I imagine if 1 vs. 1 it would go:

Division 1: Video Games
Division 2: Movies
Division 3: Comic Books/Manga
Division 4: Misc.

Or if, 4 ways.

Divisions 1+2: Video Games
Division 3: Animated Film/Television
Division 4: Live Action Film/Television
Division 5: Comic Books
Division 6: Anime/Manga
Division 7: Literature
Division 8: Misc.

You know what is just as bad of an idea as dividing a fictional characters contest by genre? Dividing a video games contest by generation.

Venom Vs. The Hulk would be interesting, but I'd stick with Venom. Joker > Magneto is the obvious pick, but Magneto could win that match as well. Wolvy > SM is obvious. Spider-Man > Prof. X is also obvious.

Batman > Magneto would probably be next, or Magneto could outright finish first (big risk). Wolverine > Spider-Man, again if Prof. X can bring Wolvy down enough Spider Man might have a shot. Finals would be Batman > Wolverine or Spider Man.

Anyone think FF7 has a slight chance? If you give all of FFX's votes to FF7 and all of LttP's votes to OoT, its about 51.5 to 48.5.

But maybe some LttP fans reject OoT altogether, and think the series was better in 2d.

We argued with even more vigor back then, believe it or not. Sure, we'll still debate and throw theories all over the place, but it's now always under an overarching veil of "who cares"? It wasn't like that during 1v1s. You're absolutely right that this format produces closer matches - after all, most matches will at least two competitors that will finish within a few thousand votes of each other. However, once again, who cares? This format has really killed our willingness to care and get excited about the contest.

LTTP is a bit below 12% and FFX at about 11%. FFVII is losing by a bit under 4 points today, so if FFVII can take FFX's votes 10-1 and hold OOT to taking LTTP's votes 8-4, FFVII wins with ~51%. Taking FFX's votes 10-1 is challenging but possible, I think. Holding OOT to only getting 2/3 of LTTP's votes is going to be very tough.

Maybe the lack of caring was simply because people were sick of contests overall and it just coincidentally happened in the same year of the format change. There's no guarantee that going back to 1v1 will stop the apathy

Exactly, it's better to have a few close matches a year that are really intense and important rather than a lot of them that are unimportant and don't really tell us who is stronger. I mean, even Ulti-sized blowouts can be pretty exciting in 1v1 if we can learn a lot of info from them, while here they are just lame.

The legend of Zelda is a great game. Period. Best game of all time? Definitely NOT! There's tons of games that surpassed Zelda by a mile. Just let it go guys.....

I think there was still an excitement in 2007, partly because we finally got to see all of the characters we had been dying to see for a while.

However 2008 was just:

A) A bad bracket.
B) Too many fodder characters no one cared about in the interest of "diversity." Seriously, where were the FF gals? Sadly, 2005 probably still had the strongest bracket on average of any character contest.

2008 could have been fun with a better bracket. Frankly, I think we're just a little tired of 4 ways after two uneventful contests of them. There actually were a lack of exciting matches this year, by any standard, 1 vs. 1 or 4-way. Seriously, even while I don't like 4 ways there are 2 or 3 matches each from '07 and '08 that I would label all time greats. What do we have from this one? LoZ/SMB3?

We felt the same way going into '05 too, and we hit a little Renaissance there. Maybe it'll happen again.

I think that one thing that excited me about 1 v 1 was the possibility of making a winning bracket. They were a ton of debatable matches, but not TOO many. I could take all the debatable matches, do my research, share my ideas here, listen to others' ideas, and make a pick I felt really good about.

In these 4 ways, there's too many debatable matches to bother. I'm not gonna do 100 hours of research for this contest. And especially in later rounds, we don't even know with any certainty what the matches will even be.

I don't care that the 4 ways are closer; the fun to me was in research and seeing if my picks came to fruition. I've never been one to really ooh and ahh and refresh all day at a close match.

I say overall pic advantage goes to FFVII. The montage picture obviously favors it - there's obviously more combined strength there. The villains pic does as well, and even the hero + villains picture makes Link look... short.

People didn't like the Guitar Hero theme pic? For pic 4, I think you should have made the game names stand out a bit more. The blue in the top middle looks a bit wierd, but I get the feeling you couldn't really do anything about it.

Zen Analyzes the Match Pic

Not as explosive of a finish as IRA vs Taliban, but I'm sure we'll make due.

Hmmm, Bacon specifically asked for "creative" pics and we got some really bland ones, an artsy one and a new band pic. I was hoping for like ten really out there pics but I guess Bacon is just playing with us again.

It's like the villain's contest all over again! This is pretty clean for the most part, but Ganondorf looks a tad blurry, and the OoT logo is really pixel-y. Sephiroth gets the clear advantage as we all know. This pic is too basic for me to complain too much. But why did a villain pic get top billing? Hmmmm...

None of the character renders are from the right game, but whatever. The whole point was to be creative and OoT/FFVII have a limited amount of art. That being said, this one is pretty good. I'm not one for Link's shield being right next to the logo's shield but there's not much that can be done about that. Background is a tad bland but whatever. I think this pic should have been 1. Not that it matters, but it would make more sense that way.

I know a lot of people that work really hard on their pics. KP in particular did a damn good job this round (http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1776/bigpimpin.png) and we got MSPaint central. The idea is good but the execution is so... ugh. The reason Ceej taunted us with MSPaint when he first opened these submissions is because of stuff like this.

Yeah, I got nothing wrong with the theme, but it's blurry, the logos are squished, there's no background (we didn't really need one but no borders + no background looks weird) and Ruto's head is cut off. Uhhh...?

(PS I like how Tifa doesn't get a facepic so her boobs are in the shot)

I promised not to do any more artsy ones, but Bacon said to be creative, so I made this. The basic theme is the "best game ever" text coming up over the horizon, with the fading memories of FFVII and OoT in the front. I kept the game names mostly hidden because I don't think anybody needs to be told Link and Cloud represent.

This isn't a "good" pic, it was more my last artsy one, and a way to use the "no red" style people seemed to hate to much, because I think it looks so damn cool and I probably won't have a chance to use it again until the next bonus match.

9/10 for artsy, 5/10 for being a legitimate pic

It seemed the stats topic hated the last band pic. I was going to do a swimming pool homage instead but thought this would be easier. And yes, I just no realized the Les Paul is upside-down. I feel like an idiot.

So, uh, gimmicky and stuff, but Navi on vocals and Cait Sith on drums is just awesome. I was going to have a guitar battle only, but KP gave me the Navi/Cait Sith idea and I loved it too much to pass it up. Regardless of the fact that this is KH/SCII art, I think it came out awesome. 9/10 people seem to love it and that's really good for a gimmick pic.

11/10 for gimmicky pic, 6/10 for legitimate
Advantage: Navi is less hated than Cait Sith I think, but I don't mix with the FFVII fans enough to know
