Well yeah, MGS should have beaten RBY with just OOT in there. Take out OOT and FFVIII though, and RBY wins by a good deal more than it won by in the contest.

No, I'm saying that, had FF8 not laid a huge log in MGS' path, MGS would have defeated a SFFed RBY rather easily instead of losing narrowly to it.

I thought we agreed MGS and FF8 probably didn't bother each other. Solid/Squall #2 and #3 looked fine in the grand scheme of things, Solid/Squall #1 was Squall's only match pre-KH (as a 15-seed!) so we can't fairly say if there was SFF there or not, and the main cases of MGS/FF-SFF are because of FF7 (Seph killed Liquid, FF7 killed MGS). It's not like we're blaming SFF for how FFX smacked MGS2 around this year, or how MGS turned a once-even match against FFT into a blow-out, or probably other examples without FF7 involved. I haven't heard anything about FFX/MGS4 suffering from LFF in their semi-final, either (though that example features different consoles).

I get that MGS is pretty close to RBY in that match (it's a 52-48 match with FF8 and LoZ:OoT), but we just haven't seen a lot suggesting that kind of overlap as damaging. Even if the overlap hurt MGS, having a big-name RPG from the FF-series probably didn't do RBY any favors either. I think RBY would have beaten MGS in that match with or without FF8.

Well, MGS3 and RE4 did appear to hurt each other, as well as MGS4 and Fallout 3. FFVII/MGS has always looked like SFF, although it's possible that it wasn't and CT/SSBM's overperformances were absolutely huge. There's been no direct evidence for MGS/FFVIII overlap, but at this point I'd generally assume some overlap to exist when there is an obvious reason for it to. (Both are major, story-driven, games on the PS1).

And speaking of MGS3, it probably belongs on my top 20 list right with RE4 and the KH games, knocking FFVI out.

I believe in FF7/MGS SFF because I trust FF7 to take any PS1-game down a notch in the same way LoZ:OoT can kick any N64-game's ass unreasonably bad. No other consoles have a single game so clearly ahead of the rest of the console's library except maybe RBY on the Game Boy, and I'd like to see RBY go against some handheld games like LoZ:LA just to test that (though we already saw RBY beat a color-version of itself).

He was in RE4 for like 30 seconds in the original in Assignment Ada and like 5 minutes once Separate Ways came out so if you just played the main game you'd never even see him. RE5 had him as the major villain and boss fight. I can't see how you can in any way call his roles between those two games comparable in the slightes--

Nope, I can think of a couple examples of characters who show up for five seconds and still boosted from hyped games. Wesker didn't, ergo he's only worthy of a nom once all the stronger characters are in the clear.

Liquid boosting from MGS4 is the first one. Heck, he doesn't even show up and yet he inexplicably increased in strength while Ocelot didn't due to his name getting thrown around.

Well there's the whole part about everyone thinking Ocelot was Liquid and thus calling him Liquid throughout the entire game until the very last fight where it's revealed that he's not really Liquid so that doesn't really count. I think Liquid boosted more than Ocelot even, and that's entirely why.
