~*Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings*~
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything.

Yes, someone should get the next Rally Tournament off the ground IMO.

ALSO, I was thinking that we ought to have some kind of B8-wide "rally" to help us get on the same page for the other fictional characters. For instance I think we can all agree that a TMNT character could have respectable strength, but if everyone just votes their favorite turtle, none of them would make even a 128 bracket. So there should be a tourney rally to pick the best option from the series, and then we'd all agree to push that character into the field.

And the same could be done for other series where a #1 choice isn't obvious.

Sounds like a good idea. I wonder what characters could have actual GOOD strength, not just decent, though. Like challenging one of our proven near elites, for instance. We should focus on those first.
charmander6000 | Posted 6/11/2009 5:03:10 PM | message detail
Maybe along with the new and returners tournament we should have a third for other fictional characters or maybe the host can run a bunch of polls so we can all support a character from each series

Oh wait, Ken Masters. Guess there's still a couple exceptions.

Ken Masters is someone who I think has some serious strength (at least mid card at Alucard level), but stuck with noble niners both years so people just assume he sucks and never brought him back. I don't get how these weaklings like Guybrush and Laharl constantly come back but Ken can't.

Ken Masters (2002c) VS Alucard (2002c)

Ken Masters has a strength of 28.49.
Alucard has a strength of 22.70.

Ken Masters wins with 60.16% of the vote!
A win of 13,669 with 67,260 total votes cast.

Actually, my Alcuard comparison might of been way off base...

Ken Masters (2002c) VS Zero (2006c)

Zero has a strength of 28.52.

Zero wins with 50.05% of the vote!
A win of 101 with 96,342 total votes cast.

Time to finish this fanfiction, even if a happy ending is no longer possible. Spoilers of course for OOT and FFVII.

Cloud and his party marched in silence, up to the gates of the Fortress of Victory, which was no longer hidden to the world but was now placed where all could gaze upon it. A few still saw it and despaired, others were awed, and still others overcame their own wills and surrendered utterly to the rule of Link. But the best, the greatest successes, they looked upon the Fortress of Victory with nothing but love for their Link, tears streaming down their faces as they contemplated his perfection. But in truth, they did not care if he was perfect. What was perfect, if not just a term to describe Link? If Link wasn't perfect, then perfection was worthless- Link was all that mattered.

Cloud and AVALANCHE alone thought of resisting and fighting Link still. Unlike the rest of the world, Cloud still remembered a day 6 years prior- or was it 7? 8? 100? However many years ago, it was a great day now at the very edge of memory, where it faded into dreams.....Aeris remembered too, but the others even in Cloud's party were not sure themselves that it had happened, and only believed because they trusted Cloud to tell the truth.

Link also remembered. He remembered far better than any of them did; he remembered every last detail of the battle, the exact time it had taken place, the weather, the positioning of the armies, each stroke of the game of swords he had played with Cloud, and Cloud's final attack, in which he slashed Link from thousands of directions almost simultaneously....

Link remembered well, and because of that, he knew fear yet. L-Block and Cloud were the only 2 beings to whom he had ever lost, and the only he had ever feared. He had found out that L-Block was just the condensation of his past lives, and had now incorporated him into himself, becoming yet stronger. But Cloud- Cloud was different, and though Link could not understand how he had lost the battle, he knew that he had, even if Cloud was beginning not to be so sure about it.

Cloud raised his sword and a huge bolt of lightning from the skies split open the gates of the Fortress of Victory- the external, physical, one that was firmly in our world. Aeris stretched out her staff and the portal-gate of the Fortress slowly opened, until at last all of AVALANCHE could pass through it easily. Cloud stepped through the gate.

Link stood on the other side, waiting.

Cloud: Link! Today we come to throw down your evil reign of tyranny and restore hope to the world!
Aeris: Thank you for giving me some additional time to live. I have used it well, I think, and will now give what life I have remaining to destroying you. Our world shall live again, free from you.

Link: Free from me? Free from me? The world loves me, Aeris, it has no wish to lose me. In fact, I can prove it to you.

Suddenly the sky above them in the Fortress of Victory changed, and it seemed every city, every town, however small, in the world had become visible. Suddenly into each of them dropped two boxes. A banner appeared over them reading, "Do you want Link as your king?" One box was marked "Yes" and one box was marked "No."

Link: People of the world, now it is your time to choose. Shall I be your king? Vote!

The people of the world stopped what they were doing, some taking longer than others, but within 5 minutes all were on their way to vote. Cloud's eyes widened in shock as voter after voter across the world put their ballots in the
"Yes" box, and scarcely one in a hundred voted "no," most of these being those who could not read.

Cloud: This is an illusion! Or you have tricked the people, or brainwashed them, or threatened them, or something, Link!

Link: No, Cloud. This is the truth. The world loves me. You are just a memory. People are happy under my rule- they have learned to care about nothing except me, and since I always triumph in everything, they are therefore always happy.

Cloud: Stop this, Link! Give them back their lives!

Link: .........

Cloud: I defeated you once before. I know I did. Now die!

Cloud charged forward, the Buster Sword raised high. At the same time Vincent, Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Cid, and Barret all launched magic attacks at Link using powerful materia. Link did not move. All of the magic and Cloud's sword stopped as they met an invisible forcefield about a foot away from Link's head. Link laughed.

Aeris gathered up her strength, and threw her materia to the ground. To use the Power Within, one had to rely on it only, and nothing else. She reached deep into herself and a whitish blue beam shot forward. Link's gave a short yelp of surprise before he was thrown hundreds of feet through the air. But he did not crash into the ground or a wall. Where there had been either, Link simply made them disappear, until he had managed to stop the momentum of Aeris's beam, and then he landed calmly on his feet on the ground.

Link was angry. A wall of fire flew across the Fortress of Victory, stretching from the ground up to the sky, as far as the dimension went. The wall of fire swallowed Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent, Cid, Red XIII, Barret, and Cait Sith. Aeris made a magical shield around herself, and Cloud simply endured it through sheer force of will. As the fire disappeared, Aeris began casting the spell to revive her fallen allies, but Link did not let her complete it. Swiftly he struck, firing a bright blue laser from the Master Sword, and killing Aeris where she stood.

Cloud screamed, and charged forward. In his rage and desperation, he at last let go of materia, let go of his training, let go of Zack's memories as a SOLDIER, and reached very very deep into the Power Within. Link saw it, and knew that this was the potential he knew was in Cloud; this was the power that had defeated him once. Link closed his eyes, and reached deep into himself also.

The energies clashed, and could not be contained by the fabric of the Fortress of Victory. They burst out at one point in it, which luckily for the planet was facing space. The energy shot upward and blew apart the moon. Another blast came from Link and Cloud, and another blast hurtled into space, vaporizing a large asteroid before continuing on into the void between star systems. A third blast finished off the entire skyward side of the Fortress of Victory, sending a wall of energy toward the inner planets that destroyed both Venus and Mercury before finally landing in the sun, where it produced great solar flares upon impact.

That was the last blast, though, for Cloud had finally been beaten. He collapsed onto the ground, unable to fight on any longer. Link walked forward, and offered him a hand to help him onto his feet. Cloud took it.

Link: Cloud, now you know my power. Have you forgotten than you ever defeated me?

Cloud: I have, my king. I have never defeated you.

Link: But surely you did! Do you not remember August 30, 2003?

Cloud: I do, my king. I took Tifa to gaze at the stars that night, and bathe in your glory that radiates from all the universe.

Link: You have forgotten at last in earnest. And so I need fear you no more- I have defeated you, now and forever. Go in peace, Cloud, and may you have a happy life. If it were not for me, you could have been great.

I guess I'd have a slight bit of interest in...

2002
Aya Brea - nay, but could be worth a try after The 3rd Birthday
Strider - deserves another shot after he held up so well on Link... but hasn't he been disqualified because he appeared in a manga before his game came out?

2003
Felix - no, but could be okay after the next Golden Sun arrives (if he's in it?)
Ken Masters - yesss

2004
Earthworm Jim - might stand out enough in a 4way match to look somewhat respectable
Protoman - yeah, he did get the shaft last time, guess he could come back

Villians
M. Bison - deserves a chance to put himself back over Akuma

2006
Claire Redfield - is she in any of the new games?
Joanna Dark - no, BUT if the Contest takes so long that we're approaching PD's re-release this holiday season I'll push for her
Chun Li - same as Ken but less extreme
