commander Shepard
- Vivi/Liquid/Altair debated in round 2
- Gordon > Tifa seems to be a possible upset
- Sora/Bowser is expected to be good
- Squall/Auron, the most one-sided debated match so far
- Kirby > Sonic is popular despite people taking Sonic over Ganondorf
- Solid Snake > Sephiroth is a popular pick.

Why is Lightning in here anyway? Correct me if I am wrong but I don't recall any character (or game) from past contests ever being in the brackets before their game was released here in NA. Even with the bracket submission and actual match time lag, FFXIII won't still be around by then.

It isn't even a good experiment to see how a character would do based on pure hype alone. They should have stuck someone other than Sonic in here for that (a midtier or slightly lower character would have been a better choice).

- Surprised that Ellis has almost no support against Commander Shepard

In a match between two characters a lot of people on this board are unfamiliar with, they'll just take the much higher seed and run with it. That's what I did anyway.

- Squall/Auron, the most one-sided debated match so far

I'm surprised about this. HaRRicH and Soul are really the only Auron supporters I've seen so far. I was hoping this would be a more split match in order to raise the awesomeness. Still lookin' forward to it one way or the other! I'm hoping it turns out to be Squall/Vincent II. I just wish we had more matches between near elite characters. Really, the only other big matches like this are Sora/Bowser and the Ryu/Dante/Leon trio.

So what does everyone expect from the vote totals this year? Are we thinking early SC2K2 numbers (50-75k)? SC2K4 numbers (80-95k)? Or do we think we'll be able to break 100,000 on a regular basis?

I think if people are aware that there are two matches per day, we might be able to break 100,000 votes, but I dunno. I'm kinda surprised Bacon went this route because I'm sure he's aware that it probably means lower vote totals.

While more people will come to vote again in the second match I don't think the difference will be that much. The first half constantly outvotes the second half.

LeonhartFour | Posted 12/16/2009 9:57:15 AM | message detail
On school days, the ASV is by far the most popular timeframe, with the DSV in second place. Of course, the second night vote usually having worse vote totals than the Power Hour kinda nullifies that, but after 22 hours, just about anyone who's wanted to vote has had the chance to vote. I think we'll have a stronger last two hours of each poll than usual simply because the matches are shorter.

He was mentioned many times in AC2, and you can get his armor and sword (both being the best items in the game I believe).

But that's not why I think he will get a boost. AC2 is so fresh on everybody's minds right now that most of his fans are visiting the site for FAQs/Hints/Reviews/etc. Should be enough to push him over characters with similar strength who have been non-existent for a while (Liquid/Vivi).

Well, I guess taking him over Liquid is all right considering you could argue he was just ballistic, but VIvi has been consistent for a long time. Beat Tidus, close match with Zero, etc. I can't see Altair doing any of that.

I can. I didn't trust him last year because of the backlash against his game by his own fanbase, but AC2 is loved and should have turned things around. Altair's true strength will be shown this year.

Should be enough to push him over characters with similar strength who have been non-existent for a while (Liquid/Vivi).

Failing to beat Duke Nukem doesn't give me confidence that he can beat Liquid and especially not Vivi.

Oh, and almost getting doubled by Zack Fair doesn't help his case either. Liquid did really well on Luigi, who I'd probably take over Zack (It'd be a tossup at best). Vivi got doubled by Snake, but Snake >>> Zack Fair. I just don't see the Altair respect here.

I know he was disappointing last year, but I believe he will get a boost because of the influx of AC fans on the site thanks to AC2.

Maybe Altair can beat Liquid, but I think Vivi's just out of reach, AC2 boost or not. I think Vivi's a really underrated character around here. I mean, he probably beats Pikachu in 2007 if Tidus isn't there.

Do we have a precendent for this kind of poll though, i am sure we'll see shifts in certain patterns, not all obviously, but the matches can't be static and stuck to the trends, i can see certain blocks getting more votes than usual, especially the last few hours of the day matches.

So would you say a Nintendo character, for example, would be slightly stronger in a weekend day match and slightly weaker in a weekend night match. I know it probably won't make much of a difference here, just curious. :)

Also, I'm thinking that the Nintendo backlash will finally hit this site and as a result, the popular single player games on the Xbox 360 will be outright stronger then years past, which means stronger main characters from those games.

Shift from Square -> Nintendo -> Microsoft.

The trends don't determine the outcome. They simply define it. I doubt the day of the week a match is run on really decides anything (unless you're a believer in the Blizzard Tuesday Factor).
