he could do the dreaded 2 matches in one day system, but nobody wants that.

Well, unless he's got some mind-blowingly awesome idea that we've never thought of before, then chances are we're still gonna be displeased, no matter what format he comes up with. I'll give it a fair shot even if it's tag teams because we've never seen it before, and a one-time gimmick can be a nice change of pace because of unpredictability and not knowing what to expect. I wouldn't want to see it more than one time though, and hopefully we won't.

Okay, added a section about all the Guru choices and how they turned out.

Guru Nomination Choices

Starting with the 2006 BSE Contest, a stipulation was added to Guru signups saying that everyone who enters the competition is required to save one nominate for the next season's bracket, to be spent on an entrant of the Guru winner's choice. Here is a listing of what entrants were backed by the Gurus, and how they fared.

* Characters 2006 - Toadette, as chosen by Z1mZum
o After CJay limited the bracket to only 32 male characters, Z1m picked an obscure girl in the hopes of sneaking her into one of the 32 slots on the Female side of the bracket, but Toadette ended up just missing the cut.
* Characters 2007 - Wario, as chosen by Rufus Shinra
o Massive support made Wario the 4th most-nommed Character on Board 8 and earned him a respectable #6 seed (out of 16) in the 128 character bracket. Wario survived past Captain Falcon and Banjo before getting his face handed to him by Fox and Sephiroth in Round Two.
* Characters 2008 - Altair, as chosen by Explicit Content
o EC regretted this choice, as he made it before the release of Assassin's Creed, a game that ended up badly disappointing him. Nevertheless the rally was a huge success: Altair was the #1 most-nommed character on B8, earned a very impressive #2 seed in the bracket, and pulled off nice upsets over Lucario and Marth to earn a spot in Round Three.
* Games 2009 - Super Mario World: Yoshi's Island, as chosen by FastFalcon
o Despite some initial grumbling (there was hesitation about putting another Mario title into what was expected to be only a 64 game bracket), everyone supported YI, making it one of B8's top picks for the season. SMW2 made it into the bracket as a #10 seed, but was embarrassed in R1 by Chrono Trigger before being dealt one of the bloodiest SFF beatdowns ever in R2 by Super Mario World.
* Characters 2009 - Prinny, as chosen by KrahenProphet
o We'll just SEE about that...

I didn't think LoZ, Sonic 2, SSBM, Halo 2, or FO3 were that impressive. LoZ lost fairly to SMB with two other platformers in the poll, lost again in a rematch, and only really looked good losing because it was facing three Mario-games. Sonic 2 did as expected -- I think it was the original Sonic that impressed us the most. Honestly, I was kinda disappointed in SSBM -- it let SSBB look better against SFF from LoZ:OoT (and I don't think you can completely blame RBY for that) and I wasn't too pleased with the margin of victory it had over FFX with KH (and D2 for another RPG if you wanna stretch it) in the poll. Halo 2 had to come from behind against Okami and never really made a match with WoW. FO3 fell pretty short of its GotY-performance last year, though it at least won the matches it was expected to take.

Sonic. Charizard's gonna need to match Pikachu before I can give that a good chance. Pikachu got 46.42% on Crono and Auron got 46.15% on Auron last year, and -- considering how close Crono, Vincent, and Auron have been in recent years -- Pikachu and Sonic were probably nearly equal. Mewtwo fell pretty shy of Pikachu, so Charizard's got some proving to do before I give him a shot against a Noble Niner.

Auron got 46.15% on Auron last year

Oh really

Seriously, I don't think Charizard gets anywhere near Sonic. I can't see him being a near elite. Honestly, in my opinion, the reason Pikachu is as strong as he seems to be is because of Smash Bros. Yeah, I know Mewtwo and Charizard are in them, but they're not one of the originals and they've only been in one apiece. Plus, they were both pretty weak characters.

And honestly, if you're willing to give Charizard a shot at beating Sonic, then at the very least, you're saying Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, Pikachu, Zelda, Ganondorf, and Kirby beat him easily because I ain't takin' Charizard over any of those guys.

Speaking of Luigi, Sonic beat him with 60% back in 2006. Who do you take now?

Uh, Sonic beats Charizard with complete and utter ease. (Yes, over 60%!) For one thing, Pikachu is probably a good deal above Charizard; for another, Pikachu has never shown himself in any other match to be nearly as strong as his performance in the L-Block Slaying Match.

I haven't heard any anti-vote talk for Mewtwo until now. It's common tendency to overhype the NRT-winner, and Charizard's no exception. There's no reason why he cannot outdo Mewtwo, but we don't know for sure if he will or not and I don't think it'll be a blow-out if he does.

I can see Charizard and Tidus having a pretty solid match, which is nicely between Pika and Mewtwo. He was the face of Pokemon Red (plus I think Charmander was a starting Pokemon for RBY), he's playable in SSBB (but isn't that good), and he still at least had a presence in the SSB-series from the beginning as a Pokeball-power. Mewtwo was a really secret/hard character to get in RBY, playable in SSBM (but sucked), and had no other presence in the SSB-series. Looking at it like that, Mewtwo has to really rely on being the sought-after bad-ass in RBY to outdo Charizard.

That said, I don't know anything about the TV-show or movies except that I think Mewtwo was the star of one movie. Is there any reason for them to sway a Charizard/Mewtwo-comparison?

The overall winner has always made the field. The characters who've missed the field despite getting NRT support are Nightmare (2006), Raiden (2006 Returners winner), Seifer (2007), and Diddy Kong (2007).

Zack'll be interesting this year. I want to see him face some legit FF-competition. Put him against Cid Highwind or Yuna and I think it'll be very interesting to see how loyal his fans are. I think he's a bit stronger than those two indirectly, but respectable FF-competition like them should really see if people support him more for CC:FF7 or his FF7-appearance.

I know Bacon doesn't like the idea, but what's so bad about a OMAD 128 entrant contest one per year, alternating between games and characters? 4-ways and gimmicky stuff needs to go away.

Seeing Seifer's company here just makes it harder and harder to really support seeing him in a contest. Yeesh...it's a shame FF8's tried so hard and had so many good opportunities to get a second character represented yet can't.

The strange thing is that all of those except Seifer made it into the contest the year after, and Raiden and Nightmare won NRT support again in 2007 despite their failure to make the field in 2006 (though the female bracket was blamed for their failure to make it that year). Diddy had the benefit of Brawl last year to help him out though.

Yeah, when I ran the NRT last year for BGE2, I only had three winners: RBY, SF64, and DKC2 (respectively). There was no need for five because we only had one BGE before and it was really a gamble that we were gonna have another BGE next anyway.

RBY really paid off though, gotta give it that. That's bound to be the strongest NRT-contestant we've had to date.
