Is there not a popular video game site on the internet dedicated to sports games? For as popular a genre as it is and for how dissed the games are on most general-gaming sites like GameFAQs, it would seem like there could be a semi-popular place for sport-gamers to gather around.

Anyway, yeah, at most game-sites you will see most sport-games be destroyed. I imagine Mario Tennis/Golf/Strikers/Baseball beats any "true" tennis/golf/soccer/baseball game at most places, and I wouldn't be surprised if NBA Jam and NFL Blitz/Tecmo Super Bowl could hold their own against major basketball/football games too. Internet-nerds and gamers are both stereotyped to not be athletic while you almost have to be some degree of both to come to GameFAQs/GameSpot/IGN/etc., so seeing the embarrassment that most "true" sports games suffer in internet polls isn't too surprising. Throw in that "real" gamers complain about how the sports games are often just rehashes of the game released the year before while the "casual" gamers eat them up every year, and that ensures some hatred toward the genre that's already not very supported.

You won't see sports-games ever do very well across all major gaming websites, and it'll have to be pretty legendary for it to be widely respected by just one of the major sites.

I for one would love to see Shadow Hearts vs Madden.

And now this brings to mind a question. What would be the strongest sports game on GameFAQs? Punch-Out!! most likely?

Wii Sports would be a legitimate contender in that category, if not the favorite. Most Mario sports-games would make an impact. Punch-Out!! would probably fair well, though I'd fear it crumbling to anything named Mario if it could lose to the original Donkey Kong. WWF No Mercy could be a fun wildcard if professional wrestling counts, though I bet it's been too long for it to matter nowadays. If you consider hunting to be a sport, Duck Hunt could make a decent appearance too. I'd like to think NBA Jam could do well, though it could flop in even this context. Competitive dancing could be argued as a sport, which would bring Dance Dance Revolution into the mix. TSB is just too old to compete, really; it's done poorly in at least two polls where it had a chance not to embarrass itself. I'd like to see an individual Madden game compete instead of the series -- I don't know if an individual game would carry the same amount of disdain that the series would since a largely believed reason of why sports-games are hated are that they barely improve on the year before...though it still wouldn't win the category.

Here's a poll that's almost ten years old, so it will surely help us answer these questions and more:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=58

With auto racing mentioned, Gran Turismo would be in the mix too...though it would be a stinker.

I believe the setup for this contest will work like this:

1. Announce nominations near the end of this month or in early December.
2. Reveal the bracket within a few days prior to the Christmas vacation.
3. Allow users to fill out their brackets during the Christmas vacation and during early January while the system and GotY polls are being run.
4. Start up the contest as soon as possible after the GotY polls are over with.

Let's see.

Round 1

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
4) Street Fighter IV (Tough one)

6) Dragon Age: Origins
2) Metroid Prime Trilogy (Another tough one, actually)

1) Halo ODST
4) Assassin’s Creed II (Nobody cares about DS Zeldas)

6) Punch-Out!!
7) Wii Sports Resorts (I have no faith whatsoever in Killzone)

1) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
5) Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (Doesn't feel right but I can't see Halo Wars having any strength at all)

3) Dissidia: Final Fantasy
2) Pokemon Platinum

1) New Super Mario Bros. Wii
5) Tekken 6 (I think Tekken may have a bit of strength here, actually)

3) Resident Evil 5
2) Batman: Arkham Asylum

Round 2

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
6) Dragon Age: Origins (Don't think MPT would be that strong)

4) Assassin’s Creed II
6) Punch-Out!!

1) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
2) Pokemon Platinum (Final Fantasy can't overcome being on the PSP)

1) New Super Mario Bros. Wii
2) Batman: Arkham Asylum (Better received than RE5, so I think it'd fare better)

Round 3

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
4) Assassin’s Creed II

1) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
2) Batman: Arkham Asylum (Yeah, I think it could take on Mario)

Round 4

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
2) Batman: Arkham Asylum (Definitely the toughest match to judge, could go either way)

Final:

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Bayonetta (both versions combined) sold 200K in its first week in Japan. Looks like it should easily sell over a million worldwide.

Think we can get some traction with a nomination rally? Her game releases here January 5, which will be at least a few weeks before any contest begins.

Depends on who's the coolest in-game. GameFAQs users love their badasses, as it's always the badasses that do best from FF games.

I hope it's Afro-guy myself. I think the only black guy who ever did any damage was Shadow.

Now I want to see Shadow the Hedgehog VS FF6 Shadow. If Zidane could kick the hedgehog's poser ass, why couldn't a ****ing beloved ninja from a slightly stronger game?

Shadow is probably weaker than locke and terra sadly, otherwise he'd have made it by now.
we've exhausted just about every old powerhouse and X was the last near noble niner and that's only because he couldn't get in on a technicality.
I don' have hopes for Sazh just because Barret who had a huge amount of screentime in FFVII the 2nd biggest game on this site couldn't make it in.
I'm now wondering if Snow will pull an Auron, it's possible cos Lightning's a girl but I hope not.

Shadow would be nowhere near beating Terra. People won't pick a random ninja unless he's going against weak competition.

FFVI rankings IMO

Kefka
Terra
Locke
Celes
Edgar
Shadow
Mog
Sabin
Cyan
Setzer
Ultros
Relm
Gau
Strago
Gogo
Umaro

Not 100% sure on Mog because of the moogle factor

Here's a very old poll that can only be taken semi-seriously nowadays:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=847

It's a shame we never saw any of the top four characters in this poll (Shadow, Sabin, Locke, Mog) in a contest. There has to be at least one stronger character than Terra from those four. According to that poll, Terra gets 29.82% on Shadow. You can compare that to other character-polls...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=845
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3395
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3420

...Vincent got 37.06% on Cloud, Jill got 36.22% on Leon, and Ken get 29.95% on Ryu...and all three examples feature clear differences in contest-strength (though those percentages aren't necessarily accurate to their strengths in the contests). Terra's got four characters ahead of her and a bigger gap between her and first place than any of those second-place characters have with their first-place competition.

Not that Shadow/Sabin/Locke/Mog are going to be powerhouses or anything -- especially nowadays -- and I don't think they'd pass Kefka very easily, but if that poll means anything then they would have fared better than Terra/Celes and at least one of them deserved a chance.

Deserved...probably not now, but once upon a time.

I honestly wouldn't trust a pre poll 2000 poll anymore though.
votals are just waaaay too low a sample for use to use even for educated guesses imo, FFVI is just begging for a major remake rather than a mere possible DS remake.

If Altair became the main character of the franchise instead of having different main characters ever game, I wouldn't say reaching Dante some day would be impossible. Dante has no where to go but down after the lackluster reception of DMC, plus he is being less focused on in the series now, and Altair had nowhere to go but up especially with AC2 looking to be a massive improvement over AC1.

Dante's not going anywhere, and Altair isn't going to catch up to Dante any time in the foreseeable future. What strength Altair does have isn't even because people like his game - by and large, it got a mixed reaction, which is why AC2 has next to zero hype - it's because of his design. Bayonetta has the same thing going for her that Dante, Hayabusa, and Altair all have going for them - and it's not their great sales figures or the masses loving their games.

that has what to do with this? We've already seen that Altair is stronger then any GTA character based on one game that actually was considered a disappointment. He had ALOT of room to grow if they stuck with him as the main character of the series

Niko also isnt a very good character design. Sales + great character design can do wonders. Bayonetta I'm projecting under 500k sales in america, so she'll have to live on character design alone

In that case why is wesker so weak?
The RE franchise is big in the industry, the gamers know about him, his design screams cool, and hje flops hard, had he faced virgil; in the villains contest, I'd have been tempted to side with the DMC villain.
