I figured RE4 would go out next round anyway. Didn't think it was strong enough to capitalize on the TP/Brawl split (while MGS4 would be strong enough). Need to see how MGS4 does tomorrow, but augh if that turns out to be right and MGS3 comes along to ruin things.

Can someone who has played MGS4 please explain to me the level of confidence as to why it should be stronger than MGS3? Will this confidence be reconsidered if Brawl dominates the upcoming match? I'm assuming this is based largely on their first and second round performances, because GotY voting really doesn't strike me as an effective indicator.

Speaking as someone who has played both, I think that others who have actually played through both would vote 4 over 3. 4 was bigger and had a greater overall impact on the player.

The problem lies in the franchise votes MGS4 relies on to do well. More people played 3 than 4 here, so you put 3 in against 4, and MGS4 loses out on franchise votes and is stuck with just its fans. Meanwhile MGS3 also suffers because it's losing out on voters from the people who have played both and prefer 4. The MGS fanbase isn't huge to begin with, so a split just wrecks both games.

I don't believe Brawl dominates tomorrow. If it does, well then 3 probably is stronger than 4. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a TP/MGS3 and Brawl/MGS4 correlation to be made.

This is the ultimate vindication that nobody cares about Resident Evil on this site, and all the sucky spin-offs took the attention away from RE. I've already made this argument over and over, so yeah.

Pokemon making the finals will be funny though, especially considering how fun Pokemon is. I'd bank more on Final Fantasy X doing so though.

And I love how, in my bracket, a game that I picked to lose in the first round beat a game that I picked to make the finals. OOPS

This is going to be the most tortuously slow comeback ever. Given that RE4 is (ever so slowly) coming back in the day, I still like MGS3 here. Why? Check out MGS's round 2 (weekend) match:

Most (but not all of us) hardcore MGS fans think 4 is a contender for the best game in the series, if not the best outright. 3, while amazing, isn't quite at the same level. It's got a weak story and the gameplay is.... off.

Though, to be honest, it wasn't all that hard to envision MGS3 beating RE4, though maybe that was because of IGN's Readers' Choice Top 100 Games List where MGS3 was 5th and RE4 was 9th, and Twilight Princess was 37th. Actually, here's how the whole division would go according to the list.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas > God of War (yep, San Andreas was 18th and God of War was 26th)
Metal Gear Solid 3 > Halo 2
Resident Evil 4 > Shadow of the Colossus
Half-Life 2 > Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wind Waker was ahead of Half-Life 2, though)

Metal Gear Solid 3 > Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Resident Evil 4 > Half-Life 2 (HL2 at 33rd on the list)

Metal Gear Solid 3 > Resident Evil 4

And the last division, going by the list:

I haven't met many that think MGS4 is the best. I know you may be wearing a bit of the rose tinted glasses having just played the game but are you just making things up, Ulti? What I tend to hear about it is "why are there so many cutscenes" and "lol Act 3"

MGS3 tends to have complaints about the camo system but most fans tend to be like "you don't need ideal camo so the system is fine." I personally don't agree but that's what I tend to notice.

If RE4 can beat MGS3 I'd say it can beat MGS4 at well.

I wonder why the heck RE4's dropped from 47% on TP to 42%

You hear that stuff from casual idiots who don't know you can skip scenes. From true MGS fans, the only real gripes are some gameplay problems (admittedly more than I'd like, but hey).

I know "lol My Games", but 9.5 to 9.1 is a decent jump given people are stupid and use LL's plus-minus system.

Eh, it all depends on what round you're basing it on. When RE4 goes from 47% to what will likely be sub 42% on Twilight Princess, I have to wonder about things. MGS3 beat it by a lot more last round, too.

That's a tough sell. Smash only gained 1.3% on its overnight low and actually declined for the last seven hours, finishing 1% ahead overall. Kingdom Hearts kept increasing from morning to poll end. It managed a 1.5% total increase and had still increased about a percent when Smash reached its 1.3% high. Considering that KH had a much lower percentage to begin with, I'd say it was the clear winner.

It's got a weak story

what (Don't bring up the Cobras to back this up. That's just personal preference, nothing to do with the story; The End, The Sorrow, The Fury, and The Boss make up for the insignificance of The Pain and the Fear anyway)

I still think Sonic or Master Chief (the characters, not the games) are the day vote kings. Not that we could compare unless you put Sora in a match with them.

Sonic had a match with Sora in 2007. I don't remember how it went. Sonic also went 50/50 with Mega Man during the day in 2005, which is downright pathetic. Sonic's more morning vote than ASV. The Crono comeback was more due to Crono's awful ASV that year than Sonic.

And I think KH vs. SSB is a draw. We need an actual weekday match. KH's day vote is much more diluted on the weekend, for whatever the reason. Sora's day vote seems stronger than KH's in general (and Axel is a day vote beast, too, for whatever the reason).

And I hope red sox wasn't serious when he was proclaiming RE4 to win this match by over 1000 votes.

MGS3 is *not* better, jesus christ. Nothing whatsoever happens in that game until you reach Groznj Grad, 70% of the way in. There's no story, or tension, or any sense of urgency at all like in the other three games.

Okay, then why doesn't he? I love MGS3 a lot, but defending its story and constant menu stuff is just stupid. Opinion on the other gameplay is subjective, so I'll leave it alone. If you like jungle hopping, good you. But the menu stuff sucks. I leave Snake's injuries to heal by themselves most of the time, because I hated all the menu crap. MGS4 toning this down is probably the biggest reason I think it's a better game. You rarely have to switch weapons or items or camos, especially if you're like me and don't kill anyone.

Oh, and for the record, MGS3's first round match was on a weekend. Its worst time was the normal DSV time, but it picked up around the time the ASV started, just like MGS did against RBY/GS/MM.

Oh I hate the menus plenty. I just think MGS4's absurd amount of cutscenes, poor writing at times (wayyyy too much exposition on some topics), fairly weak set of bosses, extremely weak Codec crew etc etc are enough to make MGS3 the better game.
