Hmm...looking back at 2k8, there's something that makes me wonder.

Does anybody remember the Tidus/DK/Cube/Tails match? Back then, it was considered a total flop from DK because he lost cleanly to Tidus. However, when I look at it again, Tails is there sucking up votes, and by then it was pretty much accepted that Team Sonic was not immune to Nintendo SFF, so why couldn't DK's disastrous job be attributed to LFF? Wasn't that considered?

It's tough to say until FF13 is actually out and we see what the characters are like, but there's no real reason that FF13's cast won't be as strong, or stronger, than FF10's. FF10's group isn't a big hurdle to overcome, save for Auron.

You could have said much the same thing about FFXII.

Before the protests about XIII being completely different, do take a look at these:

That's about 58% for buying XII and 56% for XIII, including the "probably" but not the "maybe" for XIII and not including the "not sure" for XII. Looks about the same. The cast actually has to prove worthwhile before we give them FFX strength.

Yeah, I figured someone would bring up FF12. Needless to say, FF13 is about as far from that as possible, characters and gameplay alike.

FF12's problem is that the characters are kind of the second or third focus instead of the first, which is how FF7-10 are.

FF13 probably fixes that. haven't played it yet, but I'd be surprised if they went down FF12's path, especially with how colourful all the characters look. FF12 was generic zone.

I don't seem to recall people calling Balthier generic when arguing about him in 2007. Heck, I don't remember any arguments about Balthier at all in 2007, considering his competition was Ada Wong.

I will say that we have seen what happens when people are playing a game during a match (Mario/Cloud), but I expect this contest to be winding down by March anyway.

This really makes you wonder if things'll work out for Lightning. After all, she's engineered to draw in the fans of the classic 3D trilogy, but we haven't seen he unique appeal yet. What if she ends up like, say, Ganondorf, a mega-leech that is strong when not up against someone from her own series? It's an interesting prospect.

Tidus was a few thousand shy of beating DK and Tails combined, but I do see your point. But I imagine that any overlap Tails has with Nintendo is infinitely smaller since his track record is piss poor.

I think FFXIII will be better than FFXII by a good bit. It's going back to all of the things people love about the most popular ones (FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX), and it's going to be the first one of the PS3 generation, which I think counts for something.

FF13 will sell better on the PS3 everywhere, but no need for console wars. It's coming to both, which means it's hitting the widest possible audience it can for these contests.

JRPGs or WRPGs?

Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and now it looks like Borderlands and Dragon Age are the top RPGs for the 360. This generation has been piss-poor for JRPGs, though. Unless you count the PS2 and DS, which have been fantastic.

Lost Odyssey is the top selling jrpg of this gen though, at 460k in america. PS3 hasn't had any big jrpg exclusives, and the jrpgs on both systems have sold better on 360, but thats unfair to consider since they also came out on 360 first.

I'd think Fallout 3 or Oblivion would be the best-selling RPGs for 360, both of which are pretty decent on GameFAQs.

FF13 won't touch FF10 contest-wise because the Final Fantasy name has been pretty much dead for ten years. I don't think anyone should expect Lightning to challenge Auron unless FF13 starts a big resurgence in the popularity of RPGs.

Well even if it did, it doesn't really change anything as far as contests go. Popularity/importance =/= sales.

Oh it didnt do as well, but it still did great. FFX did 8 mil, and FFXII did 6 mil, and you need to consider that it came out after the next gen already started, and games always have lower overall sales if its competing with a next gen system

And it should be noted that FFXII still sold better than FFIX (which also suffered from competing with next gen systems), so I wouldn't say the FF brand name is going down.

Asking any FF13 character to challenge Auron is too much right now, but the cast being able to hang with the FF10 crew if the game does well isn't a tall order. It's not like Yuna and Tidus are the top tier.

If it turns out they can't, Final Fantasy will be about done as far as new characters or games go.

Eh, I can see Lightning and maybe another character or two be around Tidus or Yuna-level at max. Still don't think FF13 characters will be very strong, but I doubt they'll be Balthier-weak either.

As for the game itself, I'd guess between FF6 and FF8.

Remember that experiment I tried out during round 2 last summer where I tried to make reasonable stats based on votals? My theory was that stronger games do tend to draw more votes, but there is a base amount of votes any 4 games will draw. So, I subtracted 95,000 from the match votals, and divided the remaining votes among the games in the match according to their percentage. For example, if FFVII had 40% in a match with 130,000 votes, then it was credited with 14,000 votes for that match. Then the resulting stats were converted into our typical x-stat format by simply finding the game with the highest number of votes, and pretending that game and any other game were in a match where they got the number of votes credited to them.

While the results then were not good enough to be of any use to us, they were surprisingly good compared to what I expected votal-stats would be, about as good x-stats derived from 4-ways. At that time I only had the first round data, but now I've added the data for the entire 2009 Best Game Ever contest. For games that appeared in more than 1 match I simply averaged the number of votes credited to them.
