You also have to remember that, while FF7's competition was stronger, it was 3 Nintendo games vs FF7, and 2 of them were Mario titles. If it was FFX advancing, I'd say OoT had an outside chance. Now, I highly doubt it.

Top 8 probably matters a lot more than top 10, strengthwise. Being top 8 puts you a fair distance from the pack, while there's a whole mob of games clustered together from #9 to #20, and maybe after that too.

Damn, OoT and FFVII are absolute monsters. Even back in '04, LttP, SMB3, CT, and Melee probably all would have broken 40% on OoT indirectly, and FFVI probably would have as well assuming the poll position was lowered. Now there's nothing.

I would like to say that it *is* possible for another game to approach their tier in the future, but it's going to take awhile. Don't be fooled by comparing this year to '04. These games *will* drop over time, it's just that the average GameFAQer is now most likely to have grown up with a PS or N64 as their first system, so that has cancelled out a lot of the aging. They will drop, in 6 or 7 years time probably, but they're too far ahead right now for anything else to catch up from the next gen. And this current gen is so weird from a GameFAQS standard (Wii is the most owned system, but X360 is the "gamer's" system, but it doesn't make games that are typical GameFAQS games) that it is unlikely anything will be able to come close in the future.

RBY had a third Nintendo game in the poll instead of an MGS game. I'm not entirely sure about whether SMW/SMB3 deserve to be in this tier though- we haven't had any good looks at them against games made after 1991. The first 4 rounds suggests that the LFF between them is pretty minimal, in which case getting 60/40'd by LTTP looks pretty embarassing. They get the benefit of the doubt for now, I guess (and I also think it's probable that adding FFVII to the poll increases the LFF between them.....they'll get much fewer "universal" votes with FFVII in there, have split harder the actual Mario fanbase).

Um, Brawl is doing a good deal worse than either of RBY's performances. Extrapolating through OOT gives Brawl like 46% on RBY using RBY's weaker performance, and not even 43% using the stronger.

But I think that match was pretty clearly an overperformance and not really indicative of the true strength gap between Brawl and MGS4. We saw TP in a similar scenario improve a ton on RE4 from the previous round. FFX also is going to put a fair margin between itself and MGS4 by the end. Also, FFX isn't that strong(!!!).

Comparing how LTTP and FFX do against FFVII and OOT, and then how FFVII and OOT do against each other, more or less would give me a satisfactory resolution. Of course there's problems with 4-ways and non-linearity and all that stuff, but considering the format, it could be a lot worse.

And I don't really think the older games are way stronger than the new ones. The average PS2/GC/Xbox era game is probably stronger than the average SNES game, but the variance is also higher among the old games, so the top games there can beat the top modern games. Really though, the 32/64 generation just stands out as the #1 generation BY FAR.

FFX should start ripping it apart in a couple hours.

The 5:00-6:00 AM hour was the strongest hour for FFX last round. I'm thinking FFX should start picking up next hour and continue increasing until 6:00 AM.

MGS4 clearly leaves a great impression - PS3 owners are the only people who've played it, so to be this strong....

I submit that MGS4 would be a good 3-5% weaker if not for the best surprise of all time ever after the credits rolled.
