I'll
take Pikachu upsets, Sonic losing to third-tier Nintendo characters,
and inanimate object domination any day. More exciting than the usual
crap we saw from 1v1's. --- Brawl did well for me, but not enough to net me the Guru win over Krahenprophet, so kudos to him. |

Let's use the games contest as an example for 1v1, assuming all the games that went to round 2 made it to the contest. ROUND 1 Tetris > Donkey Kong - Nice SFF performance by Tetris Mega Man 2 > Pac-Man - MM2 did horrible, sound the upset alarm! Super Mario Bros. > Ninja Gaiden - SMB destroys an opponent as expected The Legend of Zelda > Metroid - LoZ SFF Metroid Sonic 1 > Street Fighter II - SFII lost? Super Mario Bros. 3 > Secret of Monkey Island - lol destruction Super Mario World > Final Fantasy - expected results Final Fantasy IV > Mega Man 3 - expected results Super Metroid > Super Mario Kart - OMG nailbiter, better than four-ways LoZ: Link to the Past > Donkey Kong Country - lol SFF Final Fantasy VI > LoZ: Link's Awakening - FFVI is in trouble Sonic 2 > Mortal Kombat II - expected GoldenEye 007 > Super Mario RPG - not a top 10 game! Final Fantasy VII > Mario Kart 64 - MK64 did better than expected Super Mario 64 > Castlevania: SotN - expected results Chrono Trigger > SMW2: Yoshi's Island - lol weak Mario game Pokemon RBY > LoZ: Majora's Mask - OMG RBY for top 10 Metal Gear Solid > Pokemon GS - MGS is in trouble Final Fantasy VIII > Starcraft - epic upset LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Final Fantasy IX - expected results Final Fantasy X > Metal Gear Solid 2 - expected results Kingdom Hearts > GTA: Vice City - lol GTA Diablo II > Halo - lol Halo Super Smash Bros. Melee > LoZ: Wind Waker - lol slowflake TES IV: Oblivion > Tales of Symphonia - Woah ToS did better than expected, not as interesting as the 4-way match Metal Gear Solid 3 > World of Warcraft - expected results Resident Evil 4 > Kingdom Hearts 2 - RE4 overrated? LoZ: Twilight Princess > Final Fantasy XII - TP in trouble? Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Grand Theft Auto IV - expected results Call of Duty 4 > Super Mario Galaxy - OMG upset Metal Gear Solid 4 > Portal - expected results Fallout 3 > Halo 3 - expected results --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |

Final Fantasy VI > Sonic 2 - lol LA > Sonic 2 Final Fantasy VII > GoldenEye 007 - GE did better than expected Super Mario 64 > Chrono Trigger - OMG upset Pokemon RBY > Metal Gear Solid - expected after last round LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Final Fantasy VIII - lol Starcraft Final Fantasy X > Kingdom Hearts - KH resists SFF? Super Smash Bros. Melee > Diablo II - expected results Metal Gear Solid 3 > TES IV: Oblivion - expected results LoZ: Twilight Princess > Resident Evil 4 - maybe it wasn't overrated Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Call of Duty 4 - lol Galaxy Metal Gear Solid 4 > Fallout 3 - lol 2008 GotY ROUND 3 Super Mario Bros. > Tetris - expected results Super Mario Bros. 3 > Super Mario World - lol bracket vote saves the day LoZ: A Link to the Past > Final Fantasy VI - FFVI is weaker as expected since round 1 Final Fantasy VII > Super Mario 64 - nothing interesting LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Pokemon RBY - nothing interesting Super Smash Bros. Melee > Final Fantasy X - repeat of 2004 LoZ: Twilight Princess > Metal Gear Solid 3 - expected results Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Metal Gear Solid 4 - lol 2008 GotY again ROUND 4 Super Mario Bros. 3 > Super Mario Bros. - expected results Final Fantasy VII > LoZ: A Link to the Past - nothing interesting LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Super Smash Bros. Melee - nothing interesting Super Smash Bros. Brawl > LoZ: Twilight Princess - lol Ulti ROUND 5 Final Fantasy VII > Super Mario Bros. 3 - nothing interesting LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Super Smash Bros. Brawl - nothing interesting ROUND 6 LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Final Fantasy VII - wait a second the results were expected this time since Final Fantasy VII hasn't been hiding behind Nintendo LFF for the past three rounds. Really I don't see how this bracket in a 1v1 would be more interesting that 4-ways. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Krahenprophet for winning the guru contest |

I don't like these 4-ways because, as mentioned before, they take away from the legitimacy. If a character/game I don't like wins over a game I do like because it is put in a favorable position it just pisses me off, but the reverse is almost equally bad. Where is the satisfaction in a favorite of yours winning when its opponent needed to have its legs cut off first? Zack leading over Mario was quite a sight and lord knows I would vote for Zack over Mario 1-1, but I was rooting for Mario there. He just deserved to win that. Also, with the way the scoring system works and the possible consequences of missing a match early on, there is a lot more luck involved in making a bracket. Someone can have a higher score despite having made considerably worse predictions. I'd much rather go back to 1-1. For the sake of novelty, I think tag-team can work. Not tag-team like you would expect though (2 characters vs 2 characters). There's another idea (I've read this on the board once, I did not come up with this idea): Teams are paired according to seeds: 1/16, 2/15, ... (in the interest of keeping this representative, it makes sense to only mention the fact that it's tag-team after nominations have been held). For example, we have a team Link/CATS and a team Squall/Ganondorf. The first half of the match (this could be defined as the first 12 hours, or preferably the amount of time it usually takes to get around half of the total votes cast) Link takes it up against Squall, then the next half it's CATS versus Ganondorf. The combined percentage counts in determining the winner. I think this is great because it values skill (judging the margin of defeat becomes extremely important) and it has potential for some epic comebacks. There are some legitimacy issues with this as well (imagine Link going up against Ganondorf for the first half) but it's nowhere near as bad as 4-ways. Another problem is of course that seeding is an imperfect gauge for character strength. Master Chief would probably be paired with a 16 seed, Vincent with a 8-9 seed, making that a considerably stronger team. Then again, the teams should generally be much closer in strength than characters are in regular 1-1s or 4-ways. Lastly, it can be annoying to have for example a Master Chief/Magus team, where Master Chief takes the first half (night vote) and Magus the second (day vote), but these issues should be relatively small overall, as long as it's clear which entrant goes first. Overall I think this can be pretty awesome and I think it's at least worth giving a shot. --- Oh, I've got one. A Mexican, a Jew and a colored guy go into a bar. Normally
I'd feel like "oh wow, the contest is over" at this point, but this one
was so poor I can't really miss it. Even the Oracle wasn't the same. Weird thing is that before the final I was in the top 56 somehow, would've easily finished in the leaderboard again if the final was FF7>OoT. Kinda dumb considering how many big mistakes I made in my bracket. That's the one good thing about 4ways I guess - they're actually winnable. It's crazy. 40,000 entrants yet most of us have a more than legit shot at the final leaderboard because 4ways confuse the **** out of the masses. It's actually not the fluke of all flukes to win. I doubt too many of us really care about that though, we'd much rather have a fun and enjoyable contest. --- gamefaqscontests.com gamefaqscontests.com/gallery |

The problem of having one character out for half the poll is that it may be put at a time where it's terrible at. to be fair this bracket would have been terrible in any format gotta move things around to start making it good Yeah, one could argue that the generations was even more of a reason for the super-crappiness of this contest than 4ways. Yesterday at least had a second match to keep up with since the main one was a blowout. Did anyone really keep track of FFX/LTTP? The only reason LTTP didn't win by a lot more was because it was only getting 12% of the vote. It wasn't exciting. Seriously, no one cares about a battle for third place.
