Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days. Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples) For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything. --- `·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.,¸¸,.~*ST*~.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.,¸¸,.·´`·.,¸¸,.·´ KrahenProphet lives up to his name. Congrats on winning! |

It
doesn't have to be a video game character tournament if the field is
expanded. That's just a bad restriction because it defeats the purpose
of adding them. We might as well just drop the "appeared in a video game" restriction then. Then
I think I've looked at this idea differently from you and others then.
I still want the focus to be on video game characters whether they
originated from a game or not. If the idea is to let video game
characters face others via a loophole of them having been in a video
game before, I don't support that or the direction that leads. It's a tiny difference, but it matters a lot to me. I hate to use the slippery-slope argument, but if we're doing that, then why not just allow any fictional character regardless of their gaming status other than we don't think we could persuade SB to go that far? --- Nominate DOC LOUIS (Punch-Out!!): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=49774975 |

Have to disagree with HaR on this one. LeonhartFour | Posted 6/28/2009 1:01:09 PM | message detail How is that keeping them on the same field? Let them use common artwork regardless of the medium. That would be keeping it on the same field. Yes, agreed. Let's just concentrate on getting the strongest video game characters into the field, and from there on let everyone always look their best in their match pics, as I've argued we should always have been doing. The non-traditional characters are probably at something of a disadvantage anyways when going up against the veterans- why drive them down even further by forcing Indiana Jones to look like a lego? --- KrahenProphet is the King of the Gurus! I
don't care to see Harrison Ford against Solid Snake though. If a
realistic Indy is to be represented, they should make a realistic
Indy-based game. Until then, don't ignore the video game side of a
character on a video game site. Why should we actively ignore the only
thing that makes them eligible for the contest? --- Nominate DOC LOUIS (Punch-Out!!): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=49774975 |
LeonhartFour | Posted 6/29/2009 1:03:01 PM | message detail |
They aren't
eligible for a contest, and that was the point of expanding the field.
We've already seen Pierce Brosnan in match pics before. I fail to see
the problem with using the most popular representation. This is like
people saying we need to use Lettuce Kefka every year because the FMV
stuff comes from a remake. It's a ridiculous and unnecessary
restriction. I don't understand why we want to restrict fictional
characters in the first place. If we're going to let them in the
contest, go all-out with it. Otherwise, don't even bother because it's
just a waste of space. There's no point in having Indiana Jones in a
contest if we're forced to use video game artwork that is obviously
ugly and not true to people's pictures of who they are. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "Krahenprophet is lightning...the rain transformed." |
HaRRicH | Posted 6/29/2009 1:36:00 PM | message detail |
I
said "eligible" assuming they were allowed into the contest this year;
I'm aware they're not eligible right now. The Kefka-example's bad
because Kefka from FMVs is still Square-material for a character that
spawned from a video game. People just hated that clown-Kefka was ugly
too. Either way, I think this idea has taken us too far astray from the contest's foundation for me to really support anymore. Interesting, yes, and probably enjoyable, but this isn't a direction I want to see the contests go now. I'll try not to be an open hater about it, but this idea isn't for me. --- Nominate DOC LOUIS (Punch-Out!!): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=49774975 |

Also, about GE: 1) Wasn't the Brosnan-pic used still in the instruction-booklet and used to promote the game in some fashion? I'm okay with that if he was. 2) If it's not from anything related to GE's game, the point is still that he didn't rely on it and it wasn't the norm -- GE is still four-to-two for game-related pics to regular movie-pics in that scenario, and this is EASILY the best-received game based off of other material. Bond deserves that right the most if it were to work like that, and he still only got it twice. Exceptions happen whether we like it or not, but we can still talk about the principle...and I'm not cool with that becoming the standard if that pic wasn't used somewhere in GE's game-canon. --- Nominate DOC LOUIS (Punch-Out!!): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=49774975 |
