A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

What does winning $600 from Brawl have anything to do with you being an anti-fanboy? There's a difference between being an anti-fanboy and someone who doesn't like the game.

I haven't exploded in any topic about any FF/MGS game for months, and I won't because I don't care about them.

You actively hate Brawl like it's your internet duty. Even if you don't post about hating it, you hint at it and make note of it all the time. Same with the Mario > Samus thing ("I promise not to mention Samus > Mario in these topics" is still ****ing mentioning it!).

Heh, I still think it matters in the long run to helping us decide which is stronger. Because seriously, SMB3 has no excuse to lose this one, with the possibly the biggest SNES in the poll likely to hurt SMW more then 3.

Also, to quickly comment on Ulti's SSBB-hate: I read your review again, and I think you hit all the things I didn't like about switching from SSBM to SSBB. I also can't say much about the competitive scene of SSBB, but I'll believe what I've heard about some broken moves. That said, I don't see how these flaws -- even collectively -- made you hate the game when you love SSBM. It feels like you're going out of your way to hate it as much as you are, and I don't buy that you'd play a game enough to go to SSBB-tourneys and win $600 from them yet only give the game a 2/10.

Your opinions, not mine...but it's like you're handing out pitchforks and torches for a game you're put a lot of time into from my perspective. Change isn't so bad and the flaws aren't so unforgivable. If it's really that bad, you don't have to go to tournaments for it. Simple enough.

Goldeneye is in the running as well if FF7 turns out to be stronger than OoT.

From LeonhartFour's stats for each quarter down to the first non-Square/non-Nintendo game:

First Quarter Stats
Super Mario World – 51.64%
Super Mario Bros. 3 – 50.00%
Super Mario Bros. – 49.53%
Super Mario World (Round 3) – 49.52%
Super Mario Bros. 3 (Round 4) – 48.36%
The Legend of Zelda – 48.33%
Final Fantasy I – 44.11%
Final Fantasy IV – 38.57%
Sonic the Hedgehog – 31.69%

Second Quarter Stats
Final Fantasy VII – 50.00%
A Link to the Past – 36.61%
Super Mario 64 – 36.42%
Chrono Trigger – 35.36%
Final Fantasy VI – 33.34%
GoldenEye 007 – 33.03%

Third Quarter Stats
Ocarina of Time – 50.00%
Super Smash Bros. Melee – 37.28%
Final Fantasy X – 36.93%
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow – 36.90%
Metal Gear Solid – 35.11%

Fourth Quarter Stats
Super Smash Bros. Brawl – 50.00%
Metal Gear Solid 4 – 42.03%

For what it's worth, The List had MGS and Goldeneye as the strongest non-Square, non-Nintendo games with Goldeneye just above MGS. The List also had Halo just below MGS. >_>

I'm glad someone bothered reading my side and acknowledging I'm not some ranting lunatic before passing their judgment. That's all I've ever asked. My views on the game are clear in the review, but to address the "why do I play it?" point:

For one, I don't go out of my way to find tournaments. The won I won $500 at was at my local community college. The other tournament I won was some B-league thing, none of the great players were there, and it too was held at my local college. I join local game tournaments all the time, Brawl was just me lucking out and joining a tournament for a game I'm good at. I could rattle off losing at Halo and Madden a lot if you want.

I also have really fun friends, online and off. Even the worst game ever made is fun to play with people in real life. KP and I play Brawl now and then, and we both tend to have fun until I pick Wolf and camp him until he raqequits. In the end, we both go "Hey this game sucks, but you're fun to play with". Ditto for the guys in GoG's topic. You can make a bad game fun with friends, but that's a testament to how cool your friends are, not how good or bad the game is. Hell Turok 2 is a piece of ****, but I loved playing it with friends. Doesn't make Brawl any less a bad game.

As for the money, let's say someone bets you $1000 you can set a speed record at Superman 64. You practice for awhile, master everything, get your record, get your money and go home. Is Superman 64 a good game now? No.

I don't get why MGS4 beating Brawl would be a big deal. Both advance anyway, and Brawl has like no shot to place next match. It's gotta be among the most meaningless results this late in a contest we've ever had.

Whether Brawl completed the comeback or not only mattered for brackets, for contest relevance it meant nothing.

Time to rank the top 20 again:

1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Ocarina of Time

Big Gap

3. A Link to the Past
4. Super Mario 64
5. Chrono Trigger
6. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
7. Super Mario World
8. Super Mario Bros. 3

Small Gap

9. Metal Gear Solid
10. Super Smash Bros. Melee
11. Goldeneye 007
12. Final Fantasy X
13. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
14. Super Mario Bros.
15. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
16. Final Fantasy VI
17. Super Mario RPG
18. Twilight Princess
19. The Legend of Zelda
20. Metal Gear Solid 4

The gap between #2 and #3 is about 62-38 indirectly, the distance from top to bottom of tier 2 is about 55-45, the distance from #8 to #9 is about 53-47, and the distance from #9 to #20 is about 55-45. That puts the distance between #2 and #3 as about the same as between #3 and #20.

I will only do votal stats relative to last round from now on. That being said, may I see the full stats for the last two quarters of the bracket?

Zelda: Twilight Princess kept about 70.45% of its votes from last round. It did much better at standing up then its Wii brethen; that's for sure. Oddly enough, I'm starting to think that Legend of Zelda is going to be the only franchise that GameFAQs cares hugely about anymore, given that Mario and Final Fantasy have been going down.

Resident Evil 4 kept about 90.32%. It did fabulous in this department, but it was simply outclassed here. It should've gone on to next round, but kudos to making the quarterfinals whilst being from a franchise and genre that GameFAQs doesn't care about much.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl kept about 75.73% of its votes from last round. Not much to say, really, except that tomorrow will test out whether Smash (and, by extension, all of 21st century Nintendo) is casual bait.

Metal Gear Solid 4 kept about 104.8% of its votes from last round. Seems like removing Call of Duty 4 and Fallout 3 really helped it.

1. Final Fantasy VII (Round 3)
2. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Round 4)
3. Final Fantasy VII (Round 4)
4. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Round 3)
5. Zelda: A Link to the Past (Round 3)
6. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Round 3)
7. Super Mario Bros. (Round 3)
8. Super Smash Bros. Melee (Round 3)
9. Zelda: Twilight Princess (Round 3)
10. The Legend of Zelda (Round 3)
11. Final Fantasy VI (Round 3)
12. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Round 3)
13. Super Mario World (Round 3)
14. Super Mario World (Round 4)
15. Final Fantasy X (Round 3)
16. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Round 4)
17. The Legend of Zelda (Round 4)
18. Metal Gear Solid 4 (Round 3)
19. Final Fantasy X (Round 4)
