Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 750

Good job from Bacon making a 1v1 bonus match. There are no excuses for FF7 now; Ocarina of Time is just better.

A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

Dude, it's Part 750.

750 topics, and we've just finished our... 11th contest.

Victories by Link/OoT/Zelda series (including ToC): 7 (5 excluding ToC, though Mario/Samus winning means Nintendo is still 7 overall regardless)
Victories by Cloud/Sephiroth/FF7: 3
Victories by some random Tetris block: 1

Overall, I'm satisfied with Nintendo dominating over half the contests. Here's hoping they can get a solid 2/3's majority so they can pass amendments to the GameFAQs ToS!

Brawl did well for me, but not enough to net me the Guru win over Krahenprophet, so kudos to him.

According to the patterns, if FF7 and Link aren't involved, Nintendo still wins.

Of course, another four-way games contest should favor FFX unless generations are nixed and FFX and MGS4 end up on opposite sides of the bracket. Kinda hard to imagine even RBY or Brawl fighting off LttP and SMB3/W/64 to beat FFX in a final.

Ditch OoT for aLttP, and RBY will probably go up a fair bit. Even if you swap SSBM for SMB3/W/64, I think RBY might still make a run at FFX.

Well, the way I see it games still has the intrigue of who's #3-10. The only thing left for characters is where Snake is in the Noble 9 (yeah for realz not four way bandwagoned shenanigans) and how much the bottom 3 NNers can embarrass themselves. And yeah, 1v1 would be nice.

I will try to take my best shot at this, but honestly, alot of guessing and adjusting here, this is going to look HORRIBLE.

1 Ocarina of Time
2 Final Fantasy VII
3 Pokemon RBY
4 Brawl
5 ALttP
6 SM 64
7 CT
8 SMW
9 Melee
10 FF X (I have to have it at least top 10, but I have a tough time seeing it taking 11 to be honest)
11 SMB 3
12 TP
13 KH II
14 FF VIII
15 MGS 4
16 KH
17 RE 4 (12 through 17 can literally go any order, as long as MGS 4 is ahead of RE 4)
18 Goldeneye
19 LoZ
20 MGS

God, so much of that seems off. Do we really go 15 deep before leaving Nintendo and Square?

Does SMRPG or GSC deserve to be there over others?
LinkMarioSamus | Posted 6/8/2009 11:25:28 PM | message detail
Well, it seems that Zelda 64 got about 77.32% on Zelda 3. Based just on that Zelda 3 loses to Brawl. Uhm...

Final Fantasy VII kept about 97.16% of its votes from last round. For the first time it didn't increase its votal. Who's stronger: Final Fantasy VI or Final Fantasy X?

Zelda: A Link to the Past kept about 59.29% of its votes from last round. Seriously, I never imagined that it would really get SFFd a whole lot by Zelda 64 after seeing Mario World hold up against Mario 3, but nope. The only explanation I have for it is that this site is caring less and less about 2d games. And while I already said it, Zelda 3 is projected to lose to Brawl indirectly. What the hell?

Zelda: Ocarina of Time kept about 108.33% of its votes from last round. Wow, it increased again. It seems that being able to SFF a game actually nets you more votals, for some reason. I still find it funny that Zelda 64 got a higher percentage in this match than in its own divisional finals. C'mon, was it really THAT much of a relief to be free of Pokemon and Smash hanging around?

Final Fantasy X kept about 55.89% of its votes from last round. As I guessed, it took the biggest hit between this match and last match, but man it was bad. Of course, that's what it deserves, having to get through so much SFF to get here. I think it even got to round 5 only because Melee LFFd Pokemon, and then only here because Zelda 64 SFFd Brawl. Either that, or MGS and FF8 both hurt each other and...darn it, I can't find the evidence to support MGS > FFX!

1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Round 6)
1. Final Fantasy VII (Round 3)
2. Final Fantasy VII (Round 5)
3. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Round 5)
4. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Round 4)

53. Mega Man 2 (Round 3)
54. Final Fantasy X (Round 6)
54. Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Round 3)
55. Super Mario Bros. (Round 4)

I understand the numbers are a bit jumbled up, but I didn't feel like re-adjusting them. The only ones that are tied (WTF?) are Round 3 Pokemon and Round 4 Twilight Princess.

So, I believe this lends quite a bit of credence to my 3 year old theory that had OoT and FF VII met in the finals, instead of the Regional Finals OoT would have won. Zelda overperforms like crazy in Championship matches, and FF VII absolutely crumbles.

Examples of Zelda going nuts in the Finals

2002 (poor Mario)
2004 (poor Cloud)
2005 Villains
2005 ToC
2006 Best Series Ever
2006 BR
2008 (4 Links outdrew the Final)
2009 BGE

Examples of FF VII falling off the face of the Earth in the Finals

2003 (Cloud underperformed on Sephiroth)
2004 BGE (Chrono Trigger overperformed like crazy)
2004 (Cloud just withering to Link)
2005 Villians (Seph choking hard)
2006 Best Series Ever
2006 BR (5 days of being owned, when he was supposed to keep it close)
2007 Losing to Link and the Block
2008 Losing to Snake
2009 BGE (Could not take advantage of ALttP being there, and got obliterated by OoT)

So yeah, I don't think you can have a turnaround this big in 5 years, the Finals just effect these two games/series wildly differently.

Taken from a topic, but more stats oriented than anything else.

OoT vs LoZ vs 2006 Link and 2008 Link.

For the longest time I figured LoZ was the strongest combatant ever, then 2008 Link was able to get more votes in a joke bonus match than Cloud, Crono, and Snake were able to produce in the Championship.

Now we have OoT smoking FF VII much worse than LoZ was ever able to do to FF.

So who is the strongest?

Based on yesterday's figures, FFVII would finish about a percent lower today. What an embarrassment, and honestly, I find it hard to believe that this is predominantly Ocarina growing these last five years (because another re-release on the Virtual Console wouldn't manage that). If we're going to point the blame here, point it at Square for not remaking FFVII and doing nothing big/exciting/acclaimed with the FF series since 2001.

it has everything to do with Square's absolute fall from grace. it's going to take FF13 to put this back on the map. Square has been dead for a lot of people since it merged with Enix.

PartOfYourWorld | Posted 6/9/2009 2:08:27 AM | message detail
And of course, another reason might be FFVII's own elusiveness. It's been like $60+ used for over three years now. Very few new voters even had the opportunity to play FFVII unless they were doing it via emulators. Ocarina is available in four different forms, one of which being a $10 download. There's only so long something can stay popular if more and more people don't even have the opportunity to experience it.

I hope TRE is tracking poll updates, because I sent an email to creativename a few hours ago and I guess it will take a while for him to get online. I was tracking poll updates manually, but then I decided to restart my computer right after the poll updated again, knowing that I'd be able to get back online in less than 3 or 4 minutes to track the next update. But it turns out that my computer completed died out on me, leaving me unable to connect to the internet on that one. I spent a few hours figuring how to get my laptop connected to the internet, and I succeeded.
