Someone put on my Wiki article that I was rarely been seen on the (Stats) topics since Summer 2007. Pretty sure I was around a bunch in 08 but hey. I am now posting. That's
some excellent news- firstly that Characters are not only returning,
but that it'll happen sooner rather than later (well "sooner" as in we
might be an announcement in the next 2-3 months, which is a reasonable
length for this mini off-season), and secondly that he realizes the
4way format has gone stale and will (maybe?) be receptive to new ideas. As to what the new format will be, I don't think that his wording makes the return of 1v1s impossible. Clearly he likes his new idea and is just excited to spring it on us as a fun "surprise" that he doesn't want spoiled this far ahead of time. Which is fair enough. And after all the uproar a few months back, there's no doubt that he's well aware of how much we like 1v1s- at this point shifting back to them actually WOULD be a surprise, and a pleasant one for us, as he expects it would be. I've got to imagine though that he's leaning more in the direction of all fictional characters. Doesn't it just seem like the logical next step? "Dang, the same people always do good in these things, I need to spice them up. I know, we'll do 4 players at a time- and I'll let in L-Block!" "Whoa, L-Block was a huge success! Let's try it again, but this time with Sandbag and Hogger and Weighted Companion Cube as well; they'll love that!" "Uh oh, they turned their back on joke characters. I'll have to take it up a notch- Gandalf and Darth Vader, here we come!" The weird thing is, this time we're actually cheering him on! (Well not Smurf apparently, but yeah.) --- KrahenProphet is the King of the Gurus! All Hail! thengamer.com/guru | thengamer.com/xstats | board8.wikia.com |

I have to agree with Smurf that I'm not too fond with other fictional characters, but I also hated the idea of joke characters. What would be interesting is whether people will take this as a videogame character competition rather than a fictional character competition. Remember when many Halo fans supported Castlevania since it was a best series contest rather than a best game contest? If the former is true we could see every single fictional character flop with only a few exceptions. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |

Problem
with Valkyria Chronicles is too many people seem to like various minor
characters as opposed to one big name. Personally I'll be nominating
Welkin and Alicia (and no one else from the game). The idea of Gandalf vs. Link sounds cool. How well do strong video game characters stand up to the best known faces of popular fiction? On the other hand, logging on to see "Gandalf vs. Darth Vader" is less appealing since neither has their fame based on video games. I'm not actually that enthusiastic about another character contest - isn't there something else that could be contested apart from the best game and the best character? --- http://www.philosophynow.org/issue58/58kirby.htm Currently playing: Persona 3 FES |
RPGuy96 | Posted 6/13/2009 7:12:09 PM | message detail |
I
think there's a lot of potential in a fictional characters contest, but
nevertheless it isn't very appealing to me because I don't really care
about the non-videogame fictional characters that are likely to be
popular. --- Krahenprophet...and Guru... http://backloggery.com/rpguy96 |

I
agree, and that's why I was initially against the idea of having them
fully mixed. As we saw from the last Contest, MK64 or SMK would smash
any single Mega Man, KH1 or 2 would destroy any Castlevania, Melee or
Brawl would stomp all over any Sonic, etc. Yet when you turned it into
a "Best Series" battle all of those tightened way up (or even
reversed). Voters actually put some thought into their choices and
considered the entire series, apparently, and I see the same kind of
thing carrying over to this Summer, with the well-liked traditional
characters having "respect" or momentum from past years and being
overpowered as a result. Honestly though, I don't think that mindset is going to make all that big a difference in the long run. Sonic and Mega Man command respect as series, but I don't think we feel as strongly about characters, and especially not outside of the NN. I mean I could see Mario edging out a win over Darth Vader thanks to playing the "respect" card, but does anyone feel that strongly about Dante or Kratos or Master Chief? Seems to me plenty of midcarders get by largely on their appealing character design, and just hope to draw favorable opponents outside of that. Those are the kind of situations where bringing in the Wolverines and Harry Potters of the world would make things mighty interesting IMO. --- KrahenProphet is the King of the Gurus! I'd
like to take this time to say that Harry Potter would be a massive
flop/may not make the contest. I also see Darth Vader not doing so
well, going the same way as Crono. Again the title will be very important, if it's a videogame character contest even characters like Batman and Superman will struggle to get out of mid-carders. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |

North 1 Cloud Strife 16 Ken PLEASE give Ken a winnable match, for cryin' out loud! He deserves that much! 8 Bowser 9 Leon Kennedy We already saw this in 2006. We don't need to see it again. Don't need to see Cloud/Bowser again either, even if it was 6 years ago. 5 Ike 12 Frog Heh, ASV comeback in mind, eh? I like it. 4 Yoshi 13 Ryu Good match. Not sure Ryu would win that one. 6 Arthas 11 Gordon Freeman Aw yeah Freeman 3 Vincent Valentine 14 Red/Ash Slaughterhouse 7 Sora 10 Zelda A good match. I like it. 2 Megaman 15 Phoenix Wright We don't need to see Mega Man face Sora or Zelda for the second time either. East 1 Solid Snake 16 Marth Marth deserves better than a 16 seed here. 8 Mewtwo 9 Aeris Gainsborough Man, I think Mewtwo's gettin' overhyped if people think he can win this one. I bet a lot of people bite on it. 5 Dante 12 Ryu Hayabusa Saw this in 2006. Don't need it again. 4 Charizard 13 Robo Interesting set-up here. Hmmm... 6 Revolver Ocelot 11 Red XIII Big upset here. 3 Samus Aran 14 The Boss Aw yeah Female Bracket time 7 L-Block 10 Locke Cole Please don't do this to Locke, I'm begging you! 2 Sephiroth 15 The Prince of Persia Well, someone has to get owned by Sephy. South 1 Link 16 Sackboy Fine here. 8 Kefka 9 Epona I'm biting on Epona. 5 Pikachu 12 Vivi I like this match here. This one has potential. 4 Master Chief 13 Magus More day vote destruction, though I doubt MC even struggles here. 6 Squall Leonhart 11 Meta-Knight Meta Knight no match! 3 Auron 14 Pac-Man Auron no match for Squall next round! 7 Kirby 10 Cid Highwind Ah, a good match here. We should see what Cid's made of here. 2 Sonic the Hedgehog 15 Tommy Vercetti I dunno if we need Tommy fodder anymore. 1 Mario 16 CATS CATS working his way through the Noble Nine still! 8 Yuna 9 Saria Uhhh...is this supposed to be debatable? 5 Luigi 12 Zack Fair Luigi wins, but by how much? 4 Big Boss 13 Zero Oh man, I like this match here. 6 Tifa Lockheart 11 Liquid Snake FFVII/MGS SFF strikes again! Liquid owned and everyone predicts Tifa to beat Link! 3 Ganondorf 14 Riku Ganondorf gets owned by Tifa next round! 7 Fox McCloud 10 Sub-Zero Ah, good match here. 2 Crono 15 Ness Ness no chance --- "But you have been given freedom. Albion
just finds different things exciting than most of us do. I can't speak
for the rest of you, but for me at least, the thing that makes the
contest (and other games or sports) so exciting is the idea of winning,
that is, of characters I like winning. There is often no way to truly
win in 4-ways, and no way to truly lose. Games that preclude winning
and losing to me are boring. An exciting contest requires opportunity
for both. --- Krahenprophet he come to town to win the Gamefaqs Contests. |

As
far as the bracket goes, Bowser/Leon is actually a good match; Bowser
may have won in '06 but Leon is the stat favorite. And we need to see
how much Mega Man's strength has diminished by seeing him against a
high midcarder, so gogogo. Oh yeah, and it would be funny if Gordon Freeman avoided a doubling from a Noble Niner (though his game did almost break 40% on a high midcarder, so...). Yeah 1 on 1 is a bit stale; I agree with MyWorldIsCrono. Well, I wasn't around back then, but 4-ways just seem more exciting. Though I don't care if we move back to 1 on 1. |
