...Based on what? An absolutely meaningless overperformance in the finals? I've cited Solid/Cloud's R4 in 2008 and Mario/Seph's R3 in 2007 several times for saying why he probably beats Mario. Solid being able to bandwagon the way he did after the level of importance he's had since 2006 is just a scary x-factor in his favor. MC should be quite strong over there, too -- there's a reason why people constantly predict MC to go far every year here, and it's because he's very popular outside of here. I'm not convinced he's gonna win it all, but he's gonna do very well. --- Nominate DOC LOUIS (Punch-Out!!): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=49774975 |

Solid
being able to bandwagon the way he did after the level of importance
he's had since 2006 is just a scary x-factor in his favor. Bandwagoning is based on voter perception. It has little to do with actual strength (though you need SOME strength to get one). It's why Kirby can get a big enough bandwagon to beat Sonic despite only beating the likes of Big Boss, Dante, Master Chief, and Leon Kennedy. Strong characters, sure, but it's not like Kirby winning is something that shocked the board. I've cited Solid/Cloud's R4 in 2008 and Mario/Seph's R3 in 2007 several times for saying why he probably beats Mario. 43.14% for Snake vs. 43.35% for Mario with Fox McCloud (and no, Big Boss doesn't hurt Sephiroth worse than Fox hurts Mario, no matter what you want to say). Not convinced. --- "Hold on a minute! That testimony stinks!" "Witness! You can't just say 'Hello' and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!" |
charmander6000 | Posted 8/18/2009 8:00:09 PM | message detail |
Fox also got like 9% on that poll so even if he did hurt Mario it wasn't that much. Also excluding SFF what do you expect Cloud to get in a Cloud/Sephiroth match? --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |

It
does have polls sometimes, but you gotta drag the site down a bit to
see it. They typically have polls that last a couple days over big
video game events or news. They dont have one atm though But I'm guessing they are gonna put these matches there. It
was sprite-Mario VS sprite-Fox with Sephiroth as well...I really doubt
Fox-fans that hardcore switch en masse to Mario; the Fox-fans who would
have voted for Mario > Sephiroth probably already did vote for
Mario. Also, one could argue Mewtwo hurt Solid Snake if we want to go
the route of Solid being bothered by Nintendo. Either way, they both probably had minimal affect on Mario/Solid and Cloud's got a decent spread on Sephiroth. Mario/Solid is obviously still a close match, but our four-way contests and recent trends point to Solid likely having the edge. --- Nominate DOC LOUIS (Punch-Out!!): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=49774975 |

It
was sprite-Mario VS sprite-Fox with Sephiroth as well...I really doubt
Fox-fans that hardcore switch en masse to Mario; the Fox-fans who would
have voted for Mario > Sephiroth probably already did vote for Mario. It's easy to rationalize it that way, but that's generally not how LFF works. I don't see any reason to believe the effect was minimal. I mean, we still believe that Vaan probably cost Rikku that match against Knuckles despite the fact that he got about the same amount Fox did. The fact that Fox's percentage was small, he had his sprite, or whatever, still doesn't change the fact that the result was altered and we have no idea to what extent, so it can't be regarded as conclusive. Also, one could argue Mewtwo hurt Solid Snake if we want to go the route of Solid being bothered by Nintendo. It's a pretty weak argument, but sure, I guess you could. We've still yet to see conclusive evidence that Snake is bothered by Nintendo (No, Samus/Snake 2006 isn't conclusive evidence). Cloud's got a decent spread on Sephiroth. Based on their matches with Link in 2005, it's 53/47, which is about the gap between Link and Cloud. A clear victory, but not a huge spread. Don't get me wrong, I'd probably pick Snake over Mario myself, but I don't see any really solid evidence for him being clearly stronger. --- "So cold. I am always by your side." Also,
for whatever the reason, Super Mario World won big time in South
America and Brazil yesterday. Was the NES not released there or
something? Super Mario World winning in South America was all because of Brazil. This what the results would have looked like in South America if you excluded Brazil: Donkey Kong (1981) 14.10% 156 Mario Bros. (1983) 21.07% 233 Super Mario Bros. (1985) 35.90% 397 Super Mario Bros. 2 (1989) 2.62% 29 Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990) 5.24% 58 Super Mario World (1991) 11.75% 130 Super Mario 64 (1996) 6.33% 70 Super Mario Sunshine (2002) 0.36% 4 Super Mario Galaxy (2007) 0.27% 3 One of the many Mario spinoff games 1.36% 15 I've never played a single Mario game 0.99% 11 TOTAL VOTES 1106 Super Mario Bros. does slightly better in South America (once Brazil is excluded) compared to the whole world. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as KrahenProphet, Guru Champ! |

Brazil is always the odd one out, does it have to do something culturally or because they speak portuguese instead of spanish? Or is it because along with china and india they are amongst the fastest developping countries? there's gotta be something that explains why brazil always seems to go against the south american norm. --- this topic has now officially been VOLTCH'D |

If you guys all flock over there for their contest...yeah. Also, as mentioned, according to Empire Magazine Super Mario Galaxy beats MGS4, but probably loses to Call of Duty 4 even worse than it actually did...but the list suggests that Call of Duty 4 beats Ocarina of Time as well, so that would be out of Call of Duty 4 being really, really strong as opposed to SMG being a huge letdown based on expectations. On the list, Brawl was 80th, Twilight Princess was 63rd, MGS4 was 32nd, Resident Evil 4 was 30th, and Galaxy was 24th, COMPLETELY THE OPPOSITE OF THEIR STRENGTHS ON THIS SITE!!! But how's this for opposite strengths: Civilization was 5th, Doom was 7th, and Ocarina of Time was 8th. YEAH, HOW AWESOME!!! Oh, and Donkey Kong Country was 76th. So apparently DKC should beat Brawl, but should lose to...Rome: Total War, which was 75th. Oh, and Final Fantasy VIII was 73rd, Diablo II was 72nd, StarCraft was 52nd, and Half-Life was 29th...MORE OPPOSITES FTW. And Call of Duty 4 was 4th, and World of Warcraft was 3rd, and Final Fantasy VII was 2nd (so FF7 IS better than Ocarina, good job Empire!), and Super Mario World was 1st. And A Link to the Past was 27th, BioShock was 26th, and Resident Evil was 25th (so RE4 isn't even the best game in it's series). Oh, and how's this for super opposites: Metroid Prime was 47th, Shadow of the Colossus (much to Ulti's bitter disappointment!!!) was 35th, and Halo 3 was 23rd. |

Unlike
Super Mario Bros. which was weak only in Brazil and would have won in
South America if it wasn't for them, the original LoZ is weak in all of
South America, including Brazil. I think we are slowly transitioning into our regular school year trends right now. For the poll from 2 days ago here were the vote totals for the DSV and ASV: DSV - 29519 ASV - 31268 Vote Differential - 1749 And for the last poll: DSV - 27462 ASV - 31498 Vote Differential - 4036 A pretty big difference between two different days within the weekday itself. I don't know if this is because of a bunch of schools starting up their school year today. Within 2 weeks, we should be completely back into regular school year trends. That's when we should be seeing a vote differential of around 10000 or more between the DSV and ASV. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as KrahenProphet, Guru Champ! |

Well
I was bored today so I decided to make a chronological bracket of the
last contest. Basically I took the date of each character's first game
(hopefully), put them in order and split it into eight divisions. Of
course some dividing lines are inbetween games (Big Boss & Solid
Snake, Scorpion & Sub-Zero, Crono/Frog & Magus). Expect a lot
of SFF and Kratos pretty much saves the last two divisions at being
lol-worthy. 1980-1988 Bowser Ganondorf Luigi Zelda Mega Man Nana Ryu The Dog Big Boss Link Mario Samus Donkey Kong L-Block Pac-Man Pit 1988-1992 Kain Highwind King Dedede Marth Solid Snake Cecil Harvey Guybrush Threepwood Kirby Sonic CATS Rydia Ryu Hayabusa Yoshi Alucard Captain Falcon Duke Nukem Scorpion 1992-1995 Kefka Mega Man X Meta Knight Siegfried Schtauffen Fox McCloud Frog Knuckles the Echidna Miles “Tails” Prower Ness Sub-Zero Wario Zero Crono Diddy Kong Falco Lombardi Nightmare 1995-1998 Leon Kennedy Tifa Lockheart Vincent Valentine Deckard Cain Cloud Strife Sephiroth Jill Valentine Jinjo Chris Redfield Crash Bandicoot Magus Ramza Albert Wesker Banjo Geno Zack Fair 1998-2001 Fei Fong Wong Isaac Raiden Squall Leonhart Dante Gordon Freeman Mewtwo Zidane Tribal Heavy Master Chief Liquid Snake Pikachu Revolver Ocelot Shadow the Hedgehog Spy Vivi Ornitier 2001-2004 Auron Captain Olimar Hogger Lloyd Irving KOS-MOS Kratos Aurion Ratchet Riku Arthas Menethil Laharl Sandbag Tidus Mudkip Roxas Sora Tom Nook 2005-2007 Kratos Lucario Miles Edgeworth Wander Balthier Bunansa Frank West Luke fon Fabre Midna Axel Steel Lucas Marcus Fenix Phoenix Wright Amaterasu Ike Jade Curtiss Raz 2007-2008 Commander Shepard Neku Sakuraba Travis Touchdown Weighted Companion Cube Altair Captain MacMillan Kaim Argonar Sackboy Big Daddy Nathan Drake Niko Bellic Tim GlaDOS Nero Professor Layton Sho Minamimoto --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |
