GameFAQs Contests

Mario stopped being a series where people cared a lot about the new releases sometime in the 11 year gap between Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy. Now it's a series that provides fun, entertaining, new games, perhaps, and has a huge amount of fame and nostalgia, but most people don't care about the new releases in the way they do about something like FFXIII, MGS4, MW2, etc. The industry has moved beyond platformers.

I wonder if/how much CoD:MW2 is benefiting from a Halo 3-like effect. Halo 2 beat GTA:SA shortly after its release in a poll and we've seen MC in several polls that came out about a month after Halo 3's release. Considering how MW2 shattered records in sales recently in ways Halo wish it could have, I wonder if its lead will shrink much come time for the GotY-polls -- that's still a month and a half away.

Just because they rated it the best dosen't mean that it'll be consensus goty. In 2007, Mario Galaxy was top rated game yet most places went Modern Warfare. And last year, GTA4 was top rated game and most places split between MGS4/Fallout 3.

Point made on the first one, but GTA4 should have never been rated that high in the first place. A week after GTA4 came out, it was pretty clear it wasn't going to win any major GOTY awards.

AC2 has already surpassed Mario just an hour in... it took till the deep night on that "Most anticipated November game of November" poll for AC2 to pass it. Was NSMBWii considered a disappointment or something?

quite the opposite actually -- Assassin's Creed 2 is better than people expected. Mario always has a strong first hour and then utterly dies, and with competition like this it's bound to do even better.

ya know I can't say I wasn't surprised to see MW2 not get 10 from Gamespot.
I thought for sure that site would do so after it was lenient on GTA4 and still gave 10 to MGS4 which is an 11 for MGS fans, but not exactly the most accessible game for the uninitiated.
I really do wonder if MW2 hasn't fallen in the same trap as Halo3 and just way overhyped itself.
Brawl this site hyped up itself by comparison.

If I remember the topic from NeoGAF, last year was between GTA4 and Fallout 3 in terms of total GotY awards. Don't remember which won out overall, but MGS4 wasn't too close to the mix. I can probably check Wikipedia in a few minutes.

I don't see Modern Warfare 2 being beaten this year, mostly due to the lack of competition. Put it in 2008 and while it'd still be a favorite, it wouldn't be as huge. That said, considering Activision's attitude and huge backlash to the PC version, I'd be a bit skeptical on MW3 doing as well here in 2011.

Still, not having an Nintendo or Square game win GotY doesn't happen very often (the only previous winners were RE4 and GTA:SA, right?) and it's nice to see the site broaden its tastes, even though I wish they did it more last year so that Fallout 3 would've won GotY.

I believe Fallout 3 and GTA4 were top dogs for GOTY. it's not like it matters, there's eight billion sites giving out GOTY awards.

this year will probably be Uncharted 2 > MW2 > Arkham Asylum > SF4. SF4 would have a better chance if it were released in November instead of February.

What the junk SB? I mean sure this is an interesting poll, but did he forget how we're going to be sitting through 15 straight days of voting on these games in only a month?

...unless this is a signal that he's looking to shorten the GotYs this year in order to get the character bracket rolling a little sooner. Somehow I doubt that though; it makes too much sense.

I don't know, it'd seem cheap to skip all the console GotY's, trivial as they are this year.

Of course, if he skips them, I won't shed any tears about it. Only debatable one is, what, DS with Platinum VS Spirit Tracks?

at least we know uncharted 2 isn't likely to be a major threat on this site, MW2... will that be the first game since San andreas to not be from either nintendo or square, wait square only has FFX doesn't it....and people STILL moan about FF.

But each big release like halo or GTA IV seemed to have gotten very positive buzz about a week into their release, can MW2 keep that love going?
At this stage I'm hoping Resident Evil 5 and Arkham Asylum prove to be better opposition than Assassin's Creed 2 and Uncharted 2, heck should Batman win it all it's square back on track...technically.

With another month and a half for the MW2-hype to die down, maybe RE5 or Batman:AA can get closer than Dragon Age currently is...or maybe NSMBW will pick up some steam. Either way, MW2's got this year's GotY here.

It's not going to mean anything for GameFAQs-strength and it's a site most/all of us never heard of before this, so what-ev. I'll follow it though just 'cuz I enjoy this sort of thing.

I've heard that that list is sorted so all the people who are currently playing appear first so it misrepresents how many people are actually playing MW2. Those 19 shown may have been the only ones in the 833 to be currently playing the game, although I expect there were also others who weren't shown or bought the game but were not currently playing it.

Haha, yeah, it would have been nice if it was just a GameFAQs-thing that it bombed in BGE2. It's so weird that it won so many awards and GotY's while praised as the true SM64-sequel, yet I've not seen anything redeeming for it since SSBB came out. Heck, it sold well too, that alone would put it over the likes of SotC in a lot of places!

SMG's fall from grace is just weird to me. I get Mario thrives on nostalgia, but SMG made a fantastic return and now apparently has to wait until the time when gamers go "Hey, remember SMG?" to have some strength.

Yeah, nearly all the old Mario-games were huge. I think another thing that compliments that is SMB1, SMW, and SM64 were launch-games...we haven't seen a Mario-title with that initial push since then (besides SM64DS, but that's a port for a handheld). Launching helped LoZ:TP and SSBM (it was two weeks off, close enough), so I figure that could play a part.

A Nintendo-launch just doesn't feel the same with Mario though -- heck, it was the main reason people were flocking to Luigi's Mansion before SSBM hit!
