Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 753

UltimaterializerX | Posted 7/20/2009 1:16:08 AM | message detail
450 is typically the cutoff post count for new topics in the offseason. Surprised this hasn't been made yet.

Oh and "soda" > all other options. We civilized people know the correct names for things.

A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything.

True, but the stats topics have been very dead lately so it takes very long just for it to reach 500 once we're at 450. I even remember someone else making a stats topic when the other one was around 450 and it ended up purging because current one was moving way too slow.

Soda is the correct answer, but soft drink is also acceptable. Pop is a genre of music or a failed advertising campaign for TNN/Spike TV.

I would say the cutoff point is needed during the contest season and also during the first few weeks (probably the first 2 or 3) of the off-season when there's still a lot stuff to discuss that's actually related to the contest.

There is a possible chance that over 90% of the Soda votes could come from the United States. There was a poll a few months ago where the United States provided one of the options with over 90% of its votes.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3444

The United States gave MySpace 92.49% of its votes and did about 6% better in the United States compared to the entire world. Everywhere else, MySpace did horrible (even in Canada).

It was more unknown. Sure we heard it on shows and the news did a story on it, but those types of sites need a small userbase to start off like with Facebook.

Asia
Brazil
Mexico
United Kingdom
Italy
Sweden
Philippines

Cola
Germany
Netherlands

Pop
Canada

Soda
North America
United States

Soft Drink
Oceania
Australia

Other
Finland

Finland is the weird one here being the only country where "Other" wins. In Sweden, there's a close 4-way race between 4 different options. Other than the United States, Mexico is the only other place where "Soda" actually looked decent.

I took a look at the number of votes for Mineral and Fizzy Drink that came from Europe. There were 275 votes for Mineral and 1853 for Fizzy Drink. Once all of the votes from the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Sweden have been excluded, there's only 136 votes for Mineral and 175 for Fizzy Drink that came from the rest of Europe. Assuming that they all came from Ireland (where both terms are popular), then this poll only had around 300 votes that came in from Ireland.

I also respect Oceania's stance on Soft Drinks.

If you took the total number of votes from Oceania and subtracted that from the total number of votes from Australia, most of the remaining votes should have come from New Zealand. There are 412 votes from Oceania that did not come from Australia. If you assume all 412 votes were from New Zealand, the results would look like this in New Zealand:

Coke 28.40% 117
Cola 1.94% 8
Fizzy Drink 28.88% 119
Mineral 0.73% 3
Pop 0.73% 3
Soda 7.28% 30
Soda Pop 0.00% 0
Soft Drink 24.76% 102
Tonic 0.24% 1
Other 7.04% 29
TOTAL VOTES 412

There are certainly other countries in Oceania besides Australia and New Zealand, but those 2 countries should be expected to contribute at least 95% or more of the Oceania votes.

Trend chart for yesterday's poll:

Time | Coke | Cola | Fizzy Drink | Mineral | Pop | Soda | Soda Pop | Soft Drink | Tonic | Other
EBV | 17.56% | 1.19% | 0.28% | 0.37% | 19.39% | 49.91% | 1.19% | 4.32% | 0.46% | 5.33%
PHV | 18.14% | 1.56% | 1.02% | 0.34% | 20.58% | 47.83% | 1.07% | 4.46% | 0.61% | 4.39%

BSV | 22.27% | 6.94% | 5.39% | 0.81% | 16.04% | 31.91% | 0.94% | 7.39% | 0.80% | 7.50%
DSV | 20.35% | 3.84% | 2.61% | 0.58% | 19.72% | 40.71% | 1.07% | 4.49% | 0.71% | 5.93%
ASV | 20.24% | 2.75% | 2.07% | 0.43% | 20.17% | 43.66% | 1.18% | 3.67% | 0.82% | 5.01%
SNV | 20.50% | 2.29% | 0.82% | 0.45% | 20.93% | 44.09% | 1.18% | 3.84% | 1.07% | 4.83%

Soda got the board vote and Power Hour support. The FNV was bad and even more worse for the BSV. It was able to recover in the DSV. It improved with the ASV and barely improved with the SNV, but the ASV was never as good as the support it received at the start of the poll. Coke gets off to a bad start in the first hour, but every other time period was better than its Power Hour. It wasn't really capable of taking advantage of the Soda and Pop drop off with the FNV and BSV, but it only went up slightly during these two time periods. Pop also got a strong Power Hour and dropped off big time with the FNV and BSV. It recovers in the DSV and has a good ASV and SNV. Canadian ASV lives! Cola, Fizzy Drink, Mineral, Soft Drink, and Other all did their best with the FNV and BSV.
