i wonder, will the gamespot contest cause huge shifts in the bracketmaking or will B8 stick to 7 years worth of pure hard data?

Gordon might get a casual boost. The rest probably won't be affected.

Yeah, Gordon's the only possibility to get a boost (besides Bub if he ever makes a contest-return.....). Otherwise, giving too much credit to other site's contests will bring us back to the days of "Well CT beat FF7 in GameSpy's contest!"

That should help him out, yeah...I don't know how much though. I don't know how anticipated that game is or how good he'll be in it, but anything's better than letting another year go by with nothing noteworthy. It would make a Hayabusa/Zero rematch interesting again, at least.

Well, the Gamespot Contest is finally over, and go figure that Gordon Freeman, the guy who can never catch a break here, won it over on Gamespot. Kudos for a well-deserved victory.

I still find it funny that Freeman's only true win was against Phoenix Wright, yet he had no problems defeating Duke or Scorpion when the match wasn't for first place.

I don't think Gamespot or this sale will help any. Freeman's come a long way from his 2002 self, but I don't think he'll be too different from his 2008 self. Well, unless Steam starts caring about GameFAQs contests and advertises his matches, but even then that may not be enough if he's against, say, Link and Snake.

Yeah, Breen's the main guy who's oppressing everyone in HL2 and is against you. Adrian Shepard is the guy you play as in HL: Opposing Force. I'm not familiar with him or the other episodes, but a playable character amongst the other three may shake things up.

And if Steam rallied for Gordon like they did at GameSpot, then it's hard to imagine Gordon ever being eliminated in any four-way match or losing to too many people one-on-one. I really don't think Steam will be that interested though; they already won GameSpot's contest and they've never felt compelled to help Gordon out here yet, so I don't see why rallying attempts would be a particularly higher priority for them now. Besides, they helped Gordon out in close situations against Snake, Link, and Mario from the Sweet Sixteen onward. Gordon's only made the third round once here, and his close matches include Duke Nukem, Ike, and a SFF'd Ganon...so there's a difference.

What's being suggested is that Gordon may have new fans for the next contest. He pulled big upsets to win the championship on CNET's bigger gaming site while GameFAQs constantly linked to the contest (GameSpot News Headline, below the results of every PotD, top-page links for close matches and Gordon's victory, Ask GameFAQs, sticky on Board 8, maybe more...?), so there are probably a lot of gamers here who noticed as well as many others off of GameFAQs. Now every game with Gordon is more than half off because of his victory, bringing more attention to him and his series by inviting newcomers to see why he rocks; I'm interested to see what the sales are like while this discount's going on.

I wouldn't count on some huge Gordon boost or anything, but I think the Gordon we'll see early next year will still be stronger than the Gordon of 2008.

Tag team is the only one I can think of without getting too complicated.

Also assuming stream doesn't get involved I don't see Freeman jumping in strength, but I do think people will underrate his 2k8 performance. 38% and 36% against Vincent between rounds 2 and 3 is no joke, that's upper mid-carder level.

Yeah, Gordon looked nice last year outside of the first round, which was probably Big Daddy's fault in hindsight. Heck, judging by how badly he beat Scorpion without another FPS-character in there, he might have beaten Sub-Zero in 2007 if it wasn't for Duke Nukem; the Orange Box came out between the first and second round for him and he blew away Duke in R2, afterall. It's hard to say, but the point is that Gordon's been looking pretty good.

You're probably right red sox, though this isn't 2007 for MC anymore -- that four-way favoritism for him isn't like we once thought it was. I think a Gordon/MC-match would be real cool to see for the next contest, actually.

MMX nearly beat Mario with just Luigi in the poll, so adding Yoshi too should allow somebody weaker than Crono to beat him. Zack Fair may have beaten Mario under those circumstances...which is worse for Mario: having Yoshi/Luigi or Link/MMX to contend with?

You'd think Link would weaken him more because he's got the Nintendo overlap and will be sapping more total % than Luigi and Yoshi combined, but the latter two will give the match an Outsider vs. Mario Orgy feel, which should buff up the outsider.

You know better then anyone that 4ways =/= 1v1. I'd except Chrono Trigger to be stronger in 4ways, but I have a tough time seeing Crono these days being able to get the 50% needed to down a FF7 character.

I disagree, there's a reason why Mario did better against MMX when Luigi was in the poll than when Zelda was in it.

Yeah, I'll grant you that Crono would look worse one-on-one. I would take Vincent and probably Tifa over him in that scenario...but I don't know about Zack. He's still a tier below them, and -- though we saw him kill Zidane and Cecil -- I'm not sold he holds up against Square-classics yet. Not that we've seen much FF7/CT-SFF, but I wouldn't want to favor Zack in a battle against Crono either.
