Now then, for an announcement. This one's about the Character Battle. There's good news and there's bad news. I'll start with the bad news. Due to the time of the year and the timing of GameSpot's pretty similar contest, it simply doesn't make sense to do the CB until the beginning of next year (that is, beginning the battles in mid-January). There simply isn't enough time to get a great bracket and run the entire contest without running into all kinds of holidays. We will however start up the preliminary actvities such as character nominations and bracket entries this year, so that's something to look forward to. The good news is that this coming Character Battle will NOT, repeat NOT, be a 4-man format like the last two battles. I know that this will make many people happy and hopefully make it worth the wait. Stay tuned for more details about the new format (one that we haven't used before!) and more about the timing of the battle.

Gordon probably, although we could consider Snake an honorary Western character.

For that matter, we could almost consider Link an honorary Western character considering how much more popular Zelda games are in North America than in Japan.

It's not that surprising. Last gen Western games only really had a presence on the Xbox and PC, now they're on the two most popular gaming systems this gen and constantly coming out.

They are, but if you look at Canada relatively to the US there's a big difference.

Just got back from work, so I just saw the divisions. Meh, what a waste. Snake/Sephiroth may be interesting, but I'd much rather see Snake/Mario, as I think that could be damn close. And then they could have had the winner face Sephiroth, just in case Snake beats Mario and could rival Sephy. Hell, Mario in general is just wasted, dominating his part until going down to Link. Might as well stick Sora with Link and let a bunch of midcarders fight each other for a moral victory while pairing Mario with Sonic for the long awaited Mario/Sonic match, Crono for Mario/Crono 588, or Cloud so Cloud can finally avenge his defeat to the plumber. Or ****ing Snake since the two are juggernauts. I guess Mario/Crono could still happen, but meh.

I'd say Samus is wasted, but honestly besides maybe Snake she can't really compare to everyone, being in her own tier in the middle of the N9. Might as well just have sacrificed her to Link, I guess, wasteful as it may seem. I'd really love to see Sonic get seriously challenged. Put one of the Square elites in the same side of the Division as Sonic, and then put Crono and maybe Ganondorf on the other. Now that sounds fun. Hell, even Sonic/Pikachu may bring some hilarity.

It's hard to get something where everyone isn't wasted, but I think Sora and Sonic's divisions could bring some major upsets and be the major focus of the contest. I'm all for Mario/Snake, and if you really want to see the winner take on Sephiroth, you could always switch Samus with Cloud, killing off Cloud early in favor of a Link/Sephiroth or potentially a Link/Snake final. You'd get a weaker final, but a potentially better semi-final.

Any suggestions for improvements?
