GameFAQs Contests

Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 755

What an excellent comparison; let's start this doomed hype train immediately. Honestly, I have my doubts about Sheik being at Zelda/Gdorf's level, but I bet she has enough pop to advance a few rounds. That's good enough for me, fanboyism and nostalgia aside.

I'm actually somewhat confident Bacon would let her in. He brought in X and let us have our fill of joke characters that CJayC wouldn't consider in a million years.

Sheik would be nice to see in a contest...and she would bring up the interesting possibility of rSFF if she ever faced Zelda. Sheik is bad-ass in LoZ:OoT and is the better side of the two in the SSB-series, so I wonder if something crazy could happen there.

Wouldn't wanna count on that, but Sheik would do fine in a contest. I imagine she'd be a bit below Zelda.

I generally agree, but I wouldn't be surprised either way. Vincent's strength coupled with the realization that OoT is top dog around here now makes me think Sheik has big upside. I wonder why we all forgot to toss Sheik's name around when Ocarina beat FFVII this year.

*WARNING: MAJOR OoT Spoilers ahead, just to be safe*

I wonder, would Shiek even count as a separate character? She's far, far closer to Super Sonic than Mega Man X. If not, then maybe Bacon could be convinced to replace "Zelda" with "Zelda/Shiek" for contest purposes, although that's creating an obvious spoiler reminiscent of the Villains Contest.

*end spoilers*

I don't think "Sheik is Zelda" counts as a spoiler anymore. Nintendo has spent the better part of ten years acknowledging it. Also, the canonical story (as far as I remember, anyway) states that Zelda doesn't simply dress up and get a tan, but uses magic to become an entirely different person. Bacon has been pretty liberal with the characters he'll allow in, so I'm hoping this can be another such case.

Sora and Roxas, though the same, are still two different physical beings, even though he was unconscious, Roxas has been physically standing with Sora. Sheik and Zelda can't really pull that off, as when one of the two exists, the other ceases to be.

In Samus's case, it's due to ignorance. Sheik's case is more due to complete ambiguity. I'm sure Nintendo has confirmed that she is indeed female, but even they have never been that clear about it. But heck, if anything, I just consider such ambiguity to be more of a reason to let Sheik in.

I see lots of fanfiction where Sheik's male and hooks up with Link. You're welcome for that image.

While we're on the Zelda kick, how would Toon Link do? He is a different character than regular Link, and though he's a Link he doesn't have nearly the same appeal. I'd figure Toon Link would be strong, but wouldn't stand up to most of the near-elite like Vincent/Squall/Auron.

At least we'd probably have a Link lose for once!

Brawl did well for me, but not enough to net me the Guru win over Krahenprophet, so kudos to him.

He'd probably be a midcarder. Against DA ONE TROO LINK in that fourway Link poll, he managed to end in third place in front of Young Link, and would have been second if it hadn't been for joke votes. Plus, Toon Link was still the number 2 character on his sole contest appearance in 2003.

Hmm...speaking of Links, what would the Link hierarchy be? I'm thinking Classic Link>Dark Link>>Toon Link>=Young Link, with CD-i Link being an outlier due to joke votes.

Personally, instead of Game of the Year polls, maybe he could do a 32-game bracket for "Best game of 2009"?

I'd like to see Modern Warfare 2 win when it has to get more than 50% of votes at a RPG gaming site.

That could be fun. Hell, narrow it to 16 games, which wouldn't be that hard, and we could do this in two weeks, which is how long GotY usually lasts anyway.

It would be nice in a lot of ways, but I'd rather see a bunch of games first over each system's GotY-award than just select sixteen games. Maybe if something like that was done after the preliminary GotY-awards to decide the overall-GotY, that'd be cool...but let's give a lot of games chances on their system/platform first like usual.

I'll be surprised if Bowser doesn't win that. He's no Falco Lombardi, and the other guys are no Vincent.

Bowser > Gordon

Also, remember Marth's two matches last year. A pretty comfortable win as the lone Nintendo character, and a disgraceful loss as soon as Lucario (who's fodder, anyway) was thrown in.

If Gordon could get ~37,000 votes in sixteen hours like at GameSpot for any given match on top of his general GameFAQs-strength, it's hard to imagine him ever being eliminated. It would probably be a matter of getting Gordon in a GameFAQs-match that's important enough for Steam to feel the need to get behind...and considering Gordon's only made R3 once here and wasn't even close to advancing with Samus and Vincent in the match, plus with Gordon likely already owning GameSpot's "Best Game Hero Ever" title at that time, I doubt they're going to get too involved.

Dang, so much for our hopes of a 1v1 All Fictional Characters bracket.

3/5/6/7/8-ways... nah, I don't see it. SB's clearly got something different up his sleeve that he's excited to unveil; I don't think "lol let's add FOUR MORE!" would qualify.

Tag Teams: this is certainly looking a heavy favorite at this point. However...

Another idea that's been thrown around is an "elimination gauntlet." Basically the idea is something along the lines of: we'd have 128 characters, but R1 would be an 8-way battle where everyone votes which of the 8 they want eliminated. And then the two characters with the most votes that day get the boot. With things turned around like this, suddenly heavy spotlight guys like Link/Cloud/Mario will have to be very nervous, as anti-voting can sink you super quick.

The elimination style format sounds weird, but I actually wouldn't rule it out, just based on how SB appears really determined to shake things up this time around.

Delaying the CB makes sense, so I can live with it. We had Gamespot's hilarious contest to tide us over anyway, which if nothing else gave us a decent winner that really distinguishes the site from GameFAQs.

I can only imagine what the new format will be. Either it'll be genuinely interesting and shake up the contest, or it'll be completely stupid and infuriate many people here and I'll laugh at them for taking the thing so seriously. Either way, I win.

Come on, you've got to give the credit to Valve/Steam and not the GameSpot voters for Gordon's win. If they do the same thing here, it's very possible that Gordon could win the entire thing.

Gordon was hanging close with Link before Steam rallied him. Steam merely boosted Gordon to huge levels, but he's still legitimately strong and still had a solid chance of winning even if Steam didn't get involved.
