Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 762

This topic wouldn't have 762 parts, that's for sure. --- "Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Always." |

If the stats topic followed that logic stuff like Vincent vs. Dante and World of Warcraft wouldn't happen. I don't understand. The stats topic didn't set up the bracket placement for either of those. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |

If
someone promised a new format and all they did was make it bigger,
you'd be left with a lot of unhappy campers if you were a politician. It's safe to assume it won't be 1v1 128 --- A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice. |

I
was saying that we should avoid getting rid of possible upsets just
because we think they won't happen. Which in this case would be
Mario/Crono. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |

The
other thing is that most of the matches we think will be exciting
aren't, and the really exciting stuff always comes from places we
didn't expect. I mean, part of that is just that unexpected stuff is more exciting, but it also means that if we ever got one of our ideal, stats-topic designed brackets, we could miss out on a lot of good matches and especially good runs. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |

Crono
was still favored 73-23 in the Oracle. There were believers, but most
people still expected Crono to win because Sonic was still Sonic. --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |
red sox 777 | Posted 12/14/2009 5:32:31 PM | message detail |
I
felt very worried about Crono after that Auron match, though he did
well against Bowser (just 2% less than Sephiroth! Why did you have to
be so overrated, Bowser? You're my second favorite Nintendo character
too.) But basically, I think it's clear that most of the really exciting stuff wasn't planned by us but just arose out of the contest itself. You can't force a good contest, you may get lucky or you may not. You can ruin a contest (by flooding it with boring SFF matches a la 2004), but you can't force it to be good. You can't create something like Starcraft or L-Block. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |
red sox 777 | Posted 12/14/2009 5:33:48 PM | message detail |
And
actually, I was worried about Crono before the contest. That matchup
just didn't and doesn't feel right to me. Like even now, I'd feel more
comfortable with Crono against Megaman than Sonic in a rematch, however
bad Sonic looked last year. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |
charmander6000 | Posted 12/14/2009 5:33:51 PM | message detail |
I
wouldn't trust the oracle, Crono was the favourite, but a lot of people
hold on to their brackets even if deep down they don't think he can win. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |
The n00b Avenger | Posted 12/14/2009 5:38:23 PM | message detail |
Uh, even if Crono was the favorite, it was only to win by 51%. You can't say someone expected to win with 51% not winning is unexpected --- A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice. |

He was the favorite before the contest. But in any case, I'm not saying matches we expect to be good can't be good, just that most of them aren't. The best way to keep the contest interesting is to have a wide variety of matches. Keep it organic and avoid set-ups wherever possible. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |
red sox 777 | Posted 12/14/2009 5:47:32 PM | message detail |
Also,
the mentality of this place regarding margins like that was quite
different back then. Remember when we called Tidus/Shadow "obvious"
after the fact? It was supposedly a match that was close but that Tidus
always was guaranteed to win. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |

red sox 777 | Posted 12/14/2009 5:51:46 PM | message detail |
No
match that was as close as that one should be considered obvious. The
fact that it was that close means that there was a chance the other
character would win, since none of us can predict percentages with
anywhere near that kind of precision. --- Link he come to town to dominate all other characters and trample them down with his sword of more votes. |
