Depends on how well-received AC2 is, I guess.

Then again, AC's reception was mixed at best and Altair still ended up impressing (that or Lucario makes Nidoran F look like a powerhouse), so who knows?

Well last year Altair was the guru pick though I think he would have made it regardless. The guy may have a chance if the field is 128 characters, but if we drop to 64 I doubt it.

Yeah, plus Sephiroth already smashed Vincent and Crono was waylaid by Cloud after he beat Vincent. If you want to see a SFF-murder, don't set up Cloud/Vincent -- set up Sephiroth/Aeris.

I don't think you can make Cloud lose to Sephiroth, but this would be my best bet if we're gonna try:

Cloud Strife
Sephiroth
Tifa Lockheart
Zack Fair

I could see people joke-voting to support Aeris if she's in a match against Sephiroth, and Vincent feels similar to Sephiroth in style. Tifa's a cheery power-house who doesn't have much to do with Seph, and Zack is a black-haired Cloud! They've both strong enough to matter too, unlike Zolomy. If Sephiroth can't beat Cloud under that circumstance, Sephiroth can't beat Cloud.

Cloud killed Sephiroth last year because the real match was Solid/Cloud...but I can't help but think the gap between Cloud and Seph is increasing, even as FF7 fades away more and Cloud/Seph impress just a bit less each year. It wouldn't be close one-on-one, but it wouldn't be anything like last year either...I don't know what to say for percentages though.

I'll say Fact. Zack's game is a PSP game. Sure, it's the PSP game as far as GameFAQs is concerned, but it's still a PSP game. Plus he's a bit player in FF7 itself. He still manages to have some strength from just that, but he's not even nearly as distinct from Cloud as Ganon is. Plus, even with SFF, wouldn't Zack doing better on Cloud than the Dorf on Link imply that Zack > Ganondorf? I definitely wouldn't take Zack over Ganondorf.

Zack is one of my favorite FF protagonists and Cloud is pretty close to the bottom, he's certainly got my vote!

I think he'd get Ganondorf'd, though, or at least Raiden'd. Remember that Cloud held Squall to 23% or so way back when, and Squall's a hell of a lot more distinct from Cloud than Zack and is more popular to boot.

I've also gotta go with fiction. Getting his own game got him nominated and it -- coupled with his FF7-appearance -- let him match Aeris against Link multiple times and destroy two other FF-characters already (albeit insignificant ones contest-wise). I've been big on him faltering to other FF7-characters, but it's hard for me to believe even Cloud can kill him that badly. The Midgar Zolom was brought up too, though I imagine it wouldn't have been worth 8% on Cloud one-on-one like it was in the four-way...hard to say. Regardless, Zack wouldn't be close to what Zolomy would get.

There's also the old FF7-poll from 2002 about who your favorite character is...

...if we still give it much credit (remember it doesn't consider the KH-series, FF:AC, or pretty much any FF7-spinoff besides Ehrgeiz...plus it's old and has multiple options, yada yada yada), Cloud would have to beat Zack worse than he beat Barret in that poll to match Link/Ganon (12.21% to 12.1%, respectively). I'll give Zack more credit than that against Cloud.


Then again, Vincent only got 23.83% on Sephiroth, and he had his own game too...if Cloud > Seph, Vincent > Zack, and Zack's relationship with Cloud puts him truly at a handicap against Cloud...I mean, after seeing what Cloud's already done to Squall and Sora, maybe it could get real ugly. I just can't see it get THAT ugly.

Well, looking at it more closely, that poll suggests Vincent would get 36.96% on Cloud...yet despite getting his own game afterward, he got 23.83% against Sephiroth five years later. That could be a sign that pretty much any FF7-character would get smashed considerably worse by Cloud in a match than that poll, though we don't have many other examples to go by.

THEN AGAIN, Tifa got 37.63% against Sephiroth last year in R1, though that number gets questioned by her R2-performance of getting 32.57% on Seph...


...and I just now noticed Tifa easily outdid Vincent twice. Whoa.

Anyway, it's really hard to tell how much worse Cloud would kill Zack than your average FF7-SFF match because we haven't had many of them. I think it's safe to say Zack would easily go under 20%, and I think he'd probably go under 15% without much of a fight...but getting below 12.1% would be a feat.

I think Zack would do noticeably better than Ganondorf. A very, very tiny percent of voters prefer Ganon to Link; I think Zack has many more supporters relative to his universe's biggest character. Also, Cloud's anti-votes could hurt him when going for a sky high percentage.

I found Yoshimitsu to be a really strange choice for support. Jin Kazama already proved himself to be pretty damn weak five long years ago.

Jin's an entrant who did decently for nobody knowing him and being from Tekken. Yoshimitsu is a rather representative character of SC, along with being in Tekken IIRC. At this point, we're so desperate for new blood that the possibility of a character with Nightmare-like strength that's not from Ninty or Square is worthing latching on to.
