So I noticed that there was some more talk yesterday about about mixing non-video game fictional characters into the upcoming Contest. I know yo's been beating that drum for a while now, but I'm still not sure how seriously we're taking this idea. I mean, heaven knows we need something to spice these Contests back up, and there's got to be worse ideas than getting an entirely fresh set of characters (who WOULDN'T be 100% fodder) into the bracket. Right?

If we're seriously going to look into this, what would be the best way to go about it? I was thinking we should split the bracket into two, kind of like the male/female divide back in '06. Everyone gets to nom 7 vg characters and 7 from outside of games, and the left side of the bracket would be entirely new matchups like Yoda v The Joker while the right would have our classic stuff like Vincent v Sonic.

I mean, we can all agree that the Male Bracket was awesome, right? So reshuffling it three years later (after 2 seasons with 0 worthwhile stats) and with Samus/Tifa/Zelda in the mix ought to be fun. And then having an entirely new set of characters battling on the other half would also be enjoyable, I'd imagine.

I guess my fear with a completely mixed bracket would be that video game characters would dominate all over the place, just because we're so used to supporting our favorites after 8 years. With a split like this though, that probable domination would only mess up one of the 63 matches.

Thoughts?

Interesting idea, but honestly, I feel they have to be integrated. One of the main reasons to blast the roster open in the first place is to see old vs. new. Yes, Wolverine vs. Spider-Man would be interesting, but I'd much rather see Spider-Man vs. Squall. Will Link and Cloud dominate in the end? Extremely likely, but they dominate everything anyway, and I think some of the gaming elites below them might be challenged. My mind simply can't process a match like Samus vs. Batman as an open-and-shut, no questions asked dominant victory for Nintendo. I'd have to at least give Batman a chance, and I figure many others will as well. Even if the gaming characters end up dominating, the debate we'll create with these inter-medium matches will be worth it.

I've got the raw poll updates from 00:10 to ~05:40. Does anyone need them?

Well, those can be submitted to creativename (you'll probably have to email him) and whatever updates aren't already on the updater between 5:40 and the time he started running the updater can be filled in using the updates on here:

Well there were some suggestions yesterday of splitting characters into 8 distinct divisions- video game-only in 1 or 2, comic book in another, movie characters in the next and so on. That seems like a major SFF/LFF mistake to me... but would there REALLY be that much overlap on the left side if the non-gamers were all jumbled up? I mean we'd be talking crazy stuff like Goku vs James Bond, Spiderman vs Jack Sparrow- would be pretty rare to see bad overlap like Yoda vs Han Solo or Spiderman/Wolverine.

I guess my issue will a fully mixed bracket would be that if the gamers dominate (which again seems likely), that sucks some fun out of a first round where they win nearly ever match, and from there out we'd pretty much be back to a same ol, same ol character battle for the next five rounds. Whereas with the split we're guaranteed at least 31 entirely new, wildly unpredictable matchups.

I see no reason to really believe that game characters would dominate such a contest. Yeah, this is a video game website... So what? I love video games and I'd still vote for people like Batman and Jack Sparrow over pretty much any video game character. Just because this is a video game website doesn't mean that the people who come here only like video game characters.

You're massively overrating video game characters. I wouldn't take anyone outside the noble nine to even show up to a match against the likes of Batman or Darth Vader. I also think that non-game characters have much more depth of strength. If we had 32 non-game characters, I would take even the weakest of them to blowout characters like Kefka.

I don't see any non-video game character dethroning Link as top dog, honestly (except Captain Jack Sparrow, believe), but I think someone like Batman or Spider-Man could give a Noble Niner a run for their money.

Also, I'm not sure why people would be treating Pokemon differently based on the format. I think the idea that its strength is increased by the format is a fallacy. We've really seen no evidence of that for anything.

I disagree. Non-game characters have done pretty well in the Fictional Character contests on Board 8. Granted, Board 8 is not an accurate representation of GameFAQs as a whole, but if anything, Board 8 has a pro-game bias.

Actually, my theory that outside of Link/Cloud/Sephy/Mario/Snake, video game characters would flop once we introduced characters from other mediums. Most people who visit GameFAQs do not have lives that revolve around video games, and characters from other mediums are by far better and more memorable than video game characters anyway.

Samus vs. Batman
Samus vs. Spider-Man
Samus vs. Darth Vader

These are matches, folks.

When looking back this contest, I'd probably mutter to myself "A second villains contest would've been better than this". Except for like several matches, I wasn't really intrigued about the contest.

Speaking of a villains contest, how would you guys suppose that would go if we had another one? Do you think it'll be a 64 1V1, 64 four-way or a 128 four-way tournament?

128 villains? Holy crap that'd be a lot of fodder. 85% of the first contest was fodder, and it was only 32 characters!

Hmm, I don't know... I mean I realize GameFAQ visitors have lives outside of games, but (to use a random example) haven't you built up a pretty strong "relationship" with Solid Snake after following him through 39 Contests matchups over the past nine years? Wouldn't it just feel weird voting against him in a GameFAQs Contest poll setting? Could even Batman overcome a mental block like that?

Then again, maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. I mean, there are 18-20 year olds out there who have turned on their TV at 8pm on every Sunday of their lives to see what wacky situation Homer Simpson would be getting himself into. For that guy, I don't see how even Cloud or Link could hope to compete!

Off the top of my head, here's a list of characters I feel relatively confident would fall above the fodder line (wherever the heck that is these days):

Star Wars
Darth Vader
Han Solo
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Luke Skywalker
R2-D2

Lord of the Rings
Gandalf
Aragorn
Legolas

Other Movies
James Bond
Indiana Jones
Captain Jack Sparrow

X-Men
Wolverine
Gambit
Magneto

Other Comics
Batman
The Joker
Spider-Man
Venom
Superman
Captain America
The Hulk
Iron Man

Television
Jack Bauer

Cartoons
Homer Simpson
Bart Simpson
Mr. Burns
Goku
Vegeta

That's a pretty nice-sized list, and I'm surely missing a ton of characters. And these guys have all appeared in a video game. Heck, some have appeared in more than half the Noble 9.

Yes, was just going to suggest that Cartman, Yoda, and Bender be added to the original list.

I guess if you think about it, what's the fodder line these days? Maybe someone like Frog- who has only appeared in one game, a game only 65% of the current site has played, and who a decent chunk of that 65 probably disliked. I'd probably be hard pressed to take him over an Indiana Jones or Gandalf. I still think the upper half of the NN would be more or less untouchable, but beyond that I suppose the non gamers could contend decently well.

Alright, you guys have convinced me- we'll do the bracket fully mixed!

Well looking over Leon's '07 stats, I guess we'd be talking about that...

54 Frog 2007c 20.25
55 Revolver Ocelot 2007c 20.21
56 Axel 2007c 20.17
57 Duke Nukem 2007c 20.87
58 Lloyd Irving 2007c 19.97
59 Gordon Freeman 2007c 19.89
60 Amaterasu 2007c 19.81
61 Ness 2007c 20.46
62 Jill Valentine 2007c 19.96
63 Peach 2007c 19.68
64 Ike 2007c 19.51
65 KOS-MOS 2007c 19.28
66 Kefka 2007c 19.07
67 Raiden 2007c 18.96

range. From tranny's list I think don't think I'd take anyone to lose to that pack aside from maybe The Hulk, Captain America (have never seemed that well-loved to me), Goku, Vegeta (DBZ will be anti-voted TO DEATH, especially after that bomb of a movie), and perhaps Legolas (everyone was pretty annoyed at those pre-teen girls squealing over Orlando Bloom).
