Marcus Fenix might be the sole exception, I mean surely he can beat Rydia, right?

With the picture Rydia had, Kefka wouldn't have stood a chance.

But 2007 Fenix was quite obviously stronger than 2008 Fenix. I dunno what happened with Gears of War, but it dropped off the face of the planet in the span of a year. Look at how the game did in the Games Contest, after all.

Maybe it's mean to the other characters, but I kinda hope a Noble Nine member slipped in nominations this year where it would actually be on the line. Not that the poll itself would be a lot more interesting (though I wonder how much one could really win by in a poll like this), but we would all have our upset-crosshairs on whichever member it was.

Shouldn't happen, but it could be fun to see with Mega Man or maybe Crono or Sonic (though people are already waiting to bite on Sonic losing again).

Crono probably gets the least amount of nominations out of the noble nine, but even then I would be surprised if he got below the top 20.

Link is just beastly, and this competition is a lot weaker than the #2-#6, which he faced in the Battle Royale.

Also, I figure if you take out Cid, Aeris gets maybe 20% here. Link would double her with ease, but then, he's getting placed into Emil's spot and not hers.

Link would murder Little Mac's percentage (maybe Tails's too if you consider Sonic Team "close enough" nowadays) and Aeris/Cid are bothering each other a lot like we've seen with Cloud/Sephiroth. Most of the rest of these guys are junk, so considering Link's ~27.5% in Day One of the Battle Royale I'd be very surprised to see him not break 30%.

First replacing Cid will not give Aerith 20%.

Second by the time you hit 12-way you're reaching a point where characters bottom out. Adding Link won't cause Maxwell to drop below 1%. Heck all you have to do is look at characters such as Simon or Tails who are doing well against Aerith/Cid (even if they are LFF each other). There's a base that all characters have and there is only so much Link can take. There's a reason why none of the known characters have done well and it's because there's only so much they can take.

So yeah.

Yes, Link/Mario/Samus and Cloud/Sephiroth/Crono would hold down every other Nintendo/Square character. You would get a lot of the remaining stragglers with Mega Man, Sonic, and Solid Snake. We've seen all of them as mascots of various levels for over a decade. At least one of those characters has been the star of every notable console's top game/s except Microsoft's two systems too, so they'd rock the poll.

I doubt we're getting 128 characters. Looking at PiGuy's list, Ike, Charizard, Red, Zack, Magus, Kefka, Yuna, Tidus and Knuckles are probably all already in, even if there aren't 64 byes. That leaves around 10 others, while we would still have at least 4 more Play-Ins to go if we doing a Tag Team where half the team members are already selected.

Yeah, it was originally Ceej's idea, but Bacon seems to be rather fond of it and keeps running with it. I don't know if Ceej would've stuck with the idea for more than one contest.

CJay did try different things most years. BGE, The List, Series Contest, 2004's SFF-heavy theme, ToC, Female Bracket, Battle Royale...think that's all of them while he was still the main man around. This will be SB's third time with the Character Battle (with a BGE-contest under his belt), so SB's kinda following in CJay's foot-steps.

I don't know what CJayC's role in the 2007 contest was or how much involvement he had in it. He could have come up with the format himself, or merely helped out Bacon with getting a bracket set up (leaving Bacon to decide the format).

Good point. They'd probably underperform in a poll like this, so arguing whether Link'd break 30% is kinda a moot point, especially since the results would probably be different if we were just voting for favorites.

Of course, if it was a legit 12-way with Link replacing Emeril or whoever, I'd pick him to break 30%. He broke 25% on the five other strongest characters on GameFAQs, so why not against 11 scrubs?

I'd love for it to be a 64 character non-tag format, but honestly it's just not happening at this point. Even if this were the last play-in poll and only the 4 winners got in, just look at everyone we'd have to cut based on my latest breakdown:

Just based on that, it's hard to argue for anything besides 2-4 more days of Play-Ins followed by a 128 bracket.

As TRE posted CJayC had the idea planned out, you do know there is a lot of red tape to go through for a prize winning contest and it takes months of preparations and approval.

I doubt it. The way I think of it is that Link also has a floor, and his floor is a lot higher than that of weak characters, to a greater degree than he is normally stronger than them. Link's floor is the percentage of voters who have him as their favorite character.....put every character in existence against him, and he still has a shot of breaking 20%, probably. Maxwell's floor in that sense is almost certainly well 1%, as in less than 1% of the site has him as their favorite character.

Aeris and Cid are doing all right when you consider that the LFF between them is probably massive, and people may not want a lot of FFVII characters in the contest. It's not like Aeris has looked very impressive since 2004.

Maxwell's floor in that sense is almost certainly well 1%, as in less than 1% of the site has him as their favorite character.

0% in the sense of less than 0.01%

Seriously at 140,000 total votes, you'd need 14 voters. I don't see 14 people thinking Maxwell is the best character ever when EVERYONE else is there. No way he comes close to the 1400 needed for 1%.

I can agree about preferring to see twice as many characters now compared to the sixty-four character format; it's been fun learning about lots of new characters and trying to rally personal faves into the contests with better ease. That said, I'm still ultimately an accuracy guy. I'll be okay only seeing an overall-stronger set of sixty-four if it means legitimacy is better ensured.
