I don't think I'm the only one who thinks this. Analyzing regular, boring POTDs just reminds me how much we need a contest.

I hope we at least get some kind of confirmation of a character contest soon. We should soon if its gonna start like September. Isn't that when they start these days?

I'm just surprised how much effort you're willing to invest in analyzing these kinds of POTDs, Luster.

It doesn't take a lot of effort since most PotDs aren't interesting at all and I don't do this very often.

If there was a Minesweeper rally, then it might make it in. I might not even have any use for the trends later on, but it was better for me to be safe than sorry.

I know it wouldn't be able to get at least second place and move on to the next round, but it would be nice to see one of the built-in Windows PC games to make it into a contest. I'm not saying they would be stronger then Minesweeper; they probably wouldn't. But those Genesis games are kinda like the hardcore fanbases of monkey island and tales. They always get em in even if they're weak, and I doubt many people would be nominating Minesweeper. It doesn't seem like the kind of game people would go out of their way to nominate.

Oh yeah, now I remember seeing him in here in times, though I don't remember him posting favorites lists or rankings on other sites nearly as much as he did in Ulti's PCA topic.

It's worth mentioning that this is the only list I've found which states that RE4/KH2(/SotC) would be a close match...for 2nd place. Of course, when a game places high on lists but flat out bombs in the contest (we're talking about #5 on the list, I guess), then you know GameFAQs doesn't care. Oh, Resident Evil 4 loses to Deus Ex and Ico, and WoW/Oblivion handles A Link to the Past and Mario 3 (and Resident Evil 4) while still not being able to handle Chrono Trigger, Tomb Raider, Sonic 2, StarCraft, Sega Rally Championship, PES3, Gears of War, and Grim Fandango.

If there's one thing contest-related that's funny about this list, it's that it states that Super Mario Galaxy not only defeats Call of Duty 4 easily, but it also can win close matches with Chrono Trigger, Resident Evil 4, and even Final Fantasy VII...while losing to Guitar Hero and Doom (which only Tetris and Ocarina can beat). Oh, and StarCraft loses to Gears of War, Civilization II, Half-Life, SimCity, Gran Turismo, and Mario Galaxy, and World of Warcraft and Oblivion lose to Tecmo Super Bowl, Okami, and Contra... Call of Duty 4, Metroid Prime, Symphony of the Night, Knights of the Old Republic, and Final Fantasy VI all lose to...Soul Calibur, which loses to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (which also beats out BioShock, God of War, and Shadow of the Colossus) and Deus Ex.

Apparently Banjo-Kazooie > Perfect Dark > Majora's Mask > Pokemon RBY, and all four of them defeat SSBM and GoldenEye...while losing to Metroid Prime 3 and Pikmin 2 (oh, and Brawl beats Twilight Princess, but can't handle Star Fox 64 or Wind Waker...and Super Mario Galaxy beats every other Mario game except for the original Super Mario Bros....and Super Mario 3 can't even handle Street Fighter II, let alone Super Mario World or A Link to the Past). And this is "Official" Nintendo Magazine...right.

That's enough for now, methinks.

Oh, and quite a few lists are beginning to eschew Mario 3 in favor of its SNES sequel; funny considering that that actually showed up in the contest (is there any doubt that World is stronger now? Though some part of me thinks that Mario 3 collapsed because it's a 2 hour game that went against a 50 hour game, but whatever). And yes I just downloaded Super Mario World on the Virtual Console (even though I already own the GBA version) and I beat the 1st level of the game along with the Switch Palace.

After having three very close matches with SMB3 and seeing SMB3 winning the one with the least amount of distractions (even if SMW beat SMB3 with LoZ:LttP) -- which was also the match SMB3/SMW had the weakest competition in their trilogy -- there should still be doubt...

...for now. In the next BGE though, SMB3's not touching SMW. I'd take SMW > SMB3 for now too, but it's certainly not unfathomable that SMB3 could take it one-on-one or in a neutral match.

What Actually Happened: Twilight Princess/Resident Evil 4/Brawl/Metal Gear Solid 4 (32 points)

Notes: Funny how IGN Readers' Choice came closest to predicting the outcome. And aside from that, quite a few of these publications suggested that Gears of War beats Resident Evil 4 (which scared me and I picked Gears to advance because I thought it would rSFF RE4, oops). Only VGChartz suggested that Half-Life 2 loses to Twilight Princess, and they also suggested that Shadow of the Colossus beats both of them. Also, on Edge's list Twilight Princess was 96th and Brawl was 69th, while Final Fantasy XII was 25th, Street Fighter IV was 14th, Grand Theft Auto IV was 12th, Super Mario Galaxy was 8th, Resident Evil 4 was 4th and Half-Life 2 was 3rd.

Oh yeah, and #21-30 make me think that Vice City being stronger than San Andreas is very plausible. And Yoshi's Island was #10.

Then again Final Fantasy VII was like 48th or something, and MGS4 was absent, and the Bomberman series was 31st, so***yeah. Also it's funny how Twilight Princess was 96th when Majora's Mask was 77th, Wind Waker was 23rd, A Link to the Past was 5th, and Ocarina of Time was 1st, so***yeah. Oh, and LittleBigPlanet was 11th, BioShock was in the 35-31 range, and Portal (along with Oblivion I think) was in the 45-40 range. And Civilization IV, Rock Band 2, and Left 4 Dead were in the top 20, and Mario 3 was #20, and StarCraft was #38, and Symphony of the Night was the highest ranked PS1 game (and Star Fox 64 was 98th).

Out of all the SMB3/SMW matches, the closest one to being a neutral match was the round 3 match with FFIV and MM3. Although MM3 is considered quasi-Nintendo and probably wouldn't have affected the SMB3 > SMW result. The next 2 SMB3/SMW matches had actual Nintendo competition involved.

I'd love to see the "favorite Super Mario game" poll re-run again just to confirm if SMW really is stronger than SMB3.

A 1v1 match would be as neutral as you can get and SMB3 won over SMW in the match which was as close as you can get to being neutral. I'd probably still pick SMB3 > SMW in a 4-way match featuring no other Nintendo competition (quasi-Nintendo like MM3 doesn't count), but would switch to SMW > SMB3 in later rounds when another Nintendo opponent enters the match.

That "Neutral match still had FF4, another top early SNES title. I'm pretty sure it hurt SMW since SMW beat SMB3 the other 2 matches

Well, while that is a really remote possibility I guess, we do know that Mario is stronger than Yoshi indirectly. And that's enough to show how unreliable POTDs are. Besides, Yoshi slaughtered Bowser even worse in the favorite Mario character polls and lost in an Ulti-style blowout 1v1 in a contest.
